Congratulations and enjoy your buffet! And don’t forget the stretchy pants ![]()
My Dear Readers, I have a treat for you today. If you’re a Malaysian food lover or a seafood lover, you’ll definitely want to pay attention. For I’m giving away 3 Double Passes to The Malaysian Cultural Feast at the Sir Stamford Hotel at Sydney Airport. Now don’t cringe, I know Airport restaurants don’t enjoy a great reputation but the Sir Stamford’s Malaysian meal might change your mind and if you like buffets, get the stretchy pants out!

You will feast on Malaysian delicacies from Tahu Goreng, Sambal Telor, Goat Curry, Malaysian Chicken Curry, Stuffed Sambal Squid and my favourites there like Bergerdil which is a light and fluffy potato and meat cake, beef masak manis and the fish on banana leaf which was wonderfully soft. Malaysian desserts like Kueh, Sago honeydew, Mango Pudding and Pulut Hitam (Black sticky rice with coconut) also feature. Along with these Malaysian goodies, there’s also cold prawns, oysters, crab and balmain bugs and a big selection of Western style desserts (I was too busy trying the Malaysian ones to try those – I realised that I do have a limit…somewhere).

Each double pass is worth $130 and you can dine any evening between October 19 – November 1st, 2009 which is when the Malaysian Cultural Feast Buffet is on. All you have to do is tell me what your favourite Malaysian dish is! That’s all!
Please leave your answer as a comment and you can enter once daily. The competition is open to anyone who can be in Sydney between that time. Just one thing: the competition closes at Midnight AEST tomorrow! Get in quick as there are only 2 days in which to enter

Lots of love and stretchy pants,
Lorraine

Hi Lorraine, Name my fave child? Hmm! Ok, at present I am loving the rojak pasembor from Abang Sam in Kensington, so I’ll nominate that as my favourite. The prawn “cake” with its crisp & crunchy exterior and the pillow soft and fragrant interior coupled with the peanut-y lemongrassy sauce is the one irresistible component in this wonderfully evocative delight!
Gobsmack’d
That buffet looks awesome. My favourite varied by the day. Today it’s popiah.
Even though my mum is Malaysian, she doesn’t cook at home (my dad does it all but he’s not Malaysian) and we therefore never eat Malaysian food. However, I do remember when I was young (when I was about ten years old), my mum and I used to make together for dessert and snacks those little doughy balls (made of flour and water?) which are rolled in crushed peanuts and sugar; I have no idea what they are called but I used to LOVE them! That would have to be my favourite Malaysian dish, because of the memories I have of cooking with my mum. However, come to think of it, I’m not even sure if it’s a Malaysian dessert …. Hmmm ….
hmmm.. roti.. laksa…rendang… do I really have to pick just one?
Probably beef rendang then!
Hi. My favourite is the Fish Head Curry. A friend of mine made this and although I am not a big fan of fish head it was just divine over the top of some pandan infused rice.
I like coconut rice.
I have to say my favourite Malaysian dish is roti! It is so versatile and yummy. Buttery soft, flaky…mm…and then you can smother it with some delicious curry sauce. Delicious!
I’m Malaysian so I have lots of favourite Malaysian food that I miss as I don’t go back very often. My all time favourite would have to be Penang Char Kway Teow.
I love malaysian…and well, a malaysian *buffet* sounds like heaven.
My fave food would have to be lamb murtabak
Whole fish with curry sauce – just like the one at Kuali in Lane Cove. (and mopped up with roti).
My favourite would have to be Ipoh hor fun.
Oh how awesome! My favourite Malaysian dish would definitely be dry wonton mee – egg noodle dripping in that thick, sticky black sauce rich with pork fat and topped with slices of char siew, washed down with a bowl of broth and silky skinned wontons. Heaven!
My fav dish would have to be Sambal Udang … I love the spicy prawns
!!
Roti at Mamak!
Roti Canai!!! I loveeeee it!!!
