One of my favourite bugs is a dragonfly because they are very prevalent in Art Nouveau period jewellery pieces and I adore Art Nouveau jewellery or at least A/N inspired pieces.

YAY, I get to play. I like pretty much all bugs, but if I had to pick just one I would say the humble bumblebee.

Those bug-shaped cakes are so cute, my 5-year-old niece would die for them!

My favorite bug is the ladybug because she’s so fashionably dressed in black and red ;)

One of my favorite bugs has to be the butterfly. They are such beautiful creatures, and there’s so many different types! I tend to see monarchs and other warm-hued versions most often around here, but I especially love when I catch a glimpse of the blue and purple ones!

Honestly. Most ‘bugs’ are gross. BUT a butterfly or ladybug are nice. And pretty.

    Hi Lorraine,

    What an interesting question!!

While I am not a huge lover of spiders my children insist that we have to look at the tarantulas and other spiders at the zoo/museum very closely… gggrrrr!!! The very thought of them irks me but I am now starting to see the beauty of them (behind glass of course)…..

BUT my favourite bug of all time though is the ladybug.. I love how delicate and small they are. Very cut and colourful.

    Thanks for the competition.

Oooh, favourite bug? I love a ladybug (or is it ladybird?) and adore a flutterby (butterfly), but actually I really like sakkatas (spelling?). I love their noise, it’s Sydney summer to me.

And Zumbo auctioning those items to raise money for charity – sigh, I’m an even bigger fan now!

    Lady bugs are my favourite.

I don’t know why because butterflies are more beautiful.

But lady bugs land on your arm and crawl up and down and tickle and I love that!

    Hi!
I’d have to say my favourite insect would be the Dragonfly. To me it’s somewhat magical, it flies in only for a brief moment then they seem to just disappear. From something that appears to be made from almost nothing they are certainly one beautiful creature.
Rarely catching sight of a dragonfly they always bring delight.

Can I say Balmain Bug? Cos its delicious and edible! hehe

I cross stiched a ladybug on a sunflower and what a difference it made.

  • 23. Lilia | July 18, 2009 at 9:52 am | #

My favourite bug is ladybird as it’s the smallest and beautiful with coloured spots and background. Maybe polkadots originally come from this bug :p
Ladybird is the only bug which will not make me shriek or run around. Just keep me away from the cockroahs, beetles, butterflies ( I accidentally sit on a butterflies when I was small and got a big trauma on this bug) and other big bugs.

  • 24. sally | July 18, 2009 at 9:53 am | #

I will have to pick the Praying Mantis as people have told me that my eyes remind me of one – not sure whether that is a compliment or not The moulds are gorgeous

I have not seen one in decades, but my favorite insect is a lightening bug. I remember catching them in a jar (with holes in the lid) as a child in Iowa. My cousins and I would carry them around like lanterns, then release them before we had to go to bed. It was truly magical! Thank you for inspiring the memory, and for the giveaway.

  • 26. Dani | July 18, 2009 at 9:58 am | #

I have not seen one in decades, but I love lightening bugs/fireflies. I remember catching them in jars (with holes in the lid) as a child in Iowa, USA. My cousins and I would carry the jars around like lanterns. We would release them unharmed when it was time to go to bed. We felt like we were in fairyland. Thank you for inspiring the memory, and for the giveaway.

Have to agree with many of the posts. The Ladybug is our favourite. We love the fact that in so many cultures it is seen as lucky. In France, if a Ladybug landed on you, whatever ailment you had would fly away with the Ladybug. Wouldn’t that be fabulous!

  • 28. Sophie | July 18, 2009 at 10:09 am | #

My favourite big would probobly have to be the bee. Why? They give me honey!!! And I love honey. I also love the sound of bees buzzing about in flowers on nice sunny days, its such a summer a sound and they always look so cute, hovering about the flowers.

  • 29. Clare | July 18, 2009 at 10:11 am | #

I like the bee best. Because they’re kind of cute and fuzzy and they make honey, which is just magical. I am a little scared of the stings though – I don’t react so well to them.

  • 30. meg2_copd | July 18, 2009 at 10:13 am | #

    :-( I can’t get to the auction….

I go icky at the sight of most bugs (and I don’t count the butterfly as a but, but since they did!) – butterflies are the only ones I think are gorgeous, for the corny reason of how they are born – from the icky ugly creepy caterpillar into the amazingly colourful flutterby!

