The slightly eccentric eating, cooking and travel adventures of a Sydney girl who loves cakes, cooking, Nigella Lawson and eating. She eats, breathes and dreams food and indeed will never get cable TV as she'd quit working and watch the Food Channel all day long.

Vee Vee's chicken rolls are fantastic. I've never had Hong Ha; why would I queue and pay more when Vee Vee's are excellent?

HH is overrated I think. And the quality is getting worse in my opinion. Last wk I was in a crush and the queue at HH was too long so I tried the roll at the shop nearby, Jenny something and it was quite good actually.

I am yet to get along to Hong Ha (or VVs) but have heard it spoken of in respectful knowing tones.
For folks in/near the southend of the city or surry hills try V8 Cafe - a hole in the wall on Elizabeth Street near Reservoir St - that does extraordinarily delicious vietnamese pork rolls (plus a bunch of variants) for $5. Crusty without being dry and warm contents complimented by tasty pate and salad.MMmmmm.
Enjoy

I don't like the pork rolls at either, but the chicken and salad rolls at VV's are sublime! The combo of soy, Mayo and everything else is orgasmic. I love that the lines are always at HongHa, VV's feels like a well kept secret :) loved reading this entry though, good work!

I have not try Hong Ha / VV pork roll. However, the best pork roll for me so far is from Bay Ngo in Bankstown. The bread is crips enough and not dry especially it's not too crumby - due to lots of baking powder added to the dough and this give the bread hollow and when you eat there's more crumb.

Interesting article. I always go to VV, they are generous with the filling + low low prices :D also it is usually nice and quiet so I can sit inside and eat my roll in peace!

Hi Maria-I had no idea chilis were expensive. I suppose since I get most of them from my mum's tree!

I find that a lot of places use whatever they can get. Red chillis can get really expensive sometimes and out of season (.. i've been listening to my mother too much.. ahh!!)
