Happy Saturday to you Dear Readers! And what do I have for you today? I have some movie tickets! The Kids Are All Right is a new movie due out on September 2nd, 2010. I haven’t seen it yet but according to my friends at Hopscotch films it is a “sexy comedy of errors about a very modern family. The Allgoods are a close family experiencing life’s typical ups and downs: 18-year old daughter Joni (Wasikowska) is heading off to Stanford University and starting to distance herself from her parents; 14-year-old Laser is hanging out with a deadbeat friend who constantly leads him into trouble. The only difference is that this family has two mums. Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Bening) have been together for years, deeply in love, and had both children through artificial insemination.
This loving but strained home life is thrown into comic disarray when the kids track down their biological donor-Dad, Paul (Ruffalo), and invite him home for dinner. Paul is a bachelor whose sudden longing for a family introduces an interesting sexual dynamic to the not-quite-ordinary equation of the Allgoods. At first Joni is so happy to have a cool, handsome dad like Paul. But soon enough she comes to realise that Paul is fun loving but lacks self-control and when he starts sleeping with one of her mums chaos reigns”.

So my lovelies, thanks to Hopscotch Films, I have 10 in season double passes worth $35 to give away! To have a chance to win one of these double passes, all you need to do is tell me who is the coolest dad you know? It could be yours or it could be someone famous! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at Midnight AEST 29th August, 2010. You can enter this once daily as long as your answer is different. This competition is open to people in Australian only as the tickets are not available for use at theatres outside Australia.
Lots of love and luck!
Lorraine

My dad is the coolest dad non stop!
Not only is he smart and caring – he’s incredibly funny and has an infectious personality that means you can’t help but love him!
My Dad is the coolest. Mum passed away when we were very little. Dad single handedly raised 3 daughters, working two jobs to make ends meet. He still managed to find the time to cook, do the laundry and accompany us on shopping trips (and helping to pick new dresses for us). He’s 80 this year, a happy old man with 6 grand kids. When I look at all the things that he’s sacrificed for us all these years, I couldn’t help thanking him from the bottom of my heart.
To you Dad! Love you lots!
Cheers,
Emily
Well I’d have to say that the coolest daddy I know is my own. Case in points:
1) Our surname is McCool. True story. Literal translation = brother of cool.
2) He took my sister and I on amazing adventures as children. School holidays were spent on cattle stations and adventuring around the NT. He used to take his buffalo swimming at the beach for exercise, and he let us ride on their backs as they swam.
3) He is a zoo and large animal vet. As a result, we always won the pet shows at school.
4) My passion from food comes from my father. He taught me to cook from a very young age.
5) He is such an adventurer. His most recent adventure was working as a volunteer in a Himilayan monastery, helping the locals institute animal population control programs and teaching young vets surgical techniques.
6) His job has taken him all over the world, and he sometimes lets me tag along. This has given me a great love for travel and adventure.
7) He never let my sister or me believe we had to be tied into traditional gender roles.
I’m much more of a handy-person than my boyfriend!
Dad really is very cool
I don’t know who my Dad is, except for the fact that Mum conceived me through IVF treatment because of his sperm donation. I was born on 9th December 1980 – it was the day John Lennon was assassinated. It was a momentous day but a very sad one for most people in the world. To this day, when I listen to Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, I think of Dad, I imagine what he looks like, how cool of him to present me with the greatest gift in life. I’d love to meet this coolest Dad one day!
Allen
The coolest dad I know would have to be my dad, William. I am of Asian descent and Asian parents are known to be straight and strict who never show their affection publicly.
When I was 16, I came home one day with really short punk hairstyle and was expecting a telling off. My mum was nagging at me about what a tomboy I looked like and my grandma was shocked beyond words.
But when my dad saw me, he smile and said “nice, fashionable”.
When I left my birth country to move overseas, my dad who never shops went shopping and bought me a whole lot of chinese medication. Came home, said nothing to me and handed me the whole bag of medication. He didn’t have to say it but I knew that it was love he was showing me.
the coolest dad is any dad that spends time with their kids, gives them lots of love, affection, attention. The one who listens and participates. The one who can be silly and serious. I have not had a Dad since the age of 6, and feel that I did miss out somewhat. But I think I know what a cool dad is like… I would love to see this film. Thank you.
