Win 1 of 5 Double Passes to the Good Food & Wine Show!

Chef Darren Simpson

Last week I attended the launch of LG’s sexy new French Door fridge at La Scala in Woollahra  where they revealed six new styles including my favourite, the black fridge. La Scala’s chef Darren Simpson was on hand to cook us up a delicious three course meal for us including a melt in the mouth Vitello Tonnato. Darren will be doing cooking demonstrations at the Good Food & Wine Show which is touring around Australia in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

The black fridge-me wanty! But me can’t fit in my kitchen :P

Sooooo thanks to the nice people at LG we have five double passes to the Good Food & Wine Show for any of the remaining shows in Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide (sorry the Melbourne shows has already been on and Perth is on this weekend). You can watch celebrity chefs in the celebrity theatre and sample and purchase goodies to your heart’s content! All you have to do is tell me your most indispensable whitegood product! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at Midnight AEST 11th July, 2010. You can enter this once daily.

My mother-in-law’s broke down after a huge family get together and the washing up after took her a whole day to do!!

    Love Darren Simpson!

I wouldn’t be able to live without my freezer.
I’m so busy during the week that I have the weekend to cook, and then everything gets popped in the freezer.
Stocks and soups and meals are all perfectly stored away for the next week, and if for some reason I don’t get to it. None of it goes to waste, it’s there for another day.
I can’t imagine any busy person being able to live without a freezer.

    My dishwasher…
I never had one growing up and used to dream of having a wonderful item that would magically wash the dishes… then I found out dishwashers had been around all along!!!

I love it, except if I stack it my Husband always comes along and re-does it.

  • 8. nurm@approximatecook | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:00 am | #

Definitely my fridge. It stores all the ice creams and jams I’ve made as well as my leftovers. It’s a pretty old fridge though, so I’m thinking a makeover by painting the doors with black chalkboard paint… May be once my resits are over.

  • 9. Lisa | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:08 am | #

My fridge for sure!!! It broke down while back and I was so saddened to have to use a *gasp* esky!!! Luckily it is all fixed now…

    Do appliances count as whitegoods?

If so, then it has to be my recently acquired food processor. I really do not know what I did without beforehand! I love how versatile it is and that one machine allows me to chop, blend, crush, knead and mix.

  • 11. Theresa | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:19 am | #

It has to be my fridge. My fridge is indispensable. Living in Queensland through the summer heat can be a physical challenge and most of my consumables go straight to the fridge for protection from the heat. I love the fact that it is big enough to suit a family of five but selfishly there is only me. It keeps my emergency champagne nicely chilled and also provides enough space for any mad five tier cake I wish to bake.

  • 12. Vania | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:25 am | #

    Sydney tickets please! :)

Definitely my Miele stainless steel stove.
Its certainly a love and hate relationship.

It is simply gorgeous- sleek and smooth, gleaming under the light. The blue flame dances as it flickers on at the swivel of a button. The stove is multifunctional, certainly an irreplaceable companion to cook, steam, blanch or stir-fry.

Nevertheless, its beauty makes it prone to dirt and sauces. Splatters of oil will fall on the surface, tarnishing the glow. I treat the stove like my baby, cleaning it thoroughly each time. I will def not let it lose its luster ;)

Your stove is a lifetime investment, a small price and sacrifice to make for good food

Raising my hand as another reader who could not live without her fridge.

  • 14. Helena | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:35 am | #

My fridge! It is as precious to me as a toy cupboard is for a little kid. It is like a secret compartment to stash fresh vegetables, fruits, milk and eggs, as well as leftovers from one of my failed attempts of cooking.

The freezer in the fridge is like cherry on top! It stores my ben&jerrys Phish Food when I cant stomach one pint at one go (rarely though!).

Better still, my fridge also combines my love for jeans. Nudie jeans may not be washed for the first 6 months and in order to get rid of any possible stench, it is advised to be placed in the fridge. I abide by that rule and I am so very thankful to my fridge for storing that away for me. Any other appliances cant possibly beat that!

  • 15. JT | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:36 am | #

Definitely the dishwasher, washing up is just an utter waste of time – like ironing really.

  • 16. belinda | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:40 am | #

The fridge is an essential item! ice making for the wind down G&T after work.
Storage of all pantry items:- Flour to prevent weavels, potatoes to extend their life and then the essentials, milk, yogurt, butter, fruits and vegetables. AND life’s little luxuries – Maya Green and Black Chocolate (how can anyone survive without it?). I soooo want to go to the food festival! I’d fly to it from Darwin, thought i’d probably need to purchase some winter woollies to survive

  • 17. InTolerantChef | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:41 am | #

I already have my tickets, but my favourite appliance is my huge kenwood mixer. It has a capacity of over 6lts! It makes my life so much easier.

  • 18. Sian | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:43 am | #

Gosh! What a fabulous prize! I’d love top win because I am usually away for Good Food Show in Sydney and this year I am actually here! My most indispensable whitegood is my freezer – I love to cook so freezing the leftovers and double portions is essential!

  • 19. Nevzmum | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:44 am | #

My most indispensable whitegood is definitely the dishwasher…before babies we didn’t have one and my husband would do the dishes now we have children and a dishwasher he bathes the kids while I pack the dishes in the dishwasher!

  • 20. Cristina | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:47 am | #

Not only is Life Good but without my LG fridge my food wouldn’t look and more importantly taste so good.

  • 21. milkteaxx | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:50 am | #

my new blender? i love it, its an essential when it comes to baking <3

  • 22. Sweet-Tooth | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:50 am | #

    Hi

I always want to go to Good Food and Wine, there’s this chocolate that they only sell there and I’ve been craving for it :(
So my indispensable whitegood is my microwave oven….it’s the most handy thing in the world, multifunction, easy to use and easy to clean.