Hmm so many favourites!! At the moment I would have to say Assam Laksa has it by a nose over Fish Head Curry
My family were living in Malaysia 30 years ago when I was still in my mum’s belly, and apparently I used to wiggle around in delight when she munched on small dried fish snacks as she wandered through markets in Kuching. So, I think I was born with a predisposition to Malay food…
These days our family holds an annual peanut sauce cooking competition and I can’t go past a good Rendang or Roti Canai, I just love Malay food and would love to introduce it properly to my fiancee!
Ikam Bakar which simply is grilled/bbq-ed fish with either chilli, kunyit (turmeric) or other spice based sauce served with Mee Yun (fried noodles). Amazing!!
Nasi Lemak…breakfast of champions!
Hi Lorraine, I’m completely in love with the roti tisu, definitely brings out a WOW factor when it comes to the table, so much fun to share and tastes so GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!
I would have to say the always comforting chicken laksa. Creamy and coconutty soup with a slight hint of chilli.
I can’t go past the perennial favourite Hainanese chicken rice. It’s something I always have when I crave something delicious but refreshing in its simplicity. From the oily, textured skin to the yummy chicken stock rice to the pounded ginger and shallot dipping sauce, it’s a fantastic summer dish.
Oh that would be easy – I have two, which I really can’t decide upon!
Laksa (seafood) and Fish curry… back in my single days a group of girlfriends a’la SATC style used to meet every Thursday night at Mr Ho’s on Manly beach. ‘Special Orange Juice’ (i.e. any beer he had behind the counter) was the order of the day and our reliable favourite meals. We would catch up the love-lives, or non-love-lives, flat-mate dramas, career happenings and show off our latest shopping purchases.
Malaysian food is by nature a very social one, and although I’ve had it many other places, Mr Ho’s will always have a special place in my heart. Sadly, it’s not there in that same spot, and it’s not the same… but I always have fond memories whenever I eat Malaysian anywhere – whether it be Malacca Straits or even (fabulous) Laksa at To’s in North Sydney… (they have pretty mean chicken satay too!)
Penang Char Hor Fun.. It’s got the best wok-fried and gooey goodness in one dish. ^^
My fave is Bak Chang; who can resist sticky rice, duck egg yolk, pork, and shiitake mushrooms in a dumpling? Not me!
Too many but Malaysia’s Ipoh Hor Fun and street satay never fail to delight me!
Btw, your chicken hor fun recipe is A-Star! Have a lovely weekend.
Must say its chilli crab with roti to soak up the remaining sauce..mmm!!
I’ve just come back from Malaysia (well, a while ago now) and ate what could possibly be illegal quantities of the dark, dray won ton noodles with char siew on top and soup on the side. It’s my favourite by far (and something that I miss desperately when in Sydney).
My fav dish is nasi lemak, the ones wrapped in banana leaf, with half a boiled egg, sambal, cucumbers, peanuts and fried anchovies (ikan bilis). Cheap too, usually only RM1.
Thanks for the opportunity to win a Malaysian meal Lorraine. I’ve lived in the country for the past 30 years and Malaysian just didn’t make it to town so I’ve never had the chance to try it. If I won one of your dining experiences I would be happy to tell you my favourite after trying as many dishes as I can manage in one sitting!
i’m going to say Char Kway Teow. it’s a dish i’m trying to find a good one in Sydney
Laksa we used to do it at a sydney hospital’s staff cafeteria with a malaysian cook we had we’d sell hundreds of serves and it was delicious the way he would do it on bulk i always think of Alex whenever i go malaysian great flavours fresh and tasty
I love their satay skewers!
It’s a toss-up between murtabak and roti + rendang, but irrespective of the outcome of that battle, it has to be washed down with frothy teh tarik.
Kangkung Belachan is my must have on the table at each Malaysian, Singaporean or Indonesian even Thai feast!
Of course there must be other dishes too among the servings…tomorrow I’ll nominate a nice one.
Hi
My fave is “Nasi Lamak”!