  • 32. Brenda | July 18, 2009 at 10:20 am | #

A butterfly because it transforms from a caterpillar to this beautiful creature

  • 38. Carina | July 18, 2009 at 11:18 am | #

I don’t know would it be classified as a bug – more likely a worm. lol. I’d say mine would be the beach / blood worm only because it works bloody fantastic when fishing.

my first beloved love for bugs is the hideous pill bug, or what we like to call the roly-poly! i used to play with them for hours. touching their tiny feet and forcing them to roll up into balls and tossing them around (on the ground delicately-of course).

I just wanted to say that I’m one of your biggest fans. I visit your site all the time to get tips on where to eat and what to make. Thanks for sharing your adventures. You inspire people. Some friends gave me my very own blog as a birthday present. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed reading yours.

    Cheers

  • 44. Aparna | July 18, 2009 at 12:36 pm | #

    Lorraine, I hate bugs!!!
But if they’re the kind that are on that mold, that’s ok. :)

For a favourite, I would pick the ladybird – colourful and cute.

  • 45. Sarah Gasu | July 18, 2009 at 1:04 pm | #

Goodness me, the world is full of so many beautiful insects, and of course a fair amount of icky ones too. I think the mould itself goes to say that the ladybird, butterfly and dragon fly are among our favourites, but just recently my daughter and I had the pleasure of having a Katydid come and visit my rose bush, and she stayed for ages. I had never actually seen one before, and haven’t since. But she was truly a beautiful emerald green with not a mark on her. She was happy to be picked up and would walk on our hands with her little feet feeling almost sticky in the way they grip. Each day we would go out and visit her, and for about a week I agreed to let my little girl keep her in her bedroom as she had made her such a beautiful house to live in.
Eventually we took her back to the rose bush where she stayed a few more days and then one day she was gone, but we often talk about her so the memory of her visit will stay forever.

  • 46. Kylie | July 18, 2009 at 1:26 pm | #

I love ladybirds, especially those special yellow ones that sometimes land ontop of your hand when your in the garden. I was going to say the clear coloured lizards . . . but he isnt a bug! Thats what you get for lack of sleep with a 6mth old!

The cakes look gorgeous! Am starting a cake class in August and feeling more and more inspired now!

    Hi!
My favourite insect is the leaf insect- we saw them on our trip through OZ, – what a wonder; first you don’t see them at all, then, when you realize it is an insect, you suddenly start to recognize the different body parts- legs, head, separate body-parts; all cleverly covered up as leaves. You just can’t stop watching them!

Those are fab! I’m definitely not a fan of bugs, but my boys go mad for them! Today’s favourite is the stag beetle, because they are big, and you can make them fight!

I love Dragonflies, also known as Odonatas. I love their pretty little wings and tails

  • 50. Lauren Beech | July 18, 2009 at 2:38 pm | #

My favourite bug would have to be the ladybird/bug. Why? Because of the way my kids eyes light up when they see them, doesn’t matter if we’re at the pool or at home in the backyard, whenever they find one they race over to me with it, they’re so excited to see such a small, delicate creature crawling on their hand.

Teaching them the Ladybird ladybird fly away home song ends the adventure as we let her go (near where they found her) to find her family again.

  • 51. Caroline Kelly | July 18, 2009 at 3:07 pm | #

Lady bugs- so many different species and colour depths. If I have aphids on my garden plants, some of the species will eat the aphids- no chemicals required.

  • 52. Hannah | July 18, 2009 at 3:16 pm | #

The ladybird, because I remember trying to catch them in my grandparents’ backyard when I was a little kid, so they’re associated with my wonderful grandparents!

  • 53. yaelian | July 18, 2009 at 3:28 pm | #

Lovely silicone moulds! I don’t really like insects, but I think ladybirds are cute and pretty…

Cochineal Beetle… for the amazing red dye that’s made from them.

  • 55. Matilda | July 18, 2009 at 5:06 pm | #

Ladybird is definitely the favourite, they’re beautiful, harmless and if they land on you, consider yourself lucky. My next favourite is the Praying Mantis as it can blend into it’s environment and it’s pose truly reflects it’s name.
The Adriano Zumbo cake auction is such a great idea, hope oodles of money was raised for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

  • 56. Rachel | July 18, 2009 at 5:15 pm | #

  • 61. Josh | July 18, 2009 at 5:39 pm | #

I like bees the best because I enjoyed The B Movie, an animated movie with Jerry Seinfeld’s voice, coincidentally, all about bees.

  • 62. Di | July 18, 2009 at 5:40 pm | #

Dragonflies are my favourite because they are just that little bit left of centre – still very beautiful though.