    Cheers
    ST

  • 23. Lilia | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:54 am | #

Couldn’t live without a big fridge & freezer. I could make lots of home cooking ala Masterchef and need the fridge to keep some of these for future quick meals (ie beef stroganoff). Also I need to keep these Asian sauces in the fridge which make my fridge’s side shelf full of sauce bottles.
Elegant french door fridge? Do you have the picture? I am curious of how it look.

  • 24. Carolyn Jung | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:56 am | #

So black is making a comeback after these past few years of stainless steel being so in vogue in kitchens? Interesting! But then again, like a little black dress, it probably never goes out of style too long. ;)

  • 25. Barbara Harris | July 3rd, 2010 at 9:59 am | #

    My Dishwasher.I hate doing dishes.

    MY OVEN/STOVETOP, OF COURSE!! :)

  • 27. KirstyS | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:03 am | #

    Ohhh… Brisbane tickets, please!

I think, for me, it is my freezer. I live on an island with no shops which means grocery shopping once a week and anything I get needs to be stored. I buy six loaves of bread at a time and that needs to go somewhere! There’s also meat (bought in bulk) and containers of things like soup, chilli con carne, trays of lasagne that I’ve made for lazy nights. I love my freezer!

  • 28. Mark | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:09 am | #

my fridge & it’s ice maker!

  • 29. MaidInAustralia | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:15 am | #

Definitely the dishwasher … two kids and a cat mean it’s full practically every day. Makes my life much easier and gives me more time to cook for them.

  • 30. Moya | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:16 am | #

Has to be my fridge, ours broke down a couple of years ago and apart from the loss of all the goodies inside, it was just catastrophic not having all the necessaries on hand!

  • 31. Matilda | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:17 am | #

I’ve been uhmming and arhhing whether to buy tickets to the Sydney Good Food and & Wine show this year so I’d love to win this prize. :-)
I couldn’t live without my washing machine. My daughter and two grand-daughters have been staying with us and there are endless loads of washing to do all the time. Can you imagine washing all that by hand!!

  • 32. Ladybird | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:22 am | #

Hrmmm such a difficult question, Lorraine… My mixer is definitely something I can’t live without – I have a special bond with that mixer, and a lot of enjoyment comes from its use – buttercream, cupcakes, whipped ganache, pavlova, macaroons…. the list goes on (and so does the baking!) :D x

  • 33. Tania | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:23 am | #

Definitely my fridge – because it looks after my wonderful fresh produce from my local Saturday market of which I always buy too much because I get sooo excited by it all!! Btw, I’m with you on the ‘me wanty’ of the fridge and it being to big for my little kitchen, I feel your pain

  • 34. Maree | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:28 am | #

  • 36. Ting'er | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:37 am | #

It will be the end of the world for me without my fridge, oven and my beloved kitchenaid mixer!

  • 37. E | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:42 am | #

My favourite appliance has to be the dishwasher!! I hate washing up and the dishwasher gives me the freedom to use as many bowls and pots when I am cooking as I like! :p

  • 38. anthony | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:47 am | #

I know it sounds strange but I love my sandwich press and use it regularly. I could not live without it

  • 39. Sheela | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:54 am | #

Why my LG dryer of course!

I have a very naughty chocolate labrador who just loves to pull my washing off the line! Now that I have invested in my dryer I use it ALL the time, and I don’t have shreds of my bras, jeans and pillowcases covering my lawn!

P.S It doesn’t go astray during the blue mountains winters as well!

  • 40. anthony | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:58 am | #

By the way Lorraine I went to the opening of La Scale and have subsequently had a meal there with my girl and it was wonderful

Darren Simpson was there the night I went and everything was perfect

  • 41. Steph@LittlePotBelly | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:07 am | #

I think it will have to be the washing machine. Even if the fridge broke down I can probably still get by with an Esky (or a few), but can’t imagine needing to wash clothes by hand!!

  • 42. Rosemary | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:15 am | #

My big fridge-freezer…always crammed to the gunwales with all those bottles of exotic seasonings which say “refrigerate after opening”, and my frozen stock supplies. Any other whitegoods are useless without proper perishable food storage! (Sydney tix)

  • 43. Sally | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:17 am | #

My bar fridge… One fridge for food, one fridge for drinks!

  • 44. Belinda MacDonald | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:17 am | #

If it weren’t my fridge and freezer it would have to be my Kitchen aid mixer, I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

  • 45. phil holt | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:20 am | #

cant live without my microwave (or at least, my kids wouldnt)

  • 46. Michelle | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:21 am | #

I would love tix to the Sydney Good Food and Wine show. My favourite whitegood is my fridge. I need it to keep all my cheese from Paesanella in Haberfield cold. My latest addiction is tubs of bocconcini…yum!

  • 47. Nicole McKenzie | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:26 am | #

It would have to be a dishwasher. I have never had one, so it would be the ultimate!

  • 48. Susan O | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:32 am | #

It just has to be our second fridge that sits outside under our back verandah. It is close to our most used lounge room, close to our favourite eating place outside and full of wonderful drinks and food. Could not possibly live with out it:))

  • 49. Brian | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:35 am | #

    My trusty fridge.

I grew up in Wellington, NZ and we didn’t have a fridge until I was about 10 years old.
Even today I still regard a morning glass of ice cold milk as a wonderful luxury.

  • 50. Michelle | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:37 am | #

Our most important whitegood – I am quite sure my husband would say the “beer fridge”. What house is complete without one?

We would love to attend Sydney Food and Wine Show – thx Lorraine

  • 51. Amanda N | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:50 am | #

My second fridge! I could not cope without the extra space for drinks (read “husbands beer”), or the extra freezer space for ice cream! Now….if I had a chest freezer, that would be my favourite.

  • 52. Kate Buckland | July 3rd, 2010 at 12:06 pm | #

I’d have to say my fridge… not too original, but as a struggling apprentice chef & wine business student I can’t afford much more!! (Hint hint; free tickets would be great!!!)