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Malaysian. But I like the sound of Stuffed Sambal Squid.
oh my god. i’m a total nut for malaysian food
i LOVE char kuey teow
but the curse of the food lover is to how to eat but not grow to the size of a restaurant
i’ve been keeping it simple lately – LOVE a plate of kang kung belacan
don’t know if it’s any better for me but it’s green and you GOTTA love that shrimpy flavour
mmmmmm…..belacan
even though i’ve never had malaysian food before – the gado gado salad looks & sounds yum!
As a young single travelling through Malaysia in the 80’s, I was fascinated by the street food markets. It was all so new to me and the one thing that has stuck in my mind all these years, is the Murtabak. A wafer thin roti made through an amazing process by very skilled cooks, who stretch the dough with their fingers, twirling and cooking while the hungry customers look on.Have you ever seen this done Lorraine? This would have to be my favourite!
My favourite dish would be murtabak kambing! This dish combines the best of two malaysian specialities, the roti canai and mutton rendang. yumz
Hi there,
my favourite chicken capitan with roti canai
another roti fan, great spectator food, being hypnotized by silky dough pulling that becomes your delicious dinner. I would also put in a good word for murtabak though I’ve only had Indonesian versions of this dish. Yum!
What a fantastic competition! There are so many delicious Malaysian foods that I’m finding it so hard to pick just one…. at the moment it’s probably kuih lapis from Alice’s in Thornleigh, but that could just be because I missed out on it last time
My favourite would have to be Roti Canai! Good for breakfast lunch and dinner….and any time in between
Hi Lorraine, I’m a dessert fan, so my favourite Malaysian dish would have to be roti kaya. The combination of the gorgeously chewy roti filled with delicious coconut pandan filling is my idea of HEAVEN!
The Malaysian Cultural Feast sounds like so much fun (and decandence!). Stretchy pants, ahoy
Paris
I’m a sucker for desserts, and since Malaysia is always so hot, I can never go past an ice kacang or cendol!
Fav Malaysian Food – Laksa! Totally and truly Malaysian
My favourite malaysian dish would be Char Kway Teow, Assam chicken, oyster omellet, gado gado, Har Mea (prawn noodle soup)…yummmm
love to try out the Grove resturant~~~~hhehe
Or nasi lemak with sambal prawns!
(I wonder what it’d be like to combine Vietnamese and Malaysian food. Surely there’s a fusion restaurant somewhere?! Sounds like they’d go well together.)
Give me an authentic spicy laska anyday!
Give me an authentic spicy laksa anyday!
Hi Lorraine
I really like the ‘Nasi Lemak”, rice cook with coconut milk and the side dishes with belacan chili paste……and the roti with chicken curry also my favourite
This buffet looks fantastic. My favourite dish would be Malaysian Fish Curry, a recipe I found in Delicious a few years ago.
My favourite would have to be Satay!
I can never go past a good malay chicken curry with crispy light roti. yum.
Malaysian food is my best, eaten locally Char Kway Teow is hard to beat
When in Kuala Lumpur savoured and so enjoyed the Ikan Bilis Goreng at a table on the street.
This one’s tough but I would say Penang Asam Laksa which is a divine tamarind (asam) based fish stock base with shredded fish usually mackarel, noodles and lettuce/cucumber/pineapple! Finish off with teh tarik (pulled tea) and kuih dadar which are pandan pancakes filled with gula melaka and sugar. Yum….
I love roti with any kind of curry on top.
Definitely chendol. Nothing beats the combination of sweet coconut milk and chewy green worms!
I thought I was reading a different blog when I saw the title…Malaysian?! Really?! Wow! That just sealed the deal: I am SO living in Sydney…some day!
I’m Malaysian, so naturally..during lunch, we’re already thinking what to eat for dinner. Picking ‘one’ favourite is a mean feat!
Pains me to pick one, but I’ll say Har Mee aka Prawn Noodle Soup *slurp*
I love chai tao kueh (radish cake stir-fried with dark sweet soy with egg and beansprouts)! Definitely brings back memories of summer vacations spent in Malaysia/Singapore!
Definitely char kway teow or laksa. Mmm, greasy!!
