Last year I attended the Organic Expo & Green Show more out of curiosity than anything else. I didn’t intend to blog it at all but when I got there there were so many delicious deals and interesting stands that I ended up taking out my camera and doing a story on it. Well it is on again this year on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of August from 10am-5pm at Hall 3, Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour!
This year chef Kylie Kwong will be there to take you from paddock to plate with her cooking demonstrations and gardening gurus Costa Georgiadis and Jerry Coleby-Williams will also be there. Beauty Chef Carla Oates will show you how to make your own skincare products at home using the ingredients from your fridge. There are all sorts of organic foods and wines as well as beauty products and I hear there will be baby farmyard animals and fashion and homewares too.

General admission tickets are $18 per person but today thanks to the Organic Expo, ten lucky Not Quite Nigella readers will win a double pass to the expo! For a chance to win one all you have to do is tell me the last thing you did that was environmentally friendly! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at midnight AEST 31st of July, 2011. You can enter this competition once daily and it is open to anyone within Australia but transport to and from the expo is not included.
***The winners are:
Number 5: Lou
Number 6: Lindaf
Number 17: Jenny
Number 23: Jadey
Number 25: Maureen
Number 36: Roberta
Number 40: Megadrama

Today I recycled plastics.
Last night, I threw another bucket of vegie scraps in the compost bin!
How great! It must be an awesome expo!!!
I always recycle… plastic, paper, glass… everything!
The latest thing I’ve been doing is cracking down on food waste. I watch what I buy and how and when I use it up. I am also growing herbs , lettuce, rocket etc to cut down on waste since I can pick a few leaves at a time
* I have 4 minute showers and turn it off in between when I lather on soap
* I use an electric throw-on rug vs. turning on central heating in house
* Food scraps, egg shells and peelings go to garden/dog.
* I use my own mug, keepcup when buying coffee.
* I always bring a recycle bag to supermarkets.
* Restaurant food gets doggy-bagged with my own brought lunchbox (I’m too embarrassed to call a harried, busy waiter if it doesn’t seem a lot to carry away).
I ALWAYS take my takeaway coffee holders back to the cafe I buy them from….. they even thank me! I cant stand throwing them away, its wasteful, and as always, put all the glass/cans/plastic into the correct council recycling bin, along with the paper/cardboard into its correct container as well …
I check all packaging for the recycle sign and if I see one, they go straight into the recycling bin and all ‘compostable’ material goes into the compost! One of the reasons why my general bin is never filled
I read your blog on last years’ expo and sounds like great fun
I always print double sided and use recycled paper!
Used enviro degradable bags for my son’s school lunch
I’m not entering this competition but I’d just like to say that I used to print every recipes from NQN and file them. Now I look them up using your tidy Cooking & Recipes selection!
Recycled leftovers for dinner – does that count?! And loving my dog friendly GoGet car share
Last Monday I created a 4mx3m Strawberry patch from runners a friend had given me. I used compost from my pile, some beautiful aged chook poo from my chooks and re-used someo old coffee sacks for the trenches in between the rows to keep the weeds down and allow access. All in all it didn’t cost me a penny and I won’t have to introduce any plastic containers full of strawberries practically every day next summer- must add up to a lot of plastic I won’t be using. As you can imagine I lerve strawberries.
Built a compost heap, we’ve reduced our waste to landfill considerably with just this effort
We have a compost drum, worm farm and guinea pigs. Nothing gets wasted! (Am not entering as don’t live in Sydney…)
I picked up rubbish off the ground after seeing someone carelessly discard it.
Reading all the greenie ‘ways’ published ere me makes me
!
!
! Altho’, I too cannot enter the comp for practical reasons, I am happy to say I do almost all the things others have written about
! Lou & Lisa g have especially impressed – and, yes, I grow all of my herbs and most of my strawberries with natural fertilizers also. Would love to have been able to go to the exhibition to learn more!
