Countdown ’til Christmas-some recipe suggestions from ghosts of recipes past

I know, I know. Christmas is coming and as a foodie you’ve probably been asked to partake or at least bring a dish in the whole grand production that is Christmas. Or more perilous still, you’re the person who is hosting the Christmas shindig and you’ve got to come up with some fabulous courses in order to satisfy every picky eater that is part of your family along with having a quick cocktail get together with friends in the days preceding Christmas. And let’s not forget the vegetarians or kids in the mix…

Allow me to make some suggestions from the ghosts of recipes past:

Nibblies for a pre-Christmas get-together with friends:

Caramelised Camembert with macadamia nuts

The Union Square Cafe’s Nuts

Tetsuya’s Oysters with rice wine vinaigrette

Goat’s cheese, basil and walnut wontons

Smoked Trout Pate

Quail’s eggs with Za’atar

Christmas Pudding Vodka

Christmas Dinner en familie:

Zuni Roast Chicken with bread salad

Perfect Roast Chicken

Rosemary Roasted pork with Apple Maple sauce

Normandy Guinea Fowl with perfect Roast Potatoes

L’aligot

Prawns with Maryam Zaira sauce

Raspberry and Lemongrass trifle

Rhubarb Fool

Chocolate Chestnut Cakes

Pavlova

And then there’s the vegetarians…

Fruit cake, Swedish Mulled wine and Finnish pea soup

Cheese Souffle

Blue cheese gnocchi

Sesame peanut noodles

Cheese and leek tart

Pumpkin cheesecake

Sweet tofu and papaya dessert

To keep the kids quiet:

Pancake Soup

Tiddlywinks Toadstool pie

Healthy Chicken nuggets

Goblin pies (for your little goblins but make them Elf faces!)

Coca Cola Cupcakes

Marshmallow Crispy Squares

Magic Pudding with legs

Portuguese Custard Tarts

If you can’t avoid it and people insist on staying over…

Crumpets

French Toast

Fried Green tomatoes with milk gravy

Healthy granola

Norwegian Cinnamon buns

Norwegian Waffles or pancakes

Lastly I leave you with some photos of the nearby house decorated with Christmas lights. Around our area not a lot of houses do the whole Christmas lights thing but this house is quite the exception. It’s situated on the corner of Spofforth Street and Rangers Road, Cremorne (see map below) and is well worth a visit. They’re also collecting donations in the tins outside for the Cancer Council of Australia.

    hmmmm…
do you think it’s possible to live on Portuguese custard tarts and Norwegian waffles for the entire Christmas period?

    I’d like to try.

    Have a lovely Christmas, Lorraine!

All your pics are beautiful! I especially enjoyed seeing the quail’s egg with za’atar. It looks so pretty! Believe it or not, I haven’t had za’atar…but I intend to seek it out soon!

Great round up Lorraine! I think the potato and zucchini gratin should also be featured in the vegetarian section… it’s a perfect main or side dish that’s also indulgent for Xmas! :)

I hope you have a lovely time with your family xx

Hi Y-There’s always someone that has to stay over isn’t there

Hi Gera-Thankyou and thanks too for stopping by! Hope that your weekend was full of fabulous food! :D

Hi Barbara-Ah of course, they’re not really an American thing are they? I adore crumpets and these home made ones, when they’re freshly made are like mouthfuls of clouds. After 10 minutes they’re like ones that you buy but the first 10 minutes is heaven! :)

Hi Karen-That’s good, at least you’re not the one hosting! I bet you and your mum cook up a gorgeous one too! ;)

Hi Annie-Haha sure! That vodka went a little too quickly it was so good :( I planned to give more away this year but my husband appropriated it!

Hi the projectivist-Absolutely! Have a gorgeous one Trace and I hope that you get a gorgeous pair of shoes that are comfortable :)

Hi Cakebrain-Thankyou! That’s one of my favourites too as it was so delicious. Za’atar is great, definitely worth a try, especially with eggs :)

Hi Christie-Yes that is very true! Thanks for reminding me :) Have a gorgeous one with your friends and family and eats lots of lovely food! :D

Hi Johanna-Hehe thankyou so much! I admit I love cooking breakfast-as long as people don’t mind waiting while I sleep in

You’re very patient to make crumpets. I only recently discovered they were yeasted when I was looking for a gluten free version. I haven’t got around to trying them yet though.

This post must have taken you hours :) Your blue cheese gnocchi looks to die for and I want to try your goat cheese wonton wrappers! I’m getting hungry looking at all of these photos!

Hi Arwen-I admit the mood had to strike me. If I knew that I had to make these every morning I’d be driven insane and probably wouldn’t be able to sleep all night

Hi Marc-The macadamia is a great show stopper! I love seeing the look on everyone’s face when I bring that out :D Thanks so much! :)

Hi maris-Hehe thanks, but it’s more a recap of what I’ve done. Thankyou so much! Please let me know what you think of them :)

I love your site! Your photos capture the food so well… makes me hungry everytime I visit! I especially love the idea for Christmas pudding vodka! I made a cranberry infused vodka for gifts this year… love it.
