The slightly eccentric eating, cooking and travel adventures of a Sydney girl who loves cakes, cooking, Nigella Lawson and eating. She eats, breathes and dreams food and indeed will never get cable TV as she'd quit working and watch the Food Channel all day long.

Hi Kyla-Its Chinese New Year soon so a great excuse to have some Chinese :)

Hi Maria-Thanks and welcome! For Crystal Garden that was for 4 people although it would have been enough for 5-6 people. If its two people you could just order the lobster but I think you'd still end up with a lot leftover (not a bad thing really ;) ).

Oh that's too bad about missing out on VeeVee, its a bit of a hike for us too so I don't often get to partake. Sounds like you had a good time in Sydney though and they turned on the good weather for you! :)

Hi Lori-I suspect it is rather rampant but something that is really hard to prove. My sister and I went to order a lobster at one establishment in Kensington to be told it was one weight and then when we asked him to show us, it was much lighter than he claimed it to be. Its even harder when the food comes out too but the restaurant is very silly when they omit the telltale claws which can tell you immediately that they've taken pieces out. And how many people just don't say anything or notice and get charged full freight? So annoying, so we always go here, at least we know we get all of the lobster.

Yes we were a bit upset at the lack of house soup and dessert considering the bill :(

I hadn't heard about the unscrupulous practice of short-changing customers on live seafood until recently. I heard about someone who went to a large, quite new Chinese restaurant in Hurstville, ordered 2 crabs, and when it came out, there were only 2 claws. When she complained, the waiter said that's just what you get, and that she'd only be charged 3/4 of the price. Totally unacceptable!
And not giving the house soup --- tsk tsk tsk. The lobster looks fantastic though.

Hi! I've been lurking at your site the last week or so! I love the food photographs and the commentary to go with it!

I'd be curious to know how many people you ordered the food for? In other words is that amount of lobster too much for two people? It would be out of my price range.. but it seems heavenly! I've never eaten lobster that way before. So many foodie experiences out there to be had!

I was disappointed that during my stay in Sydney over the Australia Day weekend I didn't get to try "Vee Vee's" for their pork rolls. I would have loovvved to. It was too "way out" for my sister and brother in law to consider it. I had to convince them to ring Guzman Y Gomez to see if they were open .. as they were convinced they'd be closed.

At least I got to try some different Mexican. Apparantly it's not Tex Mex.. but oh I so craved some dollops of sour cream. I had some 'Flan' later instead.

Love your site!

Cheers,
Maria.

Hi Popeye-That's great, I don't know anyone else that goes there. I think its a bit of a hidden secret and most people would probably order regular stuff which isn't as exciting as the seafood.

I've been to Crystal Garden before, was very enjoyable, a very out of the way place, though it was great when I went there.