  • 63. Amanda G | July 18, 2009 at 5:44 pm | #

My favourite bug is the butterfly- I just had a butterfly themed party for my daughter last week! They are so feminine and delicate. They are very graceful and I have never heard anyone complain about them. They remind me of spring and the fact that anybody can change on the outside or the inside (they were once ugly caterpillars). They are so pretty and never bite anyone. They have beautiful wings, my daughter calls them ‘fairies’!

  • 64. Anna | July 18, 2009 at 5:48 pm | #

My favourite would have to be the ladybird bug. They bring so much style to the bug world – those cute little red coats with black buttons and a little black beret… adorable! :)

  • 65. Yvette Hooley | July 18, 2009 at 6:11 pm | #

Mine would have to be caterpillars, for the simple reason that the The Very Hungary is both my son’s favorite book. It gives so much pleasure when we get to sit and cuddle whilst reading the book

The bumble bee – her life is spent gathering pollen, to feed all the babies back at the hive.
Men are born without mouths – it’s not their role to eat, simply to fertilise the queen before they die. So,it’s the girls who rule this empire, which, incidentally all flowering plants rely upon. Evolving together with plants for hundreds of millions of years, the bees and the flowers would never notice if we disappeared; if they did, we’d be dead (of starvation) in months, as we rely so heavily on all flowering plants and the animals that eat them. The humble bumble! See the link to a pic my partner took last week.

my favourite bugs are cicadas (are they classed as bugs?!) You don’t see them that often anymore but as a kid i used to love collecting their shells and hearing their deafening sounds!

  • 69. Karen | July 18, 2009 at 8:17 pm | #

The ladybird wins my vote. It’s the first toy my little one had (it was part of her cot mobile) and she spent countless hours staring at it. That in turn became hours of me staring at her. The simple joys in life. Now that she’s almost 1, she loves eating food in interesting shapes and what delight it will bring if I had this mould!

I like slaters, or roll-up bugs as my children call them. They can be adopted as pets and roll up into balls when they are frightened. I also love the dragonfly on the cover of AS Byatt’s The Children’s Book; it is a beautiful cover and a great book!

I love these moulds, they make kids cakes a real doddle. No more spending four hours creating a fairy castle! It truly was a labour of love! Lakeland do a great selection in the UK, and I’m very tempted to stock up. I can feel a ladybird cake coming on!

Let’s see… I’m really not knowledgeable when it comes to bugs, I know I do not like roaches or anything that bites/stings… I’m going to go with grasshoppers. I like them because they’re full of energy!

  • 86. Kristen | July 19, 2009 at 11:02 am | #

The most amazing bugs I have seen have been in Namibia. It was April when we were walking to a restaurant in the evening, it was dark, and you couldn’t see anything beneath your feet. The bugs were black, the same color as the tar road. You could only hear them, with every step, they were under your feet, crunch..crunch..crunch.

They were everywhere, I do not know what kind of bug they where. In the daylight you could see a few of them, big and black, but after sunset they became a carpet on the hot African desert floor.

That image and feeling will be with me forever. Next time I will wear proper shoes after dark, the flimsy sandals were not enough.

    Hi Lorraine, Dragonfly’s…….
they are my all time perenial favorites. The beauty of those iridescent wings and their elegant long bodies. To watch them swoop and dive then hover so effortlessly is a joy, then of course it’s usually a warm, still summers day. Perfect.
Will be keeping my fingers crossed for this giveaway, just adorable moulds.

Have quite a few that i like but the butterfly is a firm favourite because of its wonderful colours. I love to see butterflies flying about or perch on the flowers in my garden.

I love stick insects and used to have one as a pet in my office.

  • 95. Fiona | July 19, 2009 at 2:19 pm | #

It would have to be the illustrious *busy bee*, not only does the *bee* produce honey to make those wonderful cakes, cupcakes, some of adriano’s creations, accompaniment to teas, they also pollinate flowers which in turn keeps the balance of our world’s eco-system alive… a world without *bee’s* would be disastrous indeed!

  • 96. Caroline Jewell | July 19, 2009 at 2:45 pm | #

Dragonfly definitely! With their huge eyes and striking transparent double wings they are a delight to find in the garden flitting about ! Butterflies are beautiful but dragonflies seem to have something regal?? about them.

  • 97. Mom2Natalie | July 19, 2009 at 4:04 pm | #

I have to add that I too love butterflies … I have made a butterfly cake for my daughter’s birthday a couple of years ago, and everyone were fascinated … and every year she ask me if I could make her one again … So I definitely choose the BUTTERFLY!!!!

  • 98. Debbie | July 19, 2009 at 4:48 pm | #

  • 104. Jessie | July 19, 2009 at 9:55 pm | #

Ladybugs are my favourite – they bring back memories of being a child in my Nanna’s garden. A child suddenly becomes a big friendly giant as the pretty little creatures land on them.