  • 53. Steph | July 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 pm | #

The humble Stove Top. My dream one day would be to own an industrial-size Smeg, but in the mean time, I’ll make do with my wee 4-burner to cook / heat my meals (thus sustaining life), boil my water, light my matches (as I am a non-smoker and don’t own a lighter), and when desperate, provide the smallest amount of heat on those cold winter mornings.

  • 54. Zoi | July 3rd, 2010 at 12:30 pm | #

My airconditioning unit – hate being all hot and sticky in the kitchen when the oven is cranked up to the max!

  • 55. Anna | July 3rd, 2010 at 12:34 pm | #

The Microwave Oven. The one your mother warns you about, the white good that every chef wants to beat up but instead got his ass kicked by and yes, the product that melts your sensible side. This bad boy is fast, dangerous. My microwave oven will never serve a good food and wine meal but I still can’t live without it.

  • 56. Joanne | July 3rd, 2010 at 1:06 pm | #

I’m going with washing machine. There is no way I would handwash ANYTHING. Even dry clean only stuff gets put in a lingerie bag and goes on a delicate cycle.

  • 57. meg | July 3rd, 2010 at 1:06 pm | #

It would have to be my fridge! After raising my 2 older kids without one (it blew up when my eldest was 3yrs)I am still dumbstruck by how much easier it is with the little one when I don’t have to go shopping every day,(Yippeeeeeeee)after doing just that for 15yrs.

P.S… Please let me win, I have never gone due to my lack of budget & have always dreampt of getting there.

  • 58. Robyn | July 3rd, 2010 at 1:16 pm | #

My refrigerator would be the whitegood I would have great difficulty doing without – in the midst of summer it stores almost everything with the exception fo dry goods!

  • 59. Cass Ward | July 3rd, 2010 at 1:19 pm | #

I would have to say my dishwasher. After years of not having one I love not having to do the dishes.

  • 60. Kate | July 3rd, 2010 at 1:38 pm | #

Has to be dishwasher – when you live in a flat full of girls no one needs to get to catty over who should wash up…so bring on more glasses of wine and cheese platters!

  • 61. Howard | July 3rd, 2010 at 1:44 pm | #

No doubt about it – it’s the fridge-freezer. Two years ago mine broke down in mid summer, what a miserable life it was until the new one arrived. We just take this item too much for granted.

  • 62. Donna | July 3rd, 2010 at 2:05 pm | #

My stove/oven! I rent so don’t have the stove/oven that I’d have if I was to choose it, but it’s still indispensable!! I generally find cooking and baking relaxing and fun, don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t cook at home.

But for whitegoods that I’ve chosen myself, my new fridge/freezer would have to win. It’s so much bigger than my last one and everything seems to last longer in it too :)

  • 63. cathestrophic | July 3rd, 2010 at 2:26 pm | #

Definitely my dishwasher (although the fridge is up there of course). When my husband and I were looking for rental properties, dishwasher was the number 1 item on the ‘must have’ list. It saves us so many arguments and keeps us happily married!! Now if only I could find a self cleaning fridge that can find the furry leftovers hiding at the back :/

  • 64. Mousey888 | July 3rd, 2010 at 2:33 pm | #

My two fridges. Lots of room for shopping, then cooking and freezing meals to make the working week easier.

  • 65. Mandy | July 3rd, 2010 at 2:47 pm | #

My oven!!!!! I make cakes for others in my spare time, so its used almost daily. Without it I might have to sit down and relax after work (the horror) he he.

  • 66. Rachael | July 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 pm | #

The stove. The fridge I can live without (to a certain extent) by buying fresh meal-to-meal produce on a daily basis. BUT the stove(?), it has to be the stove!!

    I would love Sydney tickets!

  • 67. Julia | July 3rd, 2010 at 3:43 pm | #

I love dishwashers…when we moved from our last place in Ashfield to Parramatta, we knew we’d be losing the dishwasher and within a week I was wishing we could buy one (no space)…our next place is totally having one…saves my life!!!

  • 68. Jenni Noble | July 3rd, 2010 at 4:17 pm | #

my dishwasher – so I spend less time cleaning up and more time cooking up a storm & making a mess!

  • 69. rhiannon | July 3rd, 2010 at 4:19 pm | #

Definitely the freezer – to save money we make extra of most meals and freeze the left overs, especially delicious soups in winter. Our freezer is huge (separate from the fridge) so we can fill it with all these meals to save time and money…

  • 70. Judith | July 3rd, 2010 at 5:10 pm | #

My trusty dishwasher. I love that it means as soon as one meal is over I can start cooking the next without delay! That makes my friends and family happy too.

  • 71. Nicole | July 3rd, 2010 at 5:24 pm | #

Definitely the dishwasher!! Ours broke and we went without one for year…finally caved in a got a new one :-)

  • 72. Ruth | July 3rd, 2010 at 5:56 pm | #

It’s hard to choose one but I can’t live without my fridge/freezer. Without it, I can’t go shopping once a week and stock up food in the fridge/freezer.

  • 73. Natalie | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:16 pm | #

Our “Francis Francis” Illy coffee machine. It is soooooo retro cute and gorgeous baby blue colour. It’s simple to operate with Illy coffee pods and makes a fabulous coffee everytime with beautiful crema. Not matter what our family and friends favourite, cappuccino, espresso, macchiato, mocha, latte, EVERYONE loves coffee at our place with a few sweet treats of course and lots of laughs….a perfect combination! Sydney tickets would REALLY tickle our fancy please xxx

  • 74. Leonie | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:27 pm | #

Definitely the stove. In this weather, food has to be hot!

  • 75. kelly | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:29 pm | #

My George Foreman Grill is white.Does that count? I use it for steak, chops, chicken, fish, vegetables and toasted sandwiches. On my holiday list for packing I write George and my husband knows to pack the grill!

  • 76. fat mum slim | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:45 pm | #

My microwave. It cooks a great roast chicken.

    I’m kiiiidding!

My fridge. We got a new one a few years back, and I still quite love it. Ain’t fridge love grand?

