SMH Good Food Month Kings Cross Hotel Sugar Hit 2008

Having a Sugar Hit straight after a 3 course dinner is not the most salubrious way to good health I will freely admit. However when you’re with a bunch of food bloggers, it seems almost natural thing to do. We’d first tried to get into Galileo at the Observatory, and then the Westin, The Radisson to no avail – apparently Sydney along with all of us are crazy for the Sugar Hits (I wish they’d be made permanent!). So we find ourselves at the Kings Cross hotel, opposite the Coca Cola sign in Kings Cross, with a stunning array of passersby in various degrees of intoxication and undress to gawk at. I’m sitting with Suze from ChocolateSuze, Christie from Fig & Cherry, Helen from Grabyourfork and Anna from Morsels and Musings.

The Sugar Hit is held on the Kings Cross Hotel’s 1st floor balcony. On the Sugar Hit menu tonight is the Warm Chocolate fondant & Frangelico Chocolate Sauce, White Chocolate Panna Cotta & Grand Marnier Rhubarb and Bitter Chocolate Sorbet & Champagne Raspberry. Our waiter tells us that the sorbet is a sauce instead (although truth be told, most of us don’t hear him and wonder where the sorbet has gone when we receive it).

Warm Chocolate fondant & Frangelico Chocolate Sauce, White Chocolate Panna Cotta & Grand Marnier Rhubarb and Bitter Chocolate Sorbet & Champagne Raspberry $20

The tasting platter certainly looks impressive. The chocolate fondant is gooey soft and rich with a thick river of chocolate sauce spurting volcano like from the molten centre. The glossy white chocolate pannacotta is very wobbly, almost too wobbly and the champagne raspberry appears to be frozen raspberries soused in champagne with a sweet honey flavoured triangular softish biscuit on top (made soft from the rhubarb).

At midnight we turn into pumpkins so we head off home. Past the notorious Four Seasons chicken takeaway shop that has us chuckling earlier in the taxi at its almost obscene window display heaped with every sort of fast and greasy food you could imagine that would certainly help some of the Kings Cross Punters steam on ahead in the early hours of the morning. We prefer to use the Sugar Hit as our sustenance.

Good food month in KINGS CROSS? I have to say that’s one of the last places I would’ve expected to be offering sugar hits.

That being said, it looks rather delicious.

Oh and there is nothing wrong with going for a sugar hit after a 3 course meal!

Hi Cappucino-I know, I didn’t expect much but this was one of the nicer Sugar Hits food-wise I have to say. Still not sure about the setting…

Hi FFichiban-Hehe yes it was nice and gooey inside! :)

Wow, that’s quite a dessert platter! The white chocolate panna cotta appeals most of all, I think. Looks luscious…

Hi Angela-it had a really nice filling to it, I could go for one now! :)

Hi Suze-LOL Not so subliminal advertising was it?

Hi Maria-Yeah he said something about it not working when they made it. It’s good as everyone understand pausing for photos :)

The place is called Four Seasons and I’m not surprised it hasn’t appeared on google. Their patrons are late night ones and usually a bit drunk :P

    Hi grace-LOL really? No pumpkin?

I did this Sugar Hit too! I must say I was also suprised to see a Sugar Hit in the Cross but I quite liked the setting in the end…there was a bit of a buzz about the place and the Coke sign is an icon you know!
I thought the White Chocolate Panncotta was to die for!!! I didnt quite get the whole raspberry bitter chocolate thing…for some reason it just didnt work for me – and I’m a dark chocolate fan so don’t know whats going on there..
NQN – I so totally agree!! The warm chocolate fondant was very volcano like…it reminded me alot of Max Brenners which I love so I wasnt complaining!

Hi Catherine-Yes I polished off most of that pannacotta and I ended up voting for this one as the best food wise-although I have to admit I preferred the atmosphere at the other ones. I think the table of drunk guys near us put me off

If only I could have that chocolate fondant now! *sigh*