The Cockroach has become my favourite bug,as I can’t seem to get rid of them,I might as well start to enjoy them.

my favorite bug is a preying mantis! even though they look a bit like an alien-robot hybrid, everytime i see one i’m reminded of when i was little and my family would keep them as pets on our window ledge :)

  • 107. Avanika | July 20, 2009 at 4:33 am | #

Wow this is hard. Finding another bug I like. If anything I’d have to say crickets, because I grew up hearing them around my garden. Now that I’ve left that house, the sound of crickets always takes me back!

  • 108. Jo | July 20, 2009 at 7:19 am | #

Well I quite enjoy a humbug when heading to the Lolly shops in either Berry or Leura, but in terms of actual insects I love the Christmas beatle. It had that lovely almost iridescent colouring and their arrival means its one of those still, magical summer nights.

  • 109. Amanda | July 20, 2009 at 8:20 am | #

Cicadas – because they signal summer and have an incredibly evocative sound.

  • 116. Katrina Smit-Eadie | July 20, 2009 at 10:57 am | #

Grasshoppers – quite an overlooked bug with star quality (Kung fu shall we say more ?), the colour of green tea ice cream….small, slim, long, elegant, with delicate wings. At least when the going gets tough, they can fly away !

Cicadas are my favourite bug because they bring back childhood memories of my brother, sister and I playing in the backyard trying to catch them. When I hear them it reminds me that warmer times are ahead.

I have a soft spot for Ladybirds. At three difficult times in my life, on each of those occasions a ladybird landed on my bag, my arm and my nose. I believe in their magic!
“Make a wish and it will come true, when a lucky little ladybird comes to visit you”

Those moulds are just adorable, the kids would love these. Some healthy vegie muffins, they will be so enraptured by the shapes they wont know they are eating somethings that’s good for them! Where can you buy them? The bee is also adorable in that mould, looks very cute [and stinger free ;-) ]

‘Beetles, bugs and butterflies’ does anyone watch Charlie and Lola? I’t my four year old’s favourite episode and book, so, my faourite bug is the mould with all three ‘beetles, dragonfly and butterflies.’ Imagine a cake to match her favourite book!

  • 134. Rosa | July 21, 2009 at 7:32 pm | #

I would have to go with the favoured choice of ladybug, for the awesome contrast and the teeny-tininess… But there is a certain someone whispering ‘bullet ant’ in my ear! Mind you, he also tells me I’m getting toothpaste for my birthday so perhaps we’ll disregard that opinion! ;-)

  • 135. Janine | July 21, 2009 at 9:00 pm | #

My favorite bug has to be a dragonfly- I went to a cooking school in Mexico where the dragonfly motif was everywhere- on the walls, in the tiling of the swimming pool- on the note paper. When I see one I think of that time.

  • 136. Avanika (Yumsilicious Bakes) | July 22, 2009 at 6:06 am | #

Oooh I cant believe I forgot this 1 bug… the grasshopper!! I love them because of that fairy-tale/story I read when I was a kid, can’t remember its name though!

  • 137. Chris | July 22, 2009 at 7:08 am | #

My favourite just has to be the dragonfly – I have a beautiful metal one that “lives ” in a big pot of ginger on my deck. The colours are stunning !

I love the honey bee mold too! quite unusual….and plus my name means honey bee!

  • 140. B. Krystyna Michnows | July 22, 2009 at 11:59 am | #

My favourite has to be the bee were we get Mother Nature’s most revereed gift HONEY. Not only does the honey to sweeten cakes, tea, if you are lucky enough to have bees at home,I’ve used pure honey to heal a cut within days, Home grown honey also has other medicinal purpose.Without Bees, we would not have beautiful flowers, or trees I love chewing the honeycomb when you bite into it, it oozes that warm beautiful golden syrup in your mouth. As soon as they are born,Bees instinctively know their place in the tree of life,For example you have the Worker bee who scouts out different area for collecting pollen, within milliseconds of returning to the hive the next bee immediately knows where to go collect & pollinate flowers, Guards proctect their hive from wasps & other intruders, Nurses bees look after the new born, the Drone whose one job is to fertilize the main bee The QUEEN bee, the big mama of them all. I grew up watching these fascinating insects, One day my beloved late father,at the time had 2 hives, picked up a bee from the cold ground,he blew warm air on it & gently placed the bee on the “landing strip”- near the opening, I could not believe it as 2 other bees picked it uo & from a height of about 6 feet dropped it,Even though the 2 hives were less than 3 feet apart, these guards knew it was not theirs or Maybe it was too far gone t live. On another day Dad was rearranging the frames as bees tend to work more in one area,It was amazing to watch the bees, who work their hives in the shape oa hexagon climb over each other & reinforce the weak link. How could one tiny insect be so valuable BEES IT IS for me

  • 141. Conor | July 22, 2009 at 12:36 pm | #

At the risk of sounding like a copycat, I’m going with the bee as well! They are so crucial to the pollination so many food crops that I can’t help but love the fuzzy little things! And I’m pretty sweet on honey (ho ho!).