  • 77. Bridget | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:49 pm | #

mmmmm my kitchen is so small that the only whitegood is my fridge…..mmmm very old but reliable! The only other whitegoody is my gorgeous hubby….does that count????

  • 78. Miss Emma Louise | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:50 pm | #

I love my freezer, I couldn’t live without it in winter because I store tonnes and tonnes of home made stock for soups! Not very glamorous but true!

    Would love Sydney tix! :)

  • 79. Donna | July 3rd, 2010 at 6:57 pm | #

My dishwasher. This is our first apartment with one and I love it! Makes cleaning the kitchen easy, load it up push a button and then voila! Clean dishes!

  • 80. Erin F | July 3rd, 2010 at 7:22 pm | #

I was going to say dishwasher as I couldn’t live without it! But my partner just reminded me that without our fridge we wouldn’t be able to make dirty dishes to go in our dishwasher, so…. Our fridge :)

  • 81. Cynthia | July 3rd, 2010 at 7:43 pm | #

Definitely my fridge to keep all the fresh food and leftovers!

  • 82. Valerie | July 3rd, 2010 at 8:01 pm | #

My fridge – That’s where the sweets (chocolates, cakes, etc) live!

  • 83. SandC :-) | July 3rd, 2010 at 8:12 pm | #

Hi, Love your blog and read is constantly. We would love Sydney Tix. I can’t get by without a stab blender. It is the smallest and cheapest kitchen appliance I have but it purees soups, minces meat/chicken, chops herbs, makes pesto etc. I use it daily. My scanpan frypan (not appliance I know!) is also a winner.

  • 84. Jacqui Lagaluga | July 3rd, 2010 at 8:28 pm | #

My LG side by side fridge/freezer as chilled and frozen items that are needed for my culinary efforts are conveniently at hand. The double vegetable keeper allows for temperature control ensuring that my veges are always fresh and crisp while the sleek .stylish design both inside and out compliments the rest of my kitchen.Life wouldn’t be the same without my LG Fridge/Freezer!!

  • 85. CHERZ | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:13 pm | #

Hi there! Oh so would love tix to Sydney. This is hard as I find it hard to be with out any of my whitegoods but would have to vote my microwave at least if any of the others fail I can still make a relaxing cuppa in 55secs to sooooth the day.
    Have a good night everyone.

  • 86. earn | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:29 pm | #

I certainly cant live without my fridge/freezer. I need a fridge to store fruits&vegies and a big freezer to store ice-cream.

  • 87. Nazira | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:46 pm | #

It has to be the dishwasher. Where would we all be without one? Don’t know how my mum did it without one she had 8 kids and never went to bed without a clean sink. I admit I’m lazier and give up and put everything in the ‘sanity-saver’ dishwasher.

  • 88. shaz | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:52 pm | #

Is the oven considered a whitegood? Don’t know what I’d do without mine. I think it actually ties equal place with the gas stove.

  • 89. Grace | July 3rd, 2010 at 10:59 pm | #

Mon frigo, bien sur! With what else can you have the kind of relationship where you go to bed dreaming of its contents, and wake up brimming with anticipation before bounding into the kitchen where it waits, bathed in the buttery morning light. So many choices, so little time! Last night’s leftovers? Pork buns so soft they practically swallow themselves? My stomach gurgles in anticipatory delight. Or maybe that eclair from yesterday’s afternoon tea, whose oozing custard centre appears to be making a bid for freedom. At last, I usually settle for something a little healthier – a bowl of muesli swimming in soy milk. But the thought of all those leftover treasures, suspended in time and freshness by my fridge, will sustain me for the remainder of the day.

  • 90. isLa | July 3rd, 2010 at 11:28 pm | #

Definitely the oven of ours, which bakes lovely Chocolate Self-Saucing Puddings by Bill’s (http://www.lifestylefood.com.au/recipes/34/chocolate-selfsaucing-pudding), muffins, cakes & the lot! Don’t forget about the savoury – roast chicken & lamb & beef, baked fish, baked vegetables.. I don’t think I can live without my trusty oven!

LOVE that fridge! What a great giveaway!

  • 94. Loll | July 4th, 2010 at 12:38 am | #

Ooh, tough choice. Besides my wonderful fridge, I think my Kenwood hand beater would be my most cherished white good. I use it almost every day!

Fridge hands down- can’t live without my ice cream

  • 96. Melissa | July 4th, 2010 at 1:39 am | #

hmm tough one. my fridge cause thats where I keep my yummy foods…..but the dishwasher has been my savior many times over! Can I say both????

  • 97. kiska | July 4th, 2010 at 1:43 am | #

Since the birth of my daughter, my washing machine has become my best friend. It’s quick, efficient and eco-friendly. Does a load in 15 mins. Love it. Also, my Braun mixer/blender/chopper – what a brilliant appliance, not sure if it counts as white goods, as it’s not actually WHITE…

  • 98. kiska | July 4th, 2010 at 1:45 am | #

But I dream of a day when I will have a large kitchen and in it I shall have a huge upside down fridge, a lovely stove and a good microwave… Yes, one day.

  • 100. jess | July 4th, 2010 at 3:07 am | #

Our family wouldn’t be able to live without the dishwasher because we always have 2 days worth of dishes piled up before someone can find time to put them in the dishwasher

  • 101. Chris | July 4th, 2010 at 9:04 am | #

I’m another vote for the dishwasher as it allows me to spend more time with family or friends when entertaining and no big clean up later on. “The Fairy ” does it while I sleep

  • 102. Cath | July 4th, 2010 at 9:12 am | #

My dishwasher!! It is good for the soul to live without a dishwasher for a couple of years…what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger… we didn’t have one for 4 years when we first bought our house but it was on the top of the list when doing kitchen renos!

  • 103. Christina Miyoko | July 4th, 2010 at 9:15 am | #

Definitely my fridge. I just took a Food Science and Technology course at UNSW and the lesson about harmful microorganisms scared me so much that I always put all my food in the fridge now just in case!