I spread used coffee grinds from the coffee machine in the office over the vegetable garden – they work as a compost and also an eco friendly slug/snail repellant
My daughter and I walked to the local shops instead of taking the car for some bread, milk and veges.
Yesterday I prepared a garden bed for planting, with lots of lovely worm castings from my worm farm. Then cooked dinner for us using garden produce, and the vege scraps were dinner for the worms. Perfect organic circle.:-)
Looks like a great event Lorraine
as i do everyday, recycle my plastic milk containers
I made an organic potting mix and planted some herbs.
I recycle! Everything I can possibly recycle or reuse gets recycled. I don’t use cling wrap or other disposable plastics instead investing in quality Tupperware which has a lifetime guarantee and I’ve recently been leaving my car at home and catching the bus. That is probably the hardest for me. I hate the bus, and it makes me motion sick.
I will nominate my school friends.. Mum’s that organised a vegi garden for the school and the kids grow their own vegi’s that the school canteen can use daily.
I ate ALL the cupcakes so they wouldn’t go to the landfill.
I always have a ceramic mug with me so when I buy a coffee/tea to take away I use this in place of the paper or polystyrene cups that the cafes give you.
I went to a mushroom-growing seminar last weekend. Need some wheat grains as growing medium for my mushrooms, found some moth-infested ones in the pantry (which would normally go on the compost heap) to use, instead of buying fresh ones!
Let my chooks out into the fallow vegie patch to help get it ready for Spring planting and turned the compost heap.
i rode my bike to the gym :O)
Organic and Green is becoming such a big thing in alot of people’s every day lives – good to see, and I’ll have to look up last years post to see what the expo is like!
I try to use grey water wherever possible – last night leftover rinse water was used to water the garden.
I try to recycle or re-use everything. I take packaging, containers, drink and milk bottle lids, tubes and anything at all usable, to the local school aftercare centre for the children’s ‘artworks’.
I recycle everything Including envelopes I always use them when sending payments to my suppliers
They soon forget about the outside when they see what is on the inside
~~All things green. Love that. We are on the same wave length, Lorraine. Green is my colour this week. xxxx Love the Oranic guy with the beard!! xxxx
I turned off excess lights that were on (left on by my flatmate…)
… If that happened, I’d probably freeze up and invite them to go to a restaurant somewhere. =P
Last week I planted fresh herbs (mint, parsley, corriander, thyme) and hydro lettuce in my sunny kitchen side window sill, so that I could have fresh and tasty herb garnishes and salad leaves with all my meals
Not to mention it reduces my carbon footprint from having to drive to the shops.
I used scraps of fabric to make my daughter a little handbag…
Does that count??
I read recently that are supposedly 800 (?) food blog columns in Australia. Now, if every one of the columnists had a blog like this, even just once, and every blogger spread the word to just ten others – OMG how many people would be making just that little bit more difference!
!
I endeavour to recycle as much as possible, ie: paper, plastic, vegie scraps, as most people do that have a conscience when it comes to Mother Earth but I’m always at my family, from hubby to daughters ,siblings and grandkids to make them become more aware of unnecessary waste.
So I believe it’s educating and encouraging everyone to practise being Green that is the ultimate solution to the problem.
My partner went to a council composting course and then set up a system of 2 compost bins for our complex of 23 units.
The scraps from 23 households now make beautiful organic compost that fertilises the trees and plants in the common areas.
I think worms are the next step, urgh!!
I grow my own vegetables in my garden, I do not use any chemicals on these. I always compost my scraps as well as recycling just about everything (including the old toilet rolls, they make get little gardens for my seeds). Have a great organic day.
Ooooohhh, baby farmyard animals! I’ve got to go!!
Today I fed my worms my veggie scraps, so that they can make fertiliser for my garden, where I grow organic veggies to feed my tummy!
Yesterday at uni, I made sure the lights were turned off after using the moot court and lecture theatres!
Sounds like it will be fun!