  • 142. Ronnie Harris | July 22, 2009 at 4:15 pm | #

My favourite bug is the Christmas Beetle (I’m not sure if that’s their official name, but it’s what we always called them as kids!). When the light catches their shell it has a gorgeous iridescence. Aside from one unfortunate incident where my brother put one in my hair, I’m very fond of them to this day.

  • 147. Di | July 24, 2009 at 3:43 pm | #

  • 155. Shayne | July 26, 2009 at 4:16 pm | #

I give my vote to the humble ant. Not quite so attractive as the ladybird, butterfly or dragonfly but I admire the ants qualities of strength, community spirit and hard work. Did you know that if you were as strong as an ant you could easily carry a car on your back!

  • 161. Danielle Gorton | July 28, 2009 at 9:48 am | #

My favourite bug should not actually be called such. The dragon fly is my favourite stained glass window with wings. The name conjures thoughts of mythical creatures, whilst the creature itself creates beauty both in the air and across the water. It is magical.

  • 162. Tanya Kennedy | July 28, 2009 at 10:20 am | #

My favourite insect would have to be the ladybird. She is so beautiful and elegant as she glides from flower to flower and always loves to say hello too.

Hi, just stumbled upon yr blog. I thk you have a wonderful blog!

My favorite bug is the butterfly! Butterflies are colorful, friendly, cheerful and inspirational. They bring joy to the heart and smile to the face. World’s greatest musical icon, the late Michael Jackson, and world’s famous diva, Mariah Carey sang “Butterfly”. Butterflies touch the hearts of many in different ways, and they are a symbol of many things to many people. :D

I love the firebug, think it is one of God’s most fantastic creations. As a kid, used to catch them and put them in a bottle just to see the light they radiate! Simply marvellous. Also a great way to reminsce childhood, unlike the kids of today, who only have their computer games to keep them company.

My favoutrite would be caterpillars. They are regarded as a pest and ugly creatures, and no-one seems to like them, but everyone loves butterflies (just read the other posts). I think its a good reminder of the potential that people can have, that even the ugly and unwanted can blossom into the most beautiful given time and space to do so.

  • 192. Denea | August 9, 2009 at 9:46 pm | #

My favourite would have to be “Gloiathus” the African horn beetle. It’s hideous to look at but undergoes 3 “morph” stages, the butterfly only goes through 1 therefore risking death 3 times to reach maturity! Brave little thing!

  • 193. jl | August 9, 2009 at 9:53 pm | #

Ants…facinating creatures…such busy busy creatures and always about with a purpose!

  • 194. Penny | August 10, 2009 at 9:15 am | #

I like Rhino beetles. They’re mostly in QLD and they are just incredible, not to mention huge with a big horn on their nose like a rhino! When you touch them gently on their back, they hiss at you too. The boys where I used to work would put them in the cash register so when you opened the till and put your hand in, you would touch the beetle and hear this big hiss which would of course makes us squeal like typical girls!! It was so much fun.

Ladybirds are definately my favorite. The red and black variety, as a child we used to have a lot of them in our hedge at the bottom of the garden and we’d coax them onto our fingers. Everytime I see a ladybird I’m taken back to my childhood for a brief second or two!

  • 203. Linda | August 13, 2009 at 3:24 am | #

Ladybeetles by far – they eat the aphids of my roses and my daughters love to hold them while singing songs to them.

WOW what a lot of bugs, NQN your site has lots of lovely admirers, me amongst them.
Take a little time and have a peek at the ‘Rain Beetles’ they are in the family Scarabaeidae, but have been classified into their own family, Pleocomidae . Only male Rain Beetles can fly. The female Rain Beetle remains buried deep underground in a burrow and must wait for a male Rain Beetle to locate her so they can mate. Aren’t they interesting? I think so

My favourite is a fruit fly because they look like flys but only smaller and cuter! And they are probably healthy, after all they hang around fruit all day!

My favourite bug is the water loving dragonfly, as it brings back fond memories of a family holiday we enjoyed in Broome, Western Australia. That holiday was 4.5 months ago and I am now 5 months pregnant with our second child ;-)