Also, I’m from Texas, but I was in Sydney for the semester and now the winter (my summer vacation) and I stumbled across your blog and became completely addicted! It’s beautiful.

  • 104. Rissy | July 4th, 2010 at 9:47 am | #

As an ice-cream fan, my freezer is indispensable. Without a freezer, all my Ben & Jerry’s would be Binned & Slurry! :(

  • 105. EJ | July 4th, 2010 at 9:52 am | #

Haha, I’m going to say my washing machine actually.

Whether cooking or eating, I always manage to cause some sort of food stain on my clothes – and all the more when I’m wearing white!

  • 106. Helena | July 4th, 2010 at 10:11 am | #

My fridge of course! i dont know what i’ll do without her. Yes, i refer to my fridge as a her. The fridge is like a storage machine which suspends time and decay. My beloved salmon lasts longer, my banana stays yellow, and my soy milk remains creamy. Being a fickle person, I can never choose what to eat. Hence, I always end up buying too much groceries than needed. I’ll ponder about what to cook or eat almost every single day, abandoning leftovers from last night. My fridge works wonders to accommodate my fickle nature.

And you still wonder why i refer to “it” as a “her” ;)

P.S: it will be so very wonderful if i can win the sydney tickets please

  • 107. Vania | July 4th, 2010 at 10:16 am | #

    Selamat pagi! Good morning!

Holla to you lorraine from Sydney! The best indisputable white good is undoubtedly the one and truly stove. Be it to warm you with a nice pot of chicken soup for the soul (pardon the pun!) or fluffy scrambled eggs to start a Sunday morning. The stove ignites the creativity inside everyone, triggering new cooking ideas and creations. Just by adjusting the flame, it does wonder to the food we’re cooking. Thats how practical and useful it is!

  • 108. monica | July 4th, 2010 at 10:37 am | #

Well most def my fridge …. its stores all our lovelly goodies …. and gets said hello to more times during the day by my four yr old than i can count (picture her haging of the door looking to see if by magic the fridge fairy has gone to the shops and added something scrummy since the last time she opened it ….hahahahahaha…… :)

  • 109. Jenny Gross | July 4th, 2010 at 11:54 am | #

What a blessing my fridge is
    24 massive hours
used whether it rains or it showers
    all the long day through
    I couldn’t live without it
It stores all my secrets and essentials
What a difference my fridge makes
Fisher & Paykel, I love you!

  • 110. Jo | July 4th, 2010 at 12:00 pm | #

It would have to be my clothes dryer, because I couldn’t manage without soft fluffy bath towels! :)

  • 111. JT | July 4th, 2010 at 12:47 pm | #

    My gas stove!
Which mind you, lives outside with a makeshift cardboard box casing (made from the box that our 20yo fridge came in and bound together by copious amounts of duct tape!) to keep the wind out.

I’m still living with my parents and my dad can’t handle the smell (or amazing scent rather!) of cooking food inside the house.

It’s especially awful in winter cooking outside (in a puffy jacket restricting movement and such) when it’s raining and freezing but you know what? It kinda doubles as a heater AND i can tempt my neighbours with the delicious wafting aromas :)

I probably wouldn’t have it any other way considering it keeps my dad fed and stops the constant whingeing about the house smelling like oil :P

  • 115. Kay Pratt | July 4th, 2010 at 4:42 pm | #

I would love a dishwasher…I have 6 children..and some years ago my husband sent me away for the weekend and he had a new kitchen installed during my absence….however he did NOT give me a dishwasher…when the kitchen people enquired as to installing said dishwasher ..he replied that he had 6 dishwashes already and a 7th was not required….so even though I do not have one….I would consider it my favorite – if there was one installed.

  • 116. sally | July 4th, 2010 at 5:05 pm | #

Well of course I couldn’t live without my fridge but I couldn’t get through Winter without my stick blender which makes my soup making so easy, straight from the saucepan into the storage container, less washing up! Just made Thai Green Curry Pumpkin Soup with Yellow Split Peas, that should keep me going for lunches this week.

  • 117. Natalie | July 4th, 2010 at 7:42 pm | #

    Definitely microwave ovens!

For convenience, whipping up quick meals and heating up left overs.

I love them now even more especially as my boyfriend’s house doesn’t have one as his foodie green mean eco warrior machine housemate thinks it lends an unnatural taste and texture to foods, and also kills the environment (along with air-conditioners and washing machines).

I love my boyfriend and I love good fine food, but when at his house… I miss my microwave and pizza pockets!

  • 118. Pat | July 4th, 2010 at 8:01 pm | #

  • 119. Jo Anne | July 4th, 2010 at 8:10 pm | #

Definitely my LG Side by Side Fridge that is always fully stocked with fresh supplies. Even my toy poodle loves it .He stands there waiting at it’s door when he wants a snack!

  • 120. Shelley Pollock | July 4th, 2010 at 8:22 pm | #

Definitely my freezer! I rarely have time to cook good, healthy meals mid-week, so I freeze up different soups/stews/curries on the weekend which make for a quick re-heat when I get home from work!

I’d love Adelaide tix, if possible!

  • 121. trish | July 4th, 2010 at 8:37 pm | #

The fridge to keep the wine & beer cold as well as the milk for my tea ! , cheese to keep my pants up …

  • 122. Malli | July 5th, 2010 at 1:00 am | #

Mine has to be the stove. This is where most of my cooking happens other than the oven when its time to bake!

Id love love love tickets to the Sydney show, pleeeaase :)

  • 123. Jasmine | July 5th, 2010 at 6:38 am | #

I would have to say my oven, I can make so many yummy treats in there, that my whole family love.

  • 124. Patch | July 5th, 2010 at 7:12 am | #

I would have to agree also with the fridge. I have just moved into my new place and lucky there was a basic fridge (the shelves are falling apart week by week – so bring on the new fridge I say), as without this, we wouldn’t be able to cook with cream, butter, or store the fruit and vegies for our desserts because as much as you can buy fresh every day sometimes all you need is 5 grams which is costly if you need to pop down to the shops every day.

