The slightly eccentric eating, cooking and travel adventures of a Sydney girl who loves cakes, cooking, Nigella Lawson and eating. She eats, breathes and dreams food and indeed will never get cable TV as she'd quit working and watch the Food Channel all day long.

Hi Maria-Apparently the restrictiveness is good in that you can't really fall out of them. Although having said that, I saw plenty of people walking awkwardly in them! Perhaps cross country is better for you if you fear the downhill momentum (which I might too!).

I found ski boots very restrictive and I felt I had no control over my legs because of them. I also fear the downhill 'momentum'..picking up speed part.. which makes leaning forward the more scarier. But if downhill is supposed to be the easiest kind of snow skiing..what hope is there for me?.. Lol!!

Hi Y-It's quite amazing what you see in the snow. I mean a kangaroo? We thought what on earth? It is absolutely the perfect weather for it. Like Christmas in July when it's cold!

Hi KatyBelle-I wore thermals under my jeans and was still cold and I think it was -3 degrees. I don't know if I could handle any colder  But I think you're right, you do get used to it. My Canadian friend used to be fine in the snow but after living here really feels the cold when she goes back home.

Sounds good, I have heard that about skiing in Canada!

Haha! I've lived here forever, so I'm used to it. You just get used to wearing long-johns under your jeans.

Now, if you're getting into downhill skiing, then you definitely SHOULD come to Canada! BC and Alberta have great slopes! You'll just have to bundle up! ;)

Love those snowy pictures. I made a christmassy fruit cake a couple of days ago too - it just seemed like the perfect weather for it, and we've been slowly munching our way through it with copious cups of tea :)

Hi Kyle-I think the only good things about Winter are the foods and drinks (and maybe coats and boots). Is Sanguina from a particular country? I haven't heard about it :)
Hi KatyBelle -I think I would be totally freaked out by -40degree temperatures! The lowest I've been in is -16 in Chicago and I thought I was going to die, seriously

Hi Maria-I think you're closer to snow than we are. Lucky you! :)

I'm not much of a skier although it turns out that we first started on cross country which is the hardest type so perhaps we should have tried an easier type (downhill).

Interesting, do you find that you lean back a lot? I do when skiing which was not good as you're supposed to lean forward and others said that waterskiing would be good for me as you need to lean back. Sorry to hear that you found it traumatic :(

We do get along well and love going on holiday together which is really quite nice :)

My girl longs to see snow.. but I'm yet to take her.

This sounded like a great trip. What kind of skier are you?

I have water skiied and snow skiied in my life.. I'm hopeless in the snow..and found it to be a traumatic experience but I was able to conquer and enjoy the skill on water.

It's encouraging to read that there are extended families who holiday together and enjoy themselves. :)

Ooh, I realy feel like it's winter now! Snow, fruit-cake, mulled wine... lovely!

I have a non-alcoholic mulled wine that I brew up at parties, made on a base of dark grape juice. The recipe can be found on my blog this year, for the Winter Solstice on the 21st June - it's called "Sanguina".

I recently made it for my 17-year-old God-daughter's birthday party and it was a resounding success with the teenagers who pronounced it a very sophisticated drink! (high praise coming from some of the world's most 'honest' critics!)

If you don't like the cold, DON'T come to the Canadian Prairies in the winter! It can get down to -40 Celsius! PLUS wind-chill.

I'm going to bookmark the wine recipe, my friends and I love mulled wine, and this one looks like a nice change from the French recipe we usually use.
