I know what you mean with the crowd. It was crazy. This year I learned my lesson and actually pre-booked my tickets and got there at just before 12. They did indeed. Granted a lot of stalls had run out of food by then/soon after, but those that still had stuff were still going at about 3 when I left. The crowds are always crazy. In the past I've usually made it a point to arrive at 11.30am, get photos and suss out the menus and then make a mad dash at midday. You did well all things considered!