WE do all the basic stuff like recycle and we’ve got a roof full of solar pannels but my husband’s latest addition to our green agenda has been to instal timers on the TV and other power points so that they will turn off (rather than be on standby). This saves heaps of electricty.
Hi NQN,
I would love to attend this event, as an avid home veggie grower, my last environmentally friendly task was to feed my worms and keep them warm. I am picking my own winter veggies in broccoli, leeks, peas and cauliflower, reducing those food miles…
Cheers
Brad
I need to get more involved in recycling
I’ve recently installed a Hot Water Recirculator when I found out that the average family wastes 20,000+ litres of water a year, just waiting for hot shower. Since then, I’ve been a huge advocate of this practice, and have even managed to convince a close family friend to do the same.
Looks like my kinda thing! About an hour ago I emptied three buckets of recycling into our yellow recycling bin after sorting through it. I also used the soapy mop water from this morning in the garden
My husband and I have only just recently bought a share in an Organic Farm in Northern NSW. We hopet to provide our family with food that does not impact on animals and the environment…Yeah!!
I recycled my McDonalds packing.
I recycled papers and plastics and switched off all unnecessary electricals.
I compost for my garden
It is very small, but I recycle the pill packets.
I’m trying to grow my first oregano plant in a used plastic takeaway container
We’ve started switching off the tv and dvd from the main switch at night instead of leaving it on standby
I’m very proud to say we are a family trying to “Tread Gently on the Earth”. My eldest son installs solar panels and instead of lighting a wood fire and polluting the environment or turning on heating, he puts on another jumper and more clothing. My younger son, grows beautiful lush herbs for all to share and composts, including the coffee pods. My husband uses a bright red shopping trolley instead of bags, which he refers to as his “seniors trolley” but secretly makes him feel very French! We reuse our computer paper for scrap paper and always carry a large bag or satchel so we can refuse plastic or paper bags when shopping. Every little bit helps if we all chip in. BTW Lorraine, you and Kylie Kwong are both amazingly gorgeous, inspiring women.
We have added 3 water tanks to collect water which I use on my vegie garden and when we had our kitchen renovated I had a tap added at the sink so I have tank water to cook with and drink
I’m not entering either but I make my own cleaning products and have a small herb and vege garden. I’m also a crazy recycler and get rather angry with people who don’t recycle.
Re-used the water from washing my rice to water my herb-patch!
=)
Used an old packaging box to carry my groceries (instead of bags).
My chooks have just been fed with the kitchen scraps–nothing remotely edible goes into the garbage here.
I keep all papers so I can use the other sides of them especially when printing
. That way no paper is wasted.
Sounds like a fabulous show – definately going to check it out
I stopped eating processed foods – no packaging means no waste! And my body is much happier for it
I recently replaced most of the house and garden lights with compact fluorescent lamps!
I try to use every item of food in the fridge to minimise waste. Tonight I made a very original and tasty soup with the remnants of last week’s vegies.
I stuck my hand in the stinky recycling bin in my block of flats to sort out a bag of recyclables that someone had left but not sorted into paper, other recyclables and rubbish. I also always clean glass bottles and containers before recycling them. Pretty gross otherwise!
Bought dry beans and rehydrated and then froze them into portions so that I don’t need tinned beans.
We do most of the above automatically – also don’t have clothes dryer, just put two huge loads on clothline in our wonderfully sunny day.
On Saturday, got my hands dirty (in composted chicken manure and hay) making a sustainable ‘No Dig Garden’ pot for my balcony, planted with parsley and red endive!!
Busying myself reading your blog and making avocado hummus while I’m waiting for them to grow
Thanks NQN

Washing done with ECO Store powder and now flapping in the sun:) Try it…it’s good!
I walk to the shops for my groceries!! Pram power baby!!
I walk to the shops for my groceries!! Pram power baby!! Good for me and the environment!
