The slightly eccentric eating, cooking and travel adventures of a Sydney girl who loves cakes, cooking, Nigella Lawson and eating. She eats, breathes and dreams food and indeed will never get cable TV as she'd quit working and watch the Food Channel all day long.

They use to be good before they becoming famous. since they becoming famous and every1 knew about the place the service just went down the drain and the quality of the food just not as good as before.

The place is not kids friendly place. I was there few months ago with all my family. it happen they have plastic cups for us to drink.

My 11 months old son was playing with the empty PLASTIC CUP. he was hitting the cup onto the table. The old man which happen to be the owner of the restaurant was angry cause my son was playing with the cups and he said that the cups going to crack if his keep on hitting the cups on to the table!!
If you think about it how much power does the 11 months old baby have.how much would it cost for plastic cups??does it cost as much as to lose respect and customers?? Strange but true..

Place is not family friendly any more if you going to take your date to that place think twice. Owner is so crude. Very disappointed after so many years going to that place.

I feel like I just want to bite into that Ayam Goreng.. it just looks delish!

Hmm, celery leaves garnish.. some people don't do garnishes well.

I found the *chalk drawing* fascinating..someone was obviously mega-talented. I wouldn't have guessed it was a drawing had you not mentioned it.

And thank you for introducing me to the word "Pempek"! ;-)

Hi grace-That's very true!

Hi Lilia-It is really so good. We expected something like the fish cakes that are sold in stores but these are so different (and much nicer). I had no idea it was such a cool process, will ask next time, thanks! :D

Yes, I read your story before commented above.
I have to admit that the most soft and delicious Pempek in Sydney is Pempek Clovelly.

However, I like their savoury martabak because it is original as in Indonesia, if you ask the waitress that you want to have a look on how the cook throwing and throwing the martabak skin to get it big and bigger, you may find it's a magic. Just as what I though when I was a kid watching it and I still excited to see it get bigger and bigger.

Try the savoury martabak for next visit. It's oily like vietnamese pancake, but it is delicious.
If you like a filling in Pempek, Pempek Kapal Selam has salty egg yolk inside (which is boiled).

Indonesian usually use vermicelli to eat with Bakso (beef meatball) with some yellow noodle. Vermicelli is the main thing in Bakso Abang-Abang aside steamed rice.
Abang is a calling name to call hawker on the street selling Bakso or a brother.

Have you try eating out in Shalom? Try the fried tofu with peanut sauce on. It is on George Street, close to Broadway Shopping Centre.

Indonesian like their chicken to be cooked in grill, not the fired one in your picture. I have to agree that Ayam 99 has the best grilled chicken (with soy sauce) and the best kind of Soto with coconut milk (Soto Betawi).

Want something more dare and different? Try Sayur Asam (Vegetables with Tamarind soup).

Happy eating!
