I don’t know quite where The Old Dong Dong Noodles went but a visit to Dong Dong Noodles at Kingsford reveals a block packed with options and a brightly neon sign and an equally brightly lit new looking eatery packed with people. We’re greeted with a delicious looking window full of BBQ duck and pork-or a vegetarian’s worst nightmare. My Mother in law, a lifelong vegetarian, with parents that were vegetarian could not believe that they would string ducks up like that in an attempt to appeal the food to people. And I’ve yet to describe the idea of carving up a Peking Duck at the table to her, I think she would probably faint at seeing that.
It’s surprisingly larger than you’d think with a back room as well as the front room. we’re seated in the back room and given our large 210 item menus. My husband can’t help but comment that Gordon Ramsay would probably tell them to cut down their menu size. I’m dithering as I want to try some BBQ Duck but I want to try some tomato rice and some wonton soup. A closer look at the menu reveals many of the dishes, especially the noodle soup dishes are overlapped so that we actually found wonton noodle soup with BBQ Duck ($8) as well as a myriad of combinations. We also order a bowl of West Lake Shredded Beef souop ($4.50) and a plate of Roast Chicken Tomato rice ($6.80 plus 80c for tomato or “red” rice instead of plain rice).
Roast Chicken Tomato rice ($7.60 or $6.80 with plain rice)
And like we’ve been warned, the food comes out furiously fast. Before we know it, an enormous heaping plate of hot tomato rice with a huge sliced up quarter of chicken arrives. We can’t quite believe the size of it and dig in hungrily. The rice is delicious, better than fried rice and light on the tomato but full on flavour with fried egg threaded throughout. The chicken, with accompanying garlic vinegar sauce is beautifully crispy and soft and in parts falls off the bone. It very good and I would order this again in a second.
West Lake Shredded Beef Soup $4.50
The West Lake Shredded Beef Soup arrives steaming hot, a egg flower soup with thick beef slices. It has an unusual taste, perhaps from vinegar but is still a little bland. I am not a big fan of this and neither is my husband.
Wonton Noodle soup with BBQ Duck ($8)
Our last dish, the Wonton noodle soup with BBQ Duck ($8) arrives looking as picture perfect as I’ve ever seen a noodle soup with the 5 perfectly plump won tons lined up the the side and the fanned our roast duck facing them. It looks too perfect to dig into. But of course we do. The wontons are very flavoursome with fatty pork (some bits of pork and a bit too fatty) but they’re fat and plump and dotted with spring onion. The roast duck, a lot of it submerged which is a pity as it loses the lovely crispness, is good and plentiful and the bok choy and a generous serve of egg noodles are sitting underneath submerged in the mild broth.
My husband, a big eater who never leaves food on a plate can’t finish the food it’s so huge. And with this, I know we’ll be back, at his insistence.

that chicken rice looks delicious! must go and try
Hi Isla-The tomato rice and chicken was definitely my favourite of the night, and I don’t usually eat a lot of rice (it makes me feel full too quickly
)
i’m almost always a member of the clean plate club, never needing a take-home box. however, like ya’ll, i’d probably have trouble eating all that deliciousness in one sitting.
Hey NQN! First post here but I enjoy your blog and Vogue post. Were you here last night? I don’t live in the East but went to Kingsford Chinese restaurant for dinner last night (Sat) which is right next to Dong Dong! Small world!!! I actually wondered if you had ever been to either restaurant!
+1 for the tomato rice.
You’re right about the duck being submerged in soup. I love the crunchy skin and if I were brave enough, I would ask for it on a side place!
Hi grace-Hehe I always have my husband on hand to eat anything leftover!
he’s very useful that way!
Hi j_s2003-Cool, that’s great to hear!
Kingsford Chinese always seems busy although we didn’t quite make it there. Maybe another time and crowds are usually a good indication of the quality. How did you find the food?
Hi Maria-Yep nothing like crispy skinned duck. Mmmm I could go for some now! It’s a good idea to ask for it on a side plate, I don’t think they’d mind
How economical is this place?! What a bargain. I was in love with that chicken and tomato rice dish.. it looks so yum and how cheap!!
And lol at your husband mentioning that Gordon would makeover the size of their menu.. because my hubby and I now make comments like this too. “Gordon would do this.. or Gordon wouldn’t stand for that”..hehe.. We are even conscious of the size of menu’s now too!
The world according to Gordon!!
This establishment has a funny name.. I wonder what it really means?
Hi Maria-I know, I love it when you get yummy food at a bargain price
LOL yes Gordon has certainly pervaded our food related conversations. although my husband says that he could neve work for him (not that he would). He doesn’t think he could take the abuse!
I have no idea about what the name means, I should have asked them
I’ve been going to the NEW Dong Dong for years … so it’s not actually so new anymore, but it does have fantastic food (and they are always willing to modify things for my plain/non-chili tastes). Not to mention the copious amount of leftovers serve nicely as lunch the next day!
Hi kaydee-hehe we were actually wondering how new they were so thanks for letting us know that they’re aren’t quite that new!
Yes leftovers are always good