We recycle all the time but I have recently started an organic vegie patch on our balcony at home and am in the process of getting together my little mini compost. There’s no room for anyone else on our balcony now but its good for the environment
lol
We are busy planning our kitchen gardens and worm farm for our new house. Going to try and grow as much as we can of our favourite vegies and particularly herbs.
Pouring pure beeswax candles as we speak! No nasty air quality issues here for my lungs and no contribution to deforestation – no synthetic fragrances, no petrochemicals and certainly no soy or palm wax!!
i quit working for kylie kwong at the beginning of the year to do a bachelor of food sustainability at uws all the way out in richmond. sometimes i hug my cat in bed to stay warm.. and in about ten minutes i will be stepping outside to post a beekeeping registration form for the beehive which will be arriving in about 3 months time!
Took myself to do a weekend course in composting and added a worm farm to our garden. Since my hubby instals the latest gadgets in home entertaining I’ve given him the idea of coming up with a device that could switch off most powerpoints at a certain time of the day to save electricity and money for the masses.
Instead of chewing through electricity and turning on the heaters in the house, I play cuddle hugs under a doona with my family on the lounge while we watch TV. Keeps all 4 of us warm, reduces our carbon footprint and shares the love!
I turn off all the appliances, lights and power boards when not in use.
That sounds great (better then the ecoexpo we went to earlier this year I’m assuming!), I’m going to look into it, it’s on my birthday too!
I just put a reusable nappy on my bub
although it is less convenient, took public transport today instead of driving the 40mins!
I spend every day and night checking all the power points in my house and switching the unused ones off. My family have a habit of leaving things on, bedrooms lights at night etc. But I do think it takes just one to start the habit and if I do it enough I think they will catch on
I grow my own vegies and shop from local small businesses who buy their stock locally. Saves on food miles and supports small business at the same time!
Volunteer at the Environmental Defenders Office, a not-for-profit community legal centre that specialises in environmental law.
Plus all the usual stuff: keep electricity switched off when not in use, recycle, use blankets instead of heaters etc.
Added food scraps to the compost bin!
Planted new plants in little pots on my balcony and watered them with recycled water!
The expo sounds great!
Last thing I did that was environmentally friendly was use a supermarket bag as a shower cap! I do it all the time. Okay, maybe I should run and hide.
used my own bottle to take out today – say no to plastic bottles!
I walked to work:)
today i walked to post office to pick up my parcel
I dedicate a week’s worth of grocery once a month to make sure I source my fresh food from local markets. This way I know they are from local farms and creating less carbon footprint!
I organised a wonderful weekend of fun and laughter for our cattle farming friends so that they could have a relaxing, much needed break from their hard work so they could return home rejuvenated to raise happy, healthy, stress free animals. This way we all benefit!
I went the show last year and had such a great time! I would really love to go again.
The last thing I did is check that my fridge has space at the top, back and sides to shed excess heat. I also regularly ensure that the door seals are kept clean and seal well.
I bought a 5 star energy rating TV today.
For all of my appliances with exposed rear coils, I vacuum or wipe off the dust, every weekend. This helps save energy.
went shopping today, and used a environmentally friendly bag so i didn’t have to use plastic bags!
I can’t afford a water tank just yet but, I have bought bins ranging from large to small to collect water when it rains and I use it to water the garden when it hasn’t rained for a while and to clean the car. I also save my bath water and pasta water to also water the plants with. I don’t add soap to the bath water when I use it for the garden, just a little bit of epsom or Himalayan rock salt, which is great for the body and the plants due to it’s natural mineral content.
I use my hot water bottle to warm me up instead of using the small electric heater.
I used 3 x 20kg empty dog feed bags to plant this seasons crop of potatoes in. Sides of bag can be rolled up as sprouts appear and more soil added to increase crop.
I use a stainless steel water bottle to minimise plastic water bottles going to landfill
I keep an enviro bag in my handbag at all times so I never need to use a plastic bag!
I read an article on the carbon tax…
Recycled some pavers that we lifted from the back of the house and had them relaid in the garden to make a new path to the letter box.