The coolest Dad is the man who has been there for me tirelessly every night at the train station, holding a mug of warm coffee or soup in his hand, waiting to take me home safely after a hard day’s work.
“How’s your day been my son?”
My friend’s L dad R. When his wife worried about me after they saw me throw a drunken punch at an ex at a party, his response was “Actually, I think she’s got the situation under control.” He was the first adult I knew that kept a journal, and at the breakfast table he used to read aloud parts of whatever novel he was reading that he thought were particularly well-written.
I have to say John Travolta.
He has been faithful to his lovely wife Kelly Preston. He has lost his son unfortunately but has still managed to act well on and off the screen. He is a modern day true family dad.
ooh I’d LOVE to win these! I really wanted to see this at the Melbourne Int’l Film Festival last week but the 1st session was sold out and the 2nd just didn’t fit my schedule AT ALL. I’m so glad it’s coming to theaters.
Anyway -the coolest dad I know? Mine for sure!! Which is hilarious because 10 years ago I certainly wouldn’t have said that at all!
like most people, I think that my dad is the coolest, although throughout our growing up years we dont always think so. But when you become a dad yourself it then becomes clear why your dad tried to steer you down a certain path and not the one you were hell bent on going down. So thanks to my cool dad who didnt give up on me.
Like most older Chinese dads, my dad doesn’t talk much and a little old fashioned and can’t live anywhere besides Singapore where he lived all his life (which means he’s never come and see me in Sydney!!!) BUT he’s the coolest of the coolest dad in the whole world – never forget how he frequently stayed up all night to finish all those A* handicrafts for her artistically challenged daughter to present in class the next day. Hee!!! Love you Papa!!
my dad is great but i don’t know if i would call him ‘cool.’ i reckon jamie oliver would be the coolest because he is so passionate about everything, cooks a great meal and has quite a bit more fashion sense than my dad!
my dad has put up with a house full of females including pets he has always kept his cool & been the voice of reason – the quiet achiever that is very in touch with his feminine side very loving & supportive always. he is definitely the best for me m x
I was going to say my hubby is the coolest Dad I know, taking our baby girl on excursions to Bunnings, but I can’t get past comment #3 whose Dad is literally Mr McCool – hilarious
i could say im the coolest dad i know but thats rather self-absorbing so i’ll join the cue and say my dad. He used to do so much for us and was a true aussie battler who worked hard all his life just to keep us safe and warm
The coolest dad I know is my husband.
He makes me delicious meals, gets up early to drive and get me good coffee and generally takes care of us all really, really well.
Mine is for sure! And needs cheering up too as he’s had the flu for 2 weeks now!
Imagine a stout asian guy with thick unruly greying eyebrows, framed by even thicker black glasses. Add to that a healthy amount of moustache and lips that perpetually have a pipe hanging off it. Don’t forget the trademark suspenders that he puts on daily. That’s my dad. And he’s the coolest!
The coolest dad I know is, lucky for me, my own. He’s freakishly wise, laidback, and doesn’t suffer any fools. He also likes Lady Gaga, which is very cool for a 57-year-old straight man.
the coolest dad i know is my ex-girlfriend’s dad.. he knew right from the start that we were gay(thats why i’ve been waiting for this show to come out!!) and seeing each other and has been uber supportive! even though we’re no longer together, his secret blessing for our relationship has made it easier for us to be together.
My dad was the coolest. Did everything he could for all of us. Its a pity that like a lot of us its not until he’s gone that I’ve come to realise this.
My dearly departed dad who hid cancer from us, and still attended family reunions and always had a big hug and a kiss for us and still helped mum with home chores, its not going to be easy this fathers day without him. love you dad.
Wow, reading about all these people’s cool dads are really encouraging. Although i’d have to say like all the others that my dad is definitely the best dad ever =) i’d want to say that my long time family friend’s dad was also awesome. i’ve been friends with steve since kindergarten and we’ve had plenty of awesome times together. Our families get together for barbeques, picnics, holidays and tons of other fun times. Recently his dad passed away suddenly from a heart attack and I know that it’s been a tough time for my friend. His dad, like all our dads, means a lot to us and I’d want to give him the double pass to try and brighten up his day.
