The slightly eccentric eating, cooking and travel adventures of a Sydney girl who loves cakes, cooking, Nigella Lawson and eating. She eats, breathes and dreams food and indeed will never get cable TV as she'd quit working and watch the Food Channel all day long.

Hi Eve-Wonderfully detailed review! I love it when my readers report back as to how they found a place! What a shame about hubby's breakfast :( My husband refuses to go back to places if something similar occurs. Good to hear that you enjoyed yours though :) The magazine selection is good isn't it! Makes such a difference :D Thanks again for sharing! :D x

I decided to make this Saturday morning a Deus brekkis morning with my hubby and my 16 yr old brother in tow. I have read many reviews of this cafe ( including yours of course Lorraine! ;) and was tempted to go and find out for myself whether it lives up to the raves ( especially the one in SMH)
Arriving at noon on a Saturday, there was a good buzz in the cafe with the tables mostly dotted with people and I must admit, I loved the atmosphere - considering the buzz of Parramatta Rd right outside, inside the lowly lit warehouse space, was welcoming. I know what you mean now as the menu was a bit overwhelming with choices, yet I decided to go with the pappadelle pasta with peas and pine nuts, while my brother went with the smoked trouth with kipler potatoe, poached egg and fennel salad, whilst the hubby decided quickly on the slowed cooked Boston beans with pork sausages. Wrong choice.
Our food didn't take too long to arrive and they looked pretty inviting and service was super courteous and friendly- yet my hubby was dissapointed to find his , out of the three dishes, the most uninviting. Pale sausages and pale 'tin looking baked beans'. Worst still was when my brother and I enjoyed ours, he was grumbling at his bad choice and was annoyed why he had paid $17 ( +10% surcharge on weekends) for what tasted like tinned baked beans and dry pork sausage. It kinda ruin the mood of his day from that point onwards. (Double opps!)( In fact, the local church outside was handing out free sausage sizzles across the road which would probably be more inviting...) *woops!* Lunch order fail! :)
Needless to say, both my brother and I did enjoy our lunch, but our verdict as we walked back to our cars was, as tasty as our lunches was - it probably was not worth the price tag as I have had more consistent quality of food than what we just sampled. Perhaps we will be back to taste the more 'simple' offerings rather than the 'Deus' selection brekkies... perhaps the Eggs Benedict will be more forgiving ( as I did manage to catch a glance of someone else's order that whiffed pass my nose) Perhaps next time... not sure if I can convince the hubby to come along though ;)
Overall - interesting cafe, nice atmosphere and love that they offer the 'New Yorker' magazine to browse while waiting for the food. Here is my feed back none the less! Thought I would share. xx

Hi Maria-From the photo that I've seen on your blog, I'm finding it hard to imagine him as a biker. He looks very nice and clean cut!

That's a lovely story of how you met. It's always good to start off as friends, and if they're willing to see you through a rough time, then they're in it for the long haul. I'm sorry to hear that your father has passed but it's good to hear that you had some support through that time :)

Hi Lorraine,

No..lol -I didn't know my husband when he was a biker.. just aswell as he wouldn't have appealed to me in the slightest especially in the skinny-leg jeans I've seen in photo's. He looked so much older and just too "rough and rugged" back then but now, he's far more handsome.

We met online at a site called "Singles Who Click" (we each had a profile on there as it happens). I had moved to Brisbane, but my father died suddenly 2 weeks after my girl and I arrived - and to cut a long story short, the two of us were driving back to Victoria and had stopped in Sydney (Parklea) at my sisters for a couple of weeks before heading further south. It was around my birthday and I received an email from Paul. It just didn't seem to be the right timing.. penpals at a sad time when I had so much going on and needing to be sorted out.

Anyhow, we kept in touch via email and 4 months after the first email I agreed to meet him.. and the following year we were married. Our second marriage for both of us. Have been married for 3 years. :-)

Hi Maria-Hehe no don't worry about that!

Oh he sounds like he was serious-you wouldhave to be if you had a custom made outfit and a beard down to his belly. Did you know him when he was like that?

It's indeed hard to find here for some reason. I do love a good creamy chowder though and it's fairly hard to screw up so I always order it if I see it. The lamb sausages looked great but they really needed something added to it.

Yes reading material can really help, especially if service is slow. More places should have things to read-although going out for dinner with friends might seem a little odd then

You must think I start every sentence with "My husband"...?

My husband :-P (clean shaven, church going, cardiac nurse) used to be somewhat of a biker (with a beard down to his belly.. leathers etc years ago)..and he owned a custom made "outfit".. being a motorbike with sidecar (I didn't know the term for that until I met him).

Anyway.. he seems more into racing cars on the telly these days.

I've always wanted to eat a good clam chowder and never have. Never, ever eaten clam chowder at all from memory! Which I'm shocked about actually. I've made all sorts of chowders but never clam for some strange reason. The bread rolls look good..but I can see what you mean by it being too much for the filling. The picture of the lamb meal looked much better than the actual tasting as it happens. Oh well.

I also like places that have lots of things to read! :-)
