NQN’s Eating Tour of Anzac Parade

Anzac Parade is one of those very, very long streets that stretches out for suburbs traversing the South and East of Sydney from La Perouse to Moore Park. A lot of places to eat are centered around the Kingsford area with the nearby University and these offer a range of extremely student budget friendly Asian food from Taiwanese to Indonesian, some worth a trip in themselves. My husband and I decided to do an eating tour of the best known places to eat here. I shall be adding places as I eat at them so keep checking back!

When I was a teenager my father lived in Maroubra for a few years, and I can tell you that none of these fabulous places existed there then! It was a fish-and-chips-and-meat-pie kind of area, more’s the pity!

Anyhow, this reminded me – I went to Din Tai Fung on the weekend. OH MY GOD the dumplings. My life is transformed, I swear to god. Plus we had the pickled vegetable and pork salad, and the silken tofu with pork floss, and the vegetarian tofu salad thingy, and it was all absolutely taste-tastic. Thanks for another good recommendation, Lorraine!

I have been craving those dumplings for the last 48 hours …

Hi SydneyGal-Yes I agree, there was nothing good there except boring takeaway shops!

Wonderful! So glad that you liked it :) Do they still have a lot of items marked as unavailable or are they all now in stock?

Hehe yes the perils of good dumplings. But you can get some to takeaway too! ;)

others to add to your list: ayam goreng and kingsford’s chinese!

You should also try “Gourmet Tofu” and “Sinma” – close to the roundabout…

There’s a new Indonesian Restaurant in Kensington called “Bali Stick” (next to Liquor Land, couple blocks before Pondok Buyung if you came from CBD).

The place is really nice & there’s live music sometimes on weekend, playing Indonesian songs.

We ordered ‘Bebek Betutu’ (Duck with balinese sauce – famous Bali meal), ‘Urap’ (special salad with coconat shredded), ‘sambal udang pete’ (prawn with hot chilli sauce & stinky bean).

All the meals are so yummy!

Hi Jessica-Thanks for that and for letting me know what’s good there. That’s always a big help! :)

lol… I lived in Kingsford for 10 years so I tried all those restaurants in your Anzac Parade Eating tours and more. Pretty much agreed with you with most of the review. You should visit the restaurants between Chong Hing and Pinangsia too. Not many people know but there is a Korean resto in Kingsford that you should visit too. Near South Junior League there’s a classy Indo resto called Bali that you definitely should visit. Also across the street from the dumpling resto that your husband like, there are few good resto as well. :)

Hi there! 3 recommendations to add to your Anzac Parade list:

    1. Golden Tower (Kingsford – near Pinangsia)
Recently open. Nice interiors. Food appears at amazing speed despite the many other customers waiting for theirs to appear too (never quite understand how they do it!). Serves a variety of Asian delights from bento-box-like meals to laksa and tom yum (they’ve got a glass case “plastic food” display showing off some of their popular choices. Oh, and you can also do the “noodle bar” by creating your own unique noodle (i.e. pick and mix). If you’re spoilt for choice, a safe call is their Famous Pork Chop – never seems to disappoint (and this comment coming from my other friends too)…

    2. Honey Wok (Kingsford – near Pinangsia)
They’ve opened for quite a while now. Quite easily one of the most budget Kingsford Chinese restaurant – large portions and cheap prices, especially when eating out with a large group. Don’t know the English names for the dishes so I can only describe – one is a tofu dish (think it’s called “Qing Huang Tofu” or “Huang Qing Tofu” in Mandarin – can’t remember which one), which is rectangular tofu blocks deep fried in crispy fritter-like batter and then generously topped with a soy-based gravy together with shredded pork and mushrooms. The other popular favourite with my group of friends is a fish dish where they fry shredded fish fillets and top it with a sweet and very mildly sour-spicy soy-based sauce. These 2 dishes are in the restaurant’s menu but are not featured in the set menus for group dining (the ones you find on the tables), so you may wanna ask the waitress.

    3. Abang Sam (Kensington – opposite Unilodge)
Operated by the same guy who sells his popular succulent satay in any Malaysian festival in Sydney (also caters for the National Day or Hari Raya open houses in Malaysian Hall, Alison Road). Nice interiors. May be a little overpriced (seeing how close Kingsford is with its cheap food) but can’t complain much especially when it’s authentic Malaysian food you’re getting…

Have fun trying them out! ^_^

Hehe, just thought I’ll make the entry about the tofu at Honey Wok a little clearer – only thought of this after posting… The tofu’s somewhat similar to agedashi tofu but more Chinese/gravy-styled… Enjoy! =)

Hi Jane-Thanks so much for the recommendations! They sound wonderful! :D I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know about them!

We call Chong Hing The Peter Allen restaurant because the first night we went in the manager was wearing a bright shirt, white pants and shoes! + a few of his exuberant hand gestures we couldn’t help ourselves.

Now we sing “I go to Rio” very time we drive down Anzac Parade and pass Chong Hing.

Some others for you to add to your Anzac Pde restaurant – not sure if you have tried these; ‘UBUD’ an Indonesian restaurant in Kingsford next to South Juniors (it’s got a really nice atmosphere, soft lighting & has wood furniture and buddha statues)- the Beef Rendang is really good! ; another place you should consider is ‘Sushi Tengoku’ (Japanese) in Kensington nearest cnr is Todman Ave (opp Kensington Peking) it’s really good value for fresh thick slices of Sashimi & Sushi is good too, and they serve the genmai-cha free of charge (self-service)! You have to book in advance and that doesn’t guarantee you will get seated at the booked time either as they tend to get packed very early & don’t rush you out the door. They sometimes take their phone off the hook during busy times. ENJOY!

    Hi Not Quite Nigella,

You should try Tempe Penyet when you visit Bali Stick next time. There is only one place to get it in Sydney.

When I was a young girl growing up in Maroubra Junction there used to be a Chinese restaurant on Maroubra Rd called Mr Chow’s. It had been an institution for several years already and the food was yum. Shame it’s not there anymore.

It is true what SydneyGal says, none of the places mentioned above existed back then.

  • 21. Not Quite Nigella | June 13th, 2011 at 11:14 am | #

Hi Nadia-How funny you mention that -I remember Mr Chow’s and my parents knew the people that owned it! I think we only dined there once though.