Besides my own father, Bill Cosby a man who dealt with every situation seamlessly.
Well how could I go past my very own dad!! He has just retired aat 67 nd spent his whole life working to provide for his four children and my mum! He’s the coolest and the best!
My late father was a man of few words but when he spoke I definitely took notice, but he always showed me in very many little ways each day how much he loved and cared for me.
I had the worst dad possible so I am no authority on cool dads, but I would love to go see this movie.
If I had to pick the coolest dad I know it would have to be my best friend(who I would take with me if I won).
My Dad is so cool,
He cracks us up ,
When he acts like a tool.
A motorcycle he rides,
But he’s really soft inside.
I’ll have to be unoriginal and say my dad as well. Why? His integrity. He never tries to be cool or popular, but always does what he thinks is right in a quiet, unassuming way, without drawing attention to himself or expecting reward.
Oh – just realised I submitted the wrong email address in my entry above so thought I’d better write something else in the blindly optimistic hope I actually win tickets!
My Dad is definitely the coolest. I was a very lucky daughter to have him as a father.
i’m not sure if i know any cool dad’s. my dad thinks that he is the coolest, does that count? at one point he liked to chew toothpicks (in public!) and was fond of saying things like “daddyo’s here to get ya lovie”. resulting in my mortification as a teenaged hollypop. luckily current day me finds it amusing. oops, didn’t fill the brief for this post.
My husband is the coolest dad ever! He is a role model and helps our kids to take good habits, he doesn’t give them everything they want but does give them everything they need.
He tells them he loves them deeply everyday and spends as much time as he can with the kids!
The coolest Dad I know is my Dad ,,, although I am adopted he has loved me unconditionally
A L W A Y S !!!
my own Dad was the coolest !
Lovely said . . . . I miss him!
The coolest i know is my partner who has taken my two girls as his own we now have a son too …. but you would never know that that all three were not his …… i think that is super cool and i love him even more because of it .
My husband. He’s not quite a father in person yet (give me another 3 months!) but he is already super cool in my eyes.
My husband would have to be my choice (since I have no father). He’s so awesome with our son and it’s so cute to see them together doing man things LOL
Mine….such a gentle, caring man who is ALWAYS there for us. He always puts his kids needs before anything and will go out of his way for us. He love me and supports me. While other parents dis-own due to their children reveiling their sexuality, mine never faulted…just so long as I am happy, he is happy!
My Dad is the coolest, of course! He’s a great Pa to my son, too
My brother in law is the coolest dad, he loves his song.
oops I meant son
My husband is the coolest Dad to our son, of course!
My dad is the opposite of cool, so Im nominating him as the king of the uncool. He wears overalls, watches the footy on a black and white TV in his shed and considers his cattle dog to be his best mate (the previous one was named after a rum brand). Oh and he installed an outdoor wood fired pizza oven and he doesnt even eat cheese!
Can’t go past my Dad- he makes sure he leaves all the funny/embarrassing jokes for when all my friends are over to make himself extra cool- if only he knew i think he’s already the best!
As my father has passed away he would of been the best so i nominate my uncle he has taken over for my Dad and has been there for my family and I .He always here to help
My Dad is the coolest he used to ride a motorbike when he met my mum, he drove an FJ Holden, he is recovering now from bowel camcer.
I’m going to say Brad Pitt! I mean how cool would it be to have Brad Pitt as your Dad!! Atleast you would know money is never going to be a problem in your household. Not that money is everything and I definately wouldn’t trade my Dad for the world!!
The coolest Dad is my boss. I have never known anyone to take care of his family quite so well. A wonderful person who can never do enough for this family. I hope they know how lucky they are to have him.
Imagine going to school on “Bring your dad to school day”
and trying to explain to the shocked teachers “who did you think my dad was” says Maddox Pitt
My husband tries at times to be cool when it comes to clothes. I remember my 10yo daughter (who loves hiphop) jokingly said.. Dad the top is cool but you are not, hehe!
My husband is the greatest dad, he has always been available for my girls, he’s never too busy or too tired, too grumpy or too old, they can dress him up and paint him with makeup and he loves it, he’d never tell anyone though.