Hello lorraine !
your photos are breathtaking !!! bravo !
and if you like butternut squash …in a dessert (creme brulee) come and see ciao !!
pierre
O.M.G a blog on my fav cusine..yay! lorraine is awesome! i often go out to temasek in parra just for malaysian food cos their beef rendang is so yummy!<3<3 and who can resist assam prawns?!?!
awesome post i must say!
cheers!
I love all Malaysian food, but find it hard to go past a good bowl of laksa – downed with a cold glass of young coconut juice and finished with a bowl of cendol! Makan@Alice’s does a great one with Chicken Rendang.
I love roti but unfortunately I cannot reproduce the buttery flakey melt in the mouth kind that is so ummmm!!!
my email is wrong – I just fixed it so sorry
I just love the soft buttery roti that I can’t reproduce at home!!
My favourite Malaysian Dish is Chicken Rice. I’ve loved this since i can remember and I always make sure I get this as soon as i touch down in Malaysia
Deep fried whole fish smothered in sambal paste with rice! Simple and tasty!!!
Hi Lorraine
As a huge fan of desserts cannot go past Ais kacang!
I think it may actually originally be from Indonesia, but then I think I first tasted it in Malaysia… does that count? It’s Rendang Daging. My favourite take on it is to serve it with saffron rice, mango chutney, fennel seed yoghurt and a a mini pappadam. Myumbo!
I am from Malaysia and my favourite Malaysian dish would have to be Assam Laksa. It is so delicious and tasty.
Great blog by the way!
Nothing like a nice plate of mee rebus!
I love Roti Canai the best.
Favourite of all favourites in Malay cuisine? That’s like asking a mother who her favourite child is! But if anything i’d have to say ..Nasi dagang
it’s hard to choose a favourite!! top of my list will probably be the assam laksa (sour based).. and then mee siam (also sour) mmmm.. and for dessert, of course there’s ice kacang!
Roti prata! MMmm.
Hey there,
my fave dish would definitely have to be Popiah =)
My favourite Malaysian dish differs each day according to my mood. Currently, it’s pasembur (indian rojak).
Hi Lorraine, I really miss eating Malaysian food especially hawker food as it is yummy and cheap. These days I get lots of satisfaction when I make my own Malaysian dishes but they all take a lot of work so it would be great to be able to indulge without putting in all the time and sweat. One of my favourite things to eat is the RM1 litle pre-made packets of nasi lemak you find on the table in mamak stalls. I mix everthing together until the rice is all red clolour from the chilli and stuff my face. Cheap and satisfying.
Nothing helps make working late in the office on a Saturday night slightly bearable with the thought of roti from mamak!
A seafood laksa is definitely the way to a man’s heart.
haha “stretchy pants”??? Was that one of the official rules of Buffet 101 that you wrote some time ago? Will have to revisit to make sure;)
My favourite Malaysian dish!! Oh that’s so hard, I can give you a 8000 word thesis on that. I would say it’s curry laksa though. Sadly, none of the laksa I’ve tried here has met my standards and they are like 10x the price! I’m a Malaysian studying in USYD and I’m CRAVING for Malaysian food.I tell my friends I’m not really homesick but Malaysian-food sick. Pick me to heal me!
My favourite Malaysian dish is Roti Canai. I remember when I was young, I used to go to the markets on Saturday mornings with my grandma and we would have Roti Canai before we go home.
I love Penang Hokkien Mee (a.k.a prawn noodle soup) with the flavoursome prawn stock and slurpy hokkien noodles.
p.s. UNSW makes a decent version of this in Matthews Arcade if i remember correctly.
Nasi lemak + fried chicken
YUM
oh gee…just once favourite? hmmmm…as much as I’d love to say kueh (especially the pandan/coconut ones…yum!), I think I’d have to go with gado gado. I could live off the stuff!! LOL
Hainan chicken ftw!
G’day Lorraine,
Oh, I like anything of Laksa!! It’s spicy and yummo!!
Ta Ta !!!
My favorite dish is Nasi Goreng. I order this whenever I go to Malaysian rest.
Hey Lorraine,
My Fave Malaysian dish is “Kapitan Prawn” which is Panang Style curry made with fresh chilli and coconut milk served with lightly battered king prawns. I always have this dish from The Malaya on King St Wharf. =)
Wow! Everything looks so beautiful & fresh!
