BenBry Burgers, Manly

“The best burgers in Sydney you say?” I ask my friend. “Yes” she replies definitively. Granted she has yet to try the Plan B Wagyu burger but she insists that while Plan B’s is no doubt good, BenBry’s burgers are enormous, juicy and filling. From the dreamy look on her face, I’m almost convinced so I do what any curious food fanatic does, I went to BenBry to have a taste of them myself.

I’ve come armed, armed with hungry men. Which is a pretty good way of judging the size of a burger. Inside, there’s one large wooden table with bench seating which seats up to 8 as well as high bar stools to the left. Not a great deal of space to eat in but we are in luck and the couple inhabiting the large table leave soon after.

Waiting for the table to clear has given us plenty of time to contemplate the menu. There are several types of beef burgers, lamb burgers, chicken burgers, a Barramundi burger and 2 vegetarian burgers as well as kid’s sizes and sides. We make our choices and wait about 10 minute for our orders which all come at the same time as there are many takeaway orders for the waiting crowds behind us. The first thing we notice is the size of the burgers, at about 13cms in diameter they’re huge. Figaro suggests putting a McFeast or Big Mac against them to show the size comparison. They’re also flatter than other burgers so that they’re easier to eat.

Tropical Feast burger $8.50

I try my Tropical Feast burger Prime Australian Beef, streaky bacon, cheese, pineapple, lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, BB aioli & sauce tomato.

Inside the Tropical Feast

It’s juicy and delicious, I am loathe to swap halfway with my husband.

Inside the Mexican beef burger $10

Our Mexican Beef burger is the special of the day with chili, tomato salsa, sour cream, spiced beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and guacamole. My husband adores this as he says it’s just like eating Nachos except without the corn chips. It’s huge and juicy with plenty of avocado and salsa.

Fries with aioli $3.50

Our serve of freshly cooked piping hot golden fries is very generous, the fries seasoned and great with the aioli.

The Business $13.50

The Business burgers (in other words, the works) is something Figaro chose to sate his ferocious hunger. Comprised of a doppelganger serving of Prime Aussie Beef (300g) & streaky bacon, loads of edam cheese, 2 eggs, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, red onion, sauce tomate and a generous serve of BB aioli he is amazed at the size and can barely finish it. Granted he has ordered it with a half dozen portion of crumbed squid but he stops several times while eating it mustering up strength to finish it.

Crumbed Squid pieces half dozen with wasabi mayo $4

The Squid pieces are gorgeously soft and tender with a light seasoned salt and pepper coating. Figaro is chuffed at his score especially given the price.

No Bull $8.50

A and the Assman choose the No Bull burger, made with Organic Tofu with a spicy satay, coconut and coriander sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, alfalfa & BB aioli. The tofu is coated in a light batter and deep fried and the generous serve of salad on it pleases them and A particularly likes the satay sauce.

Soul-laffel $8

Tuulikki likes her Soul-laffel vegetarian burger with Falafel Patties topped with lemon yogurt and chipotle chilli sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, avocado & BB aioli. It’s quite possibly the ugliest, messiest looking burger I’ve ever seen although we’re not sure if it came that way or whether her curious fingers have been searching for the elusive felafel.

Inside the Soulaffel

Lifting the top, we see 4 halves of felafel, not the most filling when compared to the other burgers.

Barramanda $10.50

Two days later, we are craving burgers and we go back to try the Fish and the Chicken burgers. I start off with the Barramanda burger with fresh Barramundi, grilled or beer battered, with BB dill tartare, lettuce, tomato, red onion & BB aioli. You can have the Barramundi either battered and deep fried or grilled.

The aioli and tartare are strong flavours in this along with the tartare while the Barramundi is thin and in several pieces and needs salting as it doesn’t hold up to the tartare and aioli. The bread roll is fabulously soft and scattered liberally with sesame seeds.

Taj Delight $9

The Taj Delight has Grilled Chicken Thighs marinated in a chilli, ginger and coriander yoghurt with lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, BB aioli & mango chutney. There is a bit too much mango chutney and could do with a bit more of the yoghurt but the chicken is tender and juicy.

Figaro, a keen beach volleyball player voices his newest dilemma, when waiting for his turn playing beach volleyball, he isn’t sure how he can resist the lure of running across the road and running in for a burger.

They look great Lorraine - especially the tropical feast (I’m quite partial to pineapple in my burgers, and the more avo, the better!)

Have you tried Burgerfuel in Newtown/Kings Cross? Trust me, they are amazing and gigantic. We’re big fans of the B@stard burger, and the Bacon Backfire, and you must try the kumera fries with aioli. Yum!

I’m planning to have a birthday there (large group) but I wonder how the seating is. Can anyone comment?

Also, any chance for BYO? :)

  • 14. Not Quite Nigella | October 3, 2008 at 10:17 pm | #

Hi Vivz-You might be able to see from the pics but there is a large table that would fit 6-8 plus some stools to the right but it doesn’t really look as if it’s really set up for birthdays. It’s a casual beachside burger place so I’m certain it’s not licensed but have no idea about BYO. Perhaps you could call them? :)