My dad, if I didn’t say that it would be rather sad
My dad – married mam after 10 days, had 10 kids, worked 3 jobs to put 8 out of us through Uni. he’s a deadset legend!
My best mate’s dad – he has the best wine cellar – every time we go for dinner he opens 2 bottles of red wine worth a total of $1000 – I love making excuses to go over and see them!
Homer Simpson is the best dad. Even at his worst her still tries hard, and loves Marg always. How cool is that!
Today my coolest dad award goes to a teacher who was very inspirational and kept me motivated to push myself in both the academics and sport. He’s also a great dad to 2 boys
My wife’s Dad as he served in the Navy during the War, was an experienced Shearer and was an all round Aussie Larrakin.
The reason my dad is so cool is because he doesn’t try to be cool, he doesn’t try to be anything but himself
I think any Dad who goes out of his way to put his kids first. My Dad has always been cool and I married someone just like my Dad so good news for my kids!
I’m still sticking with my Dad as the coolest but after that i would have to say my Uncle who we have on video playing fairy’s with my sister and I was 7!
David Beckham is the coolest Dad
My Dad is so cool- he recently stayed in hospital with my younger sister for 2 weeks and was just fantastic. The Physios even offered him a job.
Well it’s cliche but I also have to say my Dad. I wasn’t the nice angelic child growing up, instead a bit of a rebel but my Dad never stopped supporting me or loving me, I don’t think I could’ve loved me at times.
My husband has to win hands down – and I’m sure my two little ones would agree! After working 6days a week, he grabs the kids on Sunday morning & cooks them ‘special’ breakfast (usually including a milkshake of choice) & then takes them for a walk to the park with the dog so I can sleep in. Aaahhh, I love Sundays!
My father of course! I do miss him
My Dad is the coolest Dad because he likes to say phrases like ‘Fair Dinkum’- I learned a lot of Aussie slang from him. Also there is the fact that when I was young he used to take me for bike rides every saturday and he would take me fishing and lots of other fun things. He was also the one that we could go to if we wanted to get out of a punishment or if we wanted a new pet (mum would always say no). He was also good for buying us treats like Magnum icecreams on hot days. I love my dad.
My own dad – he has always been the most amazing inspiration in following your dreams.
He was accepted to medical school as a young man but couldn’t afford it with a young family so provided for his family as a carpenter until we (my two sisters and I) moved out of home – then he went to medical school at the age of 52. Graduated at 56 years of age (I have never been more proud).
He taught me that it is never too late to achieve your dreams.
My father-in-law is the best! He’s always going out of his way to help us with the grandchildren. Nothing is too much trouble and he is so so fit and energetic that I’m constantly inspired.
Homer Simpson. The best dad who entertains countless kids around the world, and has been doing it for the past two decades.
Will Smith – what a fun singing, dancing, acting dad who lets his kids in on the fun but, with his wife, still keeps the family grounded!
MUCH cooler than my Dad!
My Dad is the coolest- in his career he worked his way up from the very bottom showing loyalty to the company for what they had done for him for over 35 years.
My grandpa would be the coolest dad, literally. Not only did he raised his kids up well, but he took over my parents’ roles and duties most times when they were going through a messy divorce. He has a land cruiser yet he is sometimes cruising with his dirt bike! Now that he’s hitting 80, well, he has just gone to the prime of his life! Naughty, mischievious, and youthful. Here are some instances:
- When mum and/or grandma wants to head out to a supermarket, he pretends to be asleep so as not to tag along. Then as soon as they drive off, he is up and would bug me to get a soft serve with him.
- Kids love him, not me! Once he was tapping a kid on his shoulder, and the child, thinking it was me, hit me for minutes, whilst grandpa chuckled away!
But whatever he gets up to, he would always be there for us: his kids, grandkids, family. Grandpa is the bestest and more of my own dad to me!
Hi Lorraine,
My Dad is, OF COURSE!! I know most people would say that but, seriously, HE IS
Hi Lorraine,
My Dad is, OF COURSE!! I know most people would say that but, seriously, HE IS . . . . he always has time to do what ever you ask of him and nothing is too much trouble. He helped raise 2 of his grandchildren, taking over full-time care of 1 of them. He truly is inspirational and even though he is retired now, you couldn’t say he’s stopped working!! He’s the best & coolest and all my friends think so, too.