I’m going to have be boring and say fish in the banana leave is my favourite though.
Definitely banana leaf rice, that’s one dish we can’t get here in Aussie!
I can’t go so I am not entering, but all I can say is that the food looks wonderful!!!
It is hard to pick one favourite dish. But I would say Sambal fish with Roti. It is a perfect mix for me. Just imagine the warm roti dipped into the sambal sauce…. Yummmm.
Great, before i know i “would” be the winner for the double pass, I should have a Malaysian dinner first. Great blog site. LOVE IT
Sambal prawns – feel like licking my fingers already!
My favourite malaysian dish is a dessert coconut jam roti yummy
Sago gula melaka and Nasi Lemak – thay are my favourites – said with mouth watering!!
Pisang Goreng – banana fritters- Fresh bananas dipped in batter are deep-fried!!! Love the mane and love the taste – Yum.
Definitely Penang Har Mee… I can have this all day for breakfast, lunch & dinner
Kuih and Maggi Goreng, Mmmmm could go for that right now
Roti with prawn kapitan from the malaya!!Totally yummy!! Hoping that some really spicy malaysian food can induce my wife into labour.Only 4 weeks to go:)
My favourite malaysian dish is STUFFED SAMBAL SQUID!! Delicious.
My comment to win a ticket to the Malaysian Food Feast at the Stamford Hotel.
Wish me luck !
Ahh, Malaysian food simply puts me in mind of my best ever next door neighbours when I lived in London – she was Malaysian, he was American, my husband’s an Aussie and I’m English – so we’d take it in turns on a Friday to have dinner in the style of our homes – and popiah stands out as a night to remember!!! So even if I don’t win a pass a recipe for popiah would go down a treat
!!!
p.s. have you tried Josophan’s chocolates in Blackheath?? OH MY GOODNESS. We picked some up yesterday and I’m tempted to drive all the way back today just to get some more – and enjoy the picnic.. (that’s my guess)
do i have to pick just one? seriously? that is an impossible task! i guess i’d just have to enter this multiple times! haha
Har mee! would definitely be up there
Roti canai…yum
The only malaysian i have had the pleasure of trying is at Temasek in Parramatta. From there our must orders favourite is their Chilli Beef. Thin crispy strips of beef fried in chilli oil with a sewwt sticky chilli sauce… mmmmm. Just remember to order a coconut juice to cool your mouth down with…
My favourite Malaysian Dish so far is Sambal Ikan. I love Malaysian sambal (chilli). Anchovy in Malaysian Sambal for nasi lemak also taste good.
Aww I can’t pick a favourite, but what I’m seriously craving for now is curry mee!
Also love belachan kangkong vegie dish.
I am Indonesian, so our food is pretty much the same……
I love anything Sambal, Sate, laksa, rendang, and much much much more. Impossible to pick one….
Rojak is definitely my most desired Malaysian dish! It is truly a salad that combines the best of both the sweet and savoury heavens.
It is healthy – apples, guavas, peanuts – and easily modified to taste. For the savoury bit, the fried crackers and dough sticks (yu tiao) that go in it are fantastic! And just remind us it is Malaysian, there’s always the unmistakable spicy-ness in the thick, sweet brown sauce
After pondering all the delicious Malay dishes, I think this cuisine is highly underrated. I settled on as my favourite roti chanai, with a malaysian tea.
Simple but delicious.
Yum! Malaysian Food! I would love to go to this. My favourite food is the malay satay. My mum tells me that when I was about 8 I could eat through fifteen or so of them in one sitting – the vendors all laughed at me! Hope I win
Being Malaysian, I always look out for feasts like these, and in true Malaysian style, it’s a buffet! BONUS!!
Oh please please please pick me!!
Fish head curry!
Nasi Lemak – there’s just no beating it as breakfast…
Love Roti. Simple but oh so more-ish! I like it more than the Indian style. The Malaysian style is so buttery and flaky.. mmmm!!