Every other white good I think is just a luxury whereas the fridge is a cook’s necessity for their sanity!

  • 125. Jess | July 5th, 2010 at 7:37 am | #

Definitely the fridge! You need somewhere to store all that lovely fresh food – indeed when I first got married 5yrs ago, we only had a bar fridge (no where near big enough!! And I’m still making up for lost time with icecream…) but survived perfectly with no dishwasher, no microwave (in fact still do not have) and using a laundromat :)

  • 126. Natasha | July 5th, 2010 at 8:15 am | #

My chest freezer!!!! Keeping it stocked with a variety of frozen goodies means that i can whip up a tasty and inventive meal for 2 or 20 on the spot

  • 127. Belinda Morris | July 5th, 2010 at 8:45 am | #

It has to be my microwave! Cooking for 1 isn’t all that fun it’s so much easier to throw something in the microwave and it’s ready in no time.

  • 128. Christopher Villegas | July 5th, 2010 at 8:54 am | #

My new knock of magic bullet blender! (Yes one of those infomercials gadgets>>>but I wasn’t a total sucker I found one for a 1/5 of the retail price!!!) This thing absolutely rocks, it’s smaller than a toaster & it actually works!! It’s also easy to use and wash (thank god)! After using it for 3 weeks I can’t imagine my life without it!!! It’s ridiculously fast I cannot stop using it: I use it to make pesto in less than 1 minute, shakes and granitas in a flash, salsa dips in few whizzes, soups, crush nuts, omelettes. This thing is truly amazing. NQN I guarantee if you buy this you will fall in love with it!

  • 129. Audz | July 5th, 2010 at 9:14 am | #

the 1 thing i can’t live without, a deep freezer. i have a small one at home and it’s already filled to the brim….mind you i don’t think we would dare to see what is stored at the bottom. We’ve had this fridge for almost 15years now, it’s such a life saver. especially when everything in my household is bought in bulk :D

  • 130. Felice | July 5th, 2010 at 9:14 am | #

I hate to be boring and follow quite a few of the others but I have to say my fridge! Dishwashers are a great invention but most people can get by without one. I recently had my fridge on the blink and there is seriously nothing more off putting than the smell of food and milk in a fridge that’s not working….yuk! Please, please give me some tickets!!

  • 131. Eun Bryan | July 5th, 2010 at 9:18 am | #

Does a kettle count as a whitegood product? If so I LOVE my kettle, add it’s contents to -hot tea (my fav beverage), hot spicy Korean cup noodles (so bad but so good as a snack) and hot water bottle (vital for these cold days!) :)

  • 132. Sharon | July 5th, 2010 at 9:34 am | #

Absolutely most definitely withoutadoubt “MY FRIDGE FREEZER” only 2 of us and I have a huge fridge (my husband cannot belive it) for all my lovely fresh sauces and soups and casseroles I make, fresh vegies, fruit, keeps my flours fresh and without the surprise of uninvited little guests getting on!! Would love to go to the Good Food & Wine Show – Sydney!!

  • 133. nicky | July 5th, 2010 at 9:46 am | #

Love, love, love my fridge, although I either need to get a bigger model or stop stuffing so much food into it, and basically treating it as a cupboard with a light…

  • 134. KCL | July 5th, 2010 at 10:05 am | #

Oh i couldn’t pick between the fridge, dishwasher and oven! all essential in my eyes. but given my absolute love of icecream – the fridge/freezer may have a very slight edge. then again i love my baked goods too…sigh. would love to go to the Sydney show!

  • 135. Roz Kaye | July 5th, 2010 at 10:09 am | #

Would have to be my freezer… I can live without dishwasher but need my freezer to survive… to store all my baked goods (for the nights when I am too tired to cook after a hard days work).

  • 136. Alison | July 5th, 2010 at 10:10 am | #

I would have to say my fridge, even though it currently has an identity crisis and thinks it’s a freezer!

    Would love tickets for Sydney.

  • 137. SuperShan | July 5th, 2010 at 10:11 am | #

Does the GHD count as a whitegood? :) ok well then sadly I’d say the dishwasher is my favourite, currently we are sans kitchen sink and washing up in a bucket that we then have to take out and tip on the garden. I would be in fits of hysteria without the dishwasher to take the brunt of it!

  • 138. marine | July 5th, 2010 at 10:27 am | #

    Fridge definitly…
Especially when I go crazy in a deli or market… I put it all in the fridge and then I contemplate it : “When did I believe I could cook and eat so much food?”!

  • 139. Anna Garside | July 5th, 2010 at 11:45 am | #

I can hand wash the dishes so I don’t need a dishwasher. I can buy food fresh when I need to so I don’t need a fridge. I can hang the washing out to dry so I don’t need a dryer. I can wash my clothes at the laundry mat so I don’t need a washing maching. I can cook most things on or in the BBQ so I don’t need and Oven.
So my white good that I can’t live with is the Microwave, I need a microwave to instantly be able to re-heat food.

  • 140. Kay.C | July 5th, 2010 at 12:16 pm | #

Definitely the fridge!Nothing else beats it to storing fresh produce!

  • 141. Peter | July 5th, 2010 at 12:25 pm | #

The whitegood that I couldn’t live without is my food processor. When you’re making Christmas dinner for an army of hungry friends, the food processor is a saviour when it comes to chopping, slicing, dicing and most impoartantly, creaming butter for everyone’s pudding needs.

  • 142. cusinera | July 5th, 2010 at 12:54 pm | #

My side by side fridge, so much room but still sometimes not enough space specially the freeze compartment, when I overfill, it leaks water and freezes it down the bottom. People might think…chunk the bugger out or something but I have a loving relationship with it…through sickness and health (like a husband). I unplug it and do my diy repair job, and it will be fine again:) Can’t imagine without it.