Kind regards, Lynette
Mr G is my Dad and he is the coolest. Retired at age 70 and still looks about 50. He has worked hard and played well.
My husband is the coolest Dad I know. He works long hours in his own business to make sure the kids get everything they need and still manages to spend quality one on one time with each of our five children.
it would have have to be father chris reilly (youth off the street) because he treats all young people the same no matter who you are or what you have done
My dad of course. Even at 32 with kids of my own, I take great comfort in the knowledge that he is always there for me, emotionally, financially, as a babysitter, as a best friend. He is living proof that you never stop being a parent when your kids grow up.
A very cool Dad was my late great-grandfather who took my sister and i on rides on his golf buggy (around the streets!) and made us a billy cart
My poor dad is in hospital not well down south while I am getting over surgery from yesterday and can not fly for 12 weeks.Dad reared 7 children and has just loss his only son to cancer recently
My Dad is cool as he has always ensured he is providing for the family and giving us the best life possible.
My dad may be a dag now, but when he was young he was that hot young thing zooming around on a motorcycle. He’s shown me photos, and he was so different back then. He was in a bike gang–not the Hell’s Angels type–and his stories about those days are legendary.
I don’t know my Dad, But I would have to say Brad Pitt, as he seem’s to love fatherhood & he is a hot Yummy Daddy, & I wish he was my Dad.
I think Tom Cruise. He seems to be able to look after his family and balance work and his personal life.
My brother is one cool dad. He is a hot fireman with the CFA, a qualified nurse, a wonderful craftsman who can build anything, a mechanic and a muso who writes the most beautiful songs. He is a dad to 3 gorgeous kids of 16 years, 2 years and 2 weeks!
My dad is like Robin Williams – he’s energetic, unpredictable and an eternal optimist. But most of all, you never what he’ll say next!
My hubby is the coolest Dad
if you ask the kids…
This time, I think ‘the Kids are
All Right’!
He took long service leave, when our babies were born, so he could be a “hands on” dad. He’s bathed them, fed them, loved them, and laughed with them. He’s washed thier nappies (all of them!), and helped with thier homework. There may be funnier dads, or more hard working dads…but my husband is my kid’s coolest dad.
My dad of course.(he paid me to say that)seriously though I turned out all right.
My husband. Gave up his career for lower paying but more flexible job so he could help me cope with 2 teenage sons with Asperger’s Syndrome for last 10 years. He only complains when they pick him up and try to toss him to each other!
Oh my god, I hope I’m not too late for the party Lorraine.
My dad is the coolest because he’s always late – but for a reason.
I remember my wedding day – the bride (me) and groom were ready to take to their stage. Everyone (especially me) were waiting frantically for Dad to arrive to escort me down the aisle. Dad arrived ten minutes later, apologizing to everyone for being so late. Dad held my hand and with a bright smile, gave me a beautiful floral hairclip. Dad said that he finally found Mum’s favorite hairclip and that she would have loved to see me wear this on my wedding day, from right up there. His warm gesture brought a tear of joy to my eye. It was the best and coolest thing Dad has ever done for me.
Cheers,
Jasmine
I have just met Manaesseh a Rwandan dad of 7, exUgandan rebal fighter, who fishished paying his mortgage last week age 39. Awesome.
My mate Col has FIFTEEN children and SIXTEEN grandchildren! Yep, that’s right! He’s an amazing Dad, always has time for his children and has taught them so many amazing and valuable life skills! He and his wife are my heros!
I am the coolest dad. Single dad of a 3 yr old daughter and we do all the cool things together – from cooking/baking, dressups, doing her makeup and playing together any chance we get. I figure she will grow up faster than i realise and want to make the most of it.
My dad is cool in a kind of daggy way. I am 37 and he still watches me surf just to make sure I don’t drown.
At every moment of my life, i thought my dad was embrassing, awkward for me, really cared about me, worked hard for me…only now i realise he is ‘my cool dad’ dont care about the rest!