Attended the Organic Expo last year…it was fantastic! Everyone should try to go if possible. Also, look out for local council workshops on various topics including environmentally conscious cleaning, wormfarming etc. They are free and very interesting. Reduce chemicals in the home by using basic things like eucalyptus oil, vinegar etc.
I do my bit for the environment everyday including buying as much organic and local food. The last thing I did was clean out all the old vegies and fruit from my fridge and added it to the worm farm. Worm farms give you compost for the soil and fertiliser for the plants. Can get better than that!!
I wear 2 hoodies and use my hot water bottle instead of cranking up the heater when watching Masterchef.
I take public transport and recycle.
We have started a worm farm for our family of 3. Our daughter, all of 1, knows the routine of feeding them daily. We already have heaps of worm tea and use it regularly on our garden & our home grown veggies ie pots of herbs and beetroot dotted around the backyard. We rent in the inner west Sydney.
I always buy food from local producers and regulary attend the famers markets to obtain the freshest and more eco friendly food possible!
!
When supermarket shopping I choose food that has less packaging and foods that are less processed as this users more material and energy!
I grow my own veges and seasonal fruits – challenging but rewarding!
On the weekend I made my own face mask, with all organic and fresh food products – very delicious
Whilst planning a romantic getaway for my loved one and I, I decided only to book a hotel that took the time and effort to be environmentally friendly. There is an incredible selection of amazing accommodations with Ecotourism accreditation and AAA Green Star. Easy, guilt free and I can’t wait. Love, love, love to support businesses that care
I have sorted out all of my daughters arts and crafts stuff by reusing all kiwi apple butter yogurt containers.
I always bake biscuits and cakes etc as to save on buying these goods which have so much wasted packaging(home baking tastes so much better, as most of you know!
I drop off my used magazines at the local doctor’s surgery or blood collection office so that they can be read numerous more times before (hopefully) recycling. That way the patients get some articles to read that aren’t ten years old!!
Brought my own enviro-bag to go buy groceries!
Gave away some 1year old boys clothes to a a fellow freecycler who can use them instead of me storing them up.
Taught my 3 year old brother to always refill his bottle with water instead of throwing it away and even then he knows now to throw into the “plastic” bin instead of the normal rubbish bins. A small step into the right direction!
Started organic growing veggies at home.
^ that should read growing organic veggies
I just shifted to a brand of environmentally friendly mineral makeup and am absolutely loving it!
i use newpapers as a weed mat as it still lets the soil breathe and is good for the worms
Hi NQN
Today (and every day) I cleaned my kitchen with citrus vinegar, as made famous by Nellymary
http://justlikemynanmade.blogspot.com/2011/06/citrus-cleaner-goes-crazy.html
Cheap, easy, effective and not harmful to the environment.
What more could you want?!
Would love to go to the expo and learn more.
Just this afternoon I pulled all of the leaves from my cauliflower plants out and put them in my new compost bin!
Well I’m currently enjoying a very nice cup of Fairtrade organic tea from Oxfam Shop! And what I really want to share with you is that in it I don’t have your usual nasty white refined sugar, I have cocnut palm sugar! It is absolutly amazing, 1:1 ratio equivalent and tastes the same to me. Quoting the website: http://www.powersuperfoods.com.au/organic-coconut-palm-sugar.html
Enjoy!
‘To many indigenous island communities, the coconut sugar palm is known as the “Tree of Life” – this species (different than the Palm Oil tree) grows in diverse wild-life supportive agro-ecosystems, and can produce over 100 types of products from which farmers can earn a profitable, sustainable living. Producing 50 – 75% more sugar per acre than cane sugar while using less than 1/5th the nutrient resources, the World Bank’s FAO contends that it’s the single most sustainable sweetener in the world!!’ As you can see, I’m sold on it
I bring take my enviro bag to supermarket and keep an extra one handy in my hand bag.
Ivy
i turned off all my leaking taps and, turn off all my lights in the house during the day