  • 143. FlowerBugs | July 5th, 2010 at 1:02 pm | #

My most indispensable whitegood is most definitely the dishwasher. Having only migrated to Australia from Asia at age 16, dishwasher is largely unheard of simply because we were used to having a live in maid doing the household chores including the washing up (oh, how I miss the days – something I now only get to experience whenever I head back home) Only embraced a dishwasher since I recruited a hubby (who by the way is hopeless at washing up properly), I simply cannot live without it now.

  • 144. Camilla | July 5th, 2010 at 1:57 pm | #

It’s a close one between our fridge and our oven. Without our fridge, nothing could be kept as well. But my oven is used frequently for baking.

Would love tickets to the Good Food & Wine Show.

  • 145. Leanne Aquilina | July 5th, 2010 at 3:24 pm | #

Definitely my dishwasher which until I purchased a new one just recently, broke down the last 2 years in a row 3 days before Christmas and of course couldn’t be fixed until the end of the holidays. I KNOW i can’t be without it!!

  • 146. Julia | July 5th, 2010 at 4:47 pm | #

my dishwasher! It changed my life and I cook much more knowing that SHE will wash the dirty stuff!

  • 147. Vania | July 5th, 2010 at 5:05 pm | #

I love my microwave oven! So indispensable. Good with leftovers. Can you imagine drinking cold milk in winter? *shudders just at the thought of it* It heats your milk up for you for a good cup of hot cocoa with baileys. Its perfect to whip something fast without having to wait for the water or milk to boil.

Or cold soup? Yeah not great a thought right ;D

Its your loyal companion for a friday night in. I know i need a good pizza for a friday night. especially with the World cup going on!

I would love to go to the good food show to polish my cooking skills and learn only from the best of the best, the creme de la creme!

  • 148. David | July 5th, 2010 at 5:23 pm | #

I’d have to say the most indispensable whitegood in my house is my FRIDGE – how would I survive without it? It keeps the food I cook from spoilling when my girlfriend works overtime (at least once a week), she really appreciates it when there is food cooked for her on the table when she comes back at 8pm… that smile on her face is priceless….

  • 149. Jen | July 5th, 2010 at 6:41 pm | #

My fridge! When you open it up there is always something there to make you happy or feel better. It is the foodies answer to a pirates treasure chest!

  • 150. Jessica | July 5th, 2010 at 6:42 pm | #

I love my boyfriend’s oven (mine is ok but his is better!)because we make delicious white chocolate macadamia cookies together!

  • 151. mashi | July 5th, 2010 at 7:52 pm | #

    My fridge!

Without my fridge, I can’t possibly make all the desserts to satisfy all the sweet tooths in my family =)

  • 152. David | July 5th, 2010 at 8:41 pm | #

the microwave – hawhaw! Lorraine, how else will I be able to make your 5 minute chocolate mug cake (a favourite of ours in my family, thanks to you!) and the 5 minute peanut butter & choc chip cookies without the microwave?

it reheats my leftovers (the pasta, the rice, the soup…) I don’t think anyone can survive without it, huh?

  • 153. Rowena | July 5th, 2010 at 8:42 pm | #

My dishwasher because my husband likes to use almost every dish, pot and pan in the house whenever he cooks a meal!

  • 154. isLa | July 5th, 2010 at 8:52 pm | #

    The freezer!
You know when you go to the fresh food markets (e.g. Eveleigh market, Pyrmont growers market) and you tend to over-buy umm nearly everything?

When I do that, I put some in the freezer to be used at a later date.. I even freeze some herbs.. and bird eye chillies because I just can’t simply use them soon enough!

  • 155. MSmrl | July 5th, 2010 at 9:42 pm | #

Got to be my large 7.5L washing machine. Imagine the days of washing boards…3 active kids makes for a lot of dirty socks, among other things!

  • 156. HW | July 6th, 2010 at 12:11 am | #

Hot water dispenser and wine fridge, if they count as whitegoods. Love my tea and wine.

  • 157. Celeste @ Berrytravels | July 6th, 2010 at 2:44 am | #

Definitely, definitely the fridge. How to cook and keep things fresh without it? I can live without a dishwasher, a washing machine, a microwave etc etc, but fridge? No freaking way.

  • 158. Karen | July 6th, 2010 at 9:38 am | #

As a lazy non-cook, the most loved item is definitely the fridge! Just open, and an array of ready to eat items magically appear ie: icecream in the freezer

  • 159. Fifi | July 6th, 2010 at 10:32 am | #

Let’s just say that my fridge and I have a relationship. I know him inside and out, to say the least. Which other whitegood could you possibly spend more time paying attention and running to, every day?

  • 160. Jasmine | July 6th, 2010 at 12:36 pm | #

My deep freezer, its where I hide all my treats from chocolate to ice cream, now just need to wait until kids go to sleep.

  • 161. HL | July 6th, 2010 at 12:59 pm | #

My favourite whitegood is definitely my green fridge (from the days when fridges came in all sorts of different colours). It doesn’t have fancy doors or stainless steel but for twenty years we’ve been sharing our love for ice-cream and cheesecakes.

  • 162. isLa | July 6th, 2010 at 1:13 pm | #

Although not food related – the washing machine at home deserves a good pat on the back for all the hard work Mr Big (a big Miele one!) is doing. Can you imagine hand washing all those linen & clothes? I don’t think I can survive without Mr Big…..

  • 163. Corrie | July 6th, 2010 at 1:37 pm | #

  • 166. Kat | July 6th, 2010 at 2:44 pm | #

    Hi Lorraine,
My oven would have to be my most indispensable whitegood. And it happens to be like yours! We purchased all our whitegoods at a home show in one go, all LG – 2 years on, they’re all indispensable but the oven is the one I cannot live without the most. PS. I was the one who came up to you at Baroque that Sunday, I apologise for grinning like a fool then being a bit lost for words… I was too flabbergasted with the thought of meeting you in person. I couldn’t summon up words to express how much I am endeared to your wit and your writing. xox Kat

i can’t do without my white fridge otherwise all my ice cream and frozen dumplings would melt ;-)

  • 168. rami | July 6th, 2010 at 5:36 pm | #

Definitely my blender/food processer. We are always thankful for the fresh juices . Also honourable mention goes to the dish washer, or is that the other way around?