Gai phad kaprao
MMM, pick me pick me!!!
I love CKT (Char kuay teow). Unfortunately I have never tried it with cockles which I believe is how they make it over in Malaysia
I was thinking of googling some Malaysian meals and just writing one of them down but I do want to be honest. I don’t think I’ve ever tried a true Malaysian dish. I’ve tried some Cape Malay dishes which have been handed down through generations but has probably been so changed, and I’m just not sure that’s really Malaysian. Please let me sample this obviously great cuisine and I’ll promise to tell you my favourite!
My favourite dish is seafood laksa! Although I also love beef rendang with roti
I love char kwey teow!
We love Roti Chenai, and your blog
I love (1) ‘Chee Cheong Fun’ – Malaysian style with thick dark brown gravy and (2) ‘Woo Tau Koh’ (Taro Cake) with generous topping of deep fried shallots and shrimps. YUM! =)

A dish that I always finish up to the last drop of gravy and still feel super satisfied!

Its gotta be Bah Kut Teh! It’s my breakfast everyday back home in Malaysia!!
Its pork meat boiled for hours with herbs and spices.
So yummy when eaten with the soup poured over the rice + pork meat + side stuff (golden mushrooms, vege) + yu char kway (crispy chinese cruller)
Damn I’m hungry now!
Roti canai!!!!
I love it and I miss it so much!!!
drooling….
I love a dish called coconut butter prawns. There was a very good place in Auckland (New Zealand) that did it very authentically. Hope I win!!
my favourite Malaysian dish is the amazing salad rojak! mmm delicious and i also love the slight variations you get when you travel to different parts
My other favourite is satay chicken. Love the charcoal taste. But hard to make it at home. Do you have a receipe of making satay chicken to share??
Thanks in advance
Stuffed Sambal Squidy goodness!
Nothing beats a good Malaysian laksa…and there must be lots of fried shallots and fried tofu puffs in good coconutty laksa soup!
home made assam laksa!
Char Kuay Teow!!!!!!!!!
Nasi Lemak always have a special spot in my stomach.
I love all kinds of Roti, weather it’s savoury or sweet its a real treat!
Hi Lorraine! (My name is Lorraine too
) My favourite dish would be their take on Hainan Chicken Rice.. so yummmy!
Beautiful spread of food…I love the biryani condiments! Wish I were in Sydney!
Theres just to many to list but the perfect meal for me would be Nasi Goreng Kampung (fried rice, pounded fried mackerel),and
Ayam Percik(grilled chicken with spicy sauce) and
Roti Canai mmm yumm =D
and Ice Kachang (ice dessert ) to finish it off
mmmm yumm the thought of eating it =D
Being Singaporean, I love anything close to Singaporean/Malaysian as it reminds me of home.
Altho I do think the Malaysians do it better
My favourtie Malaysian dish, now this is tough would have to be a toss up between CHar Kway Teow or Roti Canai. I can’t live without either and always have to fill up when I go back!
I love Nasi Lemak.. .Especially the one from Mamak!
Hi
My friend is a Malaysian food lover and often take me to dine at various Malaysian rest (and market/festival) around Sydney. Honestly, I have not found any nice authentic Malaysian rest….so I’m really curious when you mentioned this rather unique opportunity. I would love to try their Nasi Lemak with Bergerdil, Beef Rendang and Sambal udang, which is my favourite meal.
ST
Nasi lemak hands down!
I used to eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
oh and roti canai. oh my god yum!
oh can I add two more:
sambal udang and penang asam laksa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ice kachang. favourite, with durian mash….
Segumbut curry mee from here:
http://www.weatethis.com/2008/04/24/restoran-yu-ai-segambut-seafood-noodles-chow-yang-ss2/
Favorite dish? Definitely Nasi lemak. I think Jackie M does a great job of this dish!
there are lots of dishes that i love… but one of my favorites would have to be roti canai
Curry Fish Head of course!!!
my favourite malaysian food is roti canai!
I love marmite chicken and I love that it’s only found in Malaysia! Nestled in a deep fried yam ring, it’s delicious with steamed rice.
