The slightly eccentric eating and cooking adventures of a Sydney girl who loves cakes, cooking, Nigella Lawson and eating. She eats, breathes and dreams food and indeed will never get cable TV as she'd quit working and watch the Food Channel all day long.

Hi Maria-they weren't very hot in themselves but the sheer amount of chili flakes made it oh so hot!

Hehe I really enjoy your comments as you give me the full story with details like how it sounded impressive but given his preoccupation with his best friend and his mourning his late wife makes it seem less so. But at least you got to try some good dumplings out of it!

Yes, my husband entertains fantasies of being a professional food eater at times!

Now that to me looked like a lot of chilli flakes on those spiced noodles! Were everyone's lips burning off?

I've not eaten many good dumplings.. but I do enjoy them very much. A "date" I had once.. took me to a market before cooking for me..and he bought some "famous" fresh dumplings..and we had those as starters.. and they were delicious. Ever since I've been meaning to go back and get those dumplings..but never have. That same date by the way was in love with his best friend Margaret and still very much mourning his late wife.. It was so evident to me during that market trip and date.. just thought I'd mention that because to read that someone shops and cooks for you.. it sounds impressive.. and I didn't want to give him that much credit.. lol!! Didn't end well..but I got to eat those yummy dumplings.. and some cremated fish he burnt on his BBQ too...

Lol at your husband eating all of those dumplings in addition to the other things too!

You've sparked my curiosity about the Shanghai Night place anyway!

Hi Lilia-I haven't actually been to Makoto-yet! I should go but my husband doesn't like sushi train as he needs about 20-25 plates to feel full. But if the Udon is good that's a good excuse to go as he will fill up with udon. Can you order it as part of the sushi train?

Have you try Udon noodle in Makoto? I tried it and it is really delicious. The soup was clear and not too salty. Seem it was cooked more than 4 hours in a small gas fire, so that it's clear and rich of flavour. The beef is really something that was cooked perfectly rich.

Hi Jobe-it may be that we ordered the wrong things (I saw an interesting plate with pancakes and pork) but when I compare the dumplings against Shanghai Night, Shanghai night won.