  • 169. Anita | July 6th, 2010 at 6:21 pm | #

My microwave is white. Does that make it whitegoods? If so I can’t live without it to heat up leftovers, cook quick eggs and quick porridge for breakfast and soften pumpkin before I cut it. Would love to take my husband to the Sydney good food and wine show.

  • 170. Yvonne | July 6th, 2010 at 7:08 pm | #

I belong to this day and age…so definitely the fridge! Imagine having to store your fresh produce underwater in a lake or a well! Oh dear!

  • 171. Phillip | July 6th, 2010 at 10:36 pm | #

My frige is definitely my most prized whitegood although technically beige thanks to its age and repeated use.

Gotta love how it stores goodies like ice creams and cheeses with pride!

  • 172. James | July 7th, 2010 at 12:14 am | #

Definitely the fridge. I don’t know how people lived with just icehouses (although having a cool room to cure meats would be nice).

  • 173. Jess | July 7th, 2010 at 8:07 am | #

Can only be the fridge, washing can be done by hand, cooking on the bbq, but can you imagine trying to keep ice cream??

  • 174. Lauren | July 7th, 2010 at 12:15 pm | #

I have to admit to a love affair with my freezer. When you don’t have time to cook and making meals in bulk saves so much money, it’s a lifesaver. And that means the microwave gets a thumbs up too when I’m in a hurry.

  • 175. Candice Trieu | July 7th, 2010 at 1:36 pm | #

Gusto eating is what it’s about!

I would just like to espouse the wonders of my washing machine again. After my 3 year old, fan dangled, electronic super washing machine died, I had to buy a new machine. I decided to go for an old fashioned knob turning type – no more electronics that break in 3 years and cost a fourtune to fix for me! I love my old fashioned clunker – yes, it’s a bit noisy but it does the job!

    Hi Lorraine,
it has to be the fan-forced oven in my stove. This innovation speeds up cooking times wonderfully and makes “even cooking” a reality! Would luv to go to the Sydney show.
    Kind regards, Lynette

    Hi Lorraine,

thanks for the chance to win. My most indispensible whitegood would be my fridge. No fridge = no milk, butter, icecream, meats….how did our great grandparents do it?

    kind regards, Lisa

I have to say I can’t live without my thermo mix. We bumped heads at first after my housemates introduced it into the house. I thought how dare they bring such a cold machine when I, the main chef of the house, am more then happy to put in all the hand work and love into our meals. I felt cheated, hurt and betrayed. Now we’re in seperable.

I rush home after work and it’s there to warm me up in the middle of winter with something so simple as soup or mushroom and chicken risotto.
It happily obliges without one complaint when last minute crowds providing arrancini balls and pizza for all.
It whizzes and whirs to impress when the girls come over for cocktails shaking up some of the best frozen margharita’s on the block.
It was there with hot cross buns when I had nothing for a last minute Easter Afternoon Tea.
It supported me through my treacherous dieting days with it’s vitality truffles.
And finally on a cold cold night when we’re snuggling in to watch another episode of masterchef, it feeds us decadent bowls of steaming rich sticky date pudding coated with a sickly indulgent blanket of thick Creme Anglais.

While we bicker and fight, we’re not your typical traditional household and at the end of the day, I cannot live without my thermomix.

My chest freezer I would have to shop everyday without it, I couldn’t live without it’s generous storage capacity

A chef I do not claim to be,
But my oven can cook with such ease,
    From a sheppards pie,
    To a salt-roasted thigh,
My oven is all that I need!
    Indespensible!

(with perhaps some education at the Good Food and Wine Show!)

I love my dishwasher as I’m always cooking and i’m not afraid to make a mess.

  • 189. Sheila Freeman | July 9th, 2010 at 9:03 am | #

Cant get by without my dishwasher, make such a mess cooking using every item in the kitchen and with the dishwasher can get rid of the mess so quickly.

It would definitely have to be my hand blender – it works as a (small) food processor, blender and whisk all in one.

An indulgence, but I am glued at the hip to my new energy-saving, Multifunction Steam Oven! It produces the most fluffiest and moist rhubarb and custard steamed pudding, a winter-warmer I cannot live without!!!!

My most indispensable whitegood product is my dishwasher, because after a hole day of cooking, I need my dishwasher to clean the large mountain of plates, cutlery, pots & utencils so I can relax and enjoy some fine wine with friends after dinner.

My fridge .. i love to go and buy some interesting ingredients and make great things over the weekend , then store them in my trusty fridge for my weekly meals .. being busy during the week the fridge saves my bacon .. so to speak :-)

would love tickets to the good food and wine show

The stark truth is that most white goods are incredibly boring and undeniably similar.

Washing machines, cookers, ovens, extractor hoods, etc, etc

What makes a Refrigerator the most indispensable and something you cannot live without ?

Look what happens if your refrigerator breaks. Food spoils, Sleep is lost, Family gets really, really hungry. Its bad :(

Arghhhh it is so so sad but it would have to be my washing machine. With four grubby children I would handwash my dishes and keep my meat in a meat safe but to live without my washing machine…..no way!!!

My oven! I can’t live without it I prepared lovely scones for my boyfriend who love to take them to work beside other things such as cakes. And after work or study(mean being 6 1/2 hours in the kitchen) is just great to take the tray and put some fresh veggies or some chicken or whatever my mind can create in that moment. In addition, the nice smell of baked food is just pleasant. Also, the nice memories from my childhood…my mom baking the most beautiful pinapple cake…and all that in an oven.

I forgot to write my favourite whitegood – it’s my stainless steel flat door fridge – I had never owned a new fridge before this and I love it. Thanks again x
