Win 1 of 3 Copies of Bill’s Everyday Asian!

So what does Bill Granger know about Asian food? Well, to be honest I wouldn’t have thought he’d know much about Portugal but his recipe for Portuguese custard tarts is one of the most delicious and used recipes ever. And it stands to say that Australians eat plenty of Asian food -and cook it too!

Bill’s Everyday Asian is a glossy hardback cookbook the simplifies Asian cooking-there are Chinese, Korean, Malaysian and Singaporean, Thai, Indonesian, Japanese, Vietnamese cuisines all in one book. Bill starts off explaining the basic Asian pantry ingredients and then follows with recipes like Thai green chicken curry, pork baguette with meatballs,  Vietnamese pork chop, stir fried chilli pork, char-siu style barbecued pork ribs, beef rendang and bibimbap  It’s more modern Australian Asian cuisine than hard core Asian cuisine but the recipes are mouthwatering nevertheless.

Thanks to Harper Collins, three lucky Not Quite Nigella readers will win a copy of Bill’s Everyday Asian valued at $49.99 each! For a chance to win all you have to do is tell me what is your favourite country for cuisine! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at midnight AEST on the 25th of December, 2011. You can enter this  competition once daily and it is open to anyone within Australia.

***The winners are:

Scott F. of Vic.

Clare L. of WA

Michael N. of NSW ***

Best of luck!

Lots of love,

Lorraine

I am a big fan of Japanese food as I love sashimi and sushi (plus you feel more healthier eating this!) and recently I’m hooked on Vietnamese rice paper rolls with prawn or pork! I seriously need to learn how to make the dipping sauce and get rolling!

My fav country of cuisine is Italy! Full of healthy vegetables which i can sneak in to make sure kids get their fare share. Kids love it, and we adults just add some chillis on top and hubby and i enjoy it even more.

Hehe! I already have it! One it a few weeks ago here in London. Can highly rrecommend the spiced slow cooked pork shoulder with spring onion pancakes (page 136) and the tuna kebabs with crispy coleslaw (page 89)!

The whole book is a feast for the eyes and I have been trawling, plotting and planning with drool running down my chin!

PS: Fav cuisine would have to be Japanese – seasonal, flavorful and so very very fresh. KAMPAI!

i know the prize is an asian book but i have to say Italy – the fresh & simple foods, the desserts and of course the gelato. Though Thailand comes a close second, again for the fresh ingredients and fresh flavours.

Malaysia is my country of choice for cuisine, its truly a melting pot of different cultures and food. For breakfast you may have flaky roti canai with dhal to Hainnan chicken rice for lunch to Nasi Goreng for dinner and satay for dinner. Its great to go to a country where you see how much has mix and blended! cant wait to see how Australia will evolve over the years with the mix of different culture today. Malaysia is truly Asia! is my choice

Thai for me. I live in a rural area but we have two amazing thai restaurants when friends from the city visit most of them say its the best they’ve tasted. I couldn’t say them same from most of the places to eat out around here!

  • 29. Jackie | December 3rd, 2011 at 8:49 am | #

I ADORE Japanese food. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Japan a few times, and pretty much all I do is eat.

Ramen, tempura, katsu, sushi, I love the lot.

Hopefully I’ll be making a trip back soon. Last time I had a list of all the food I wanted to eat while I was there and only barely crossed everything off!

  • 30. Christine Ellison | December 3rd, 2011 at 9:01 am | #

I seriously enjoyed the food in China. Of course some places are far better than others but there was always a LOT of variety. In one year there I was still finding new tastes and ways of cooking to try.

Eureka, that’s it, just as you said Lorraine, it’s Modern Australian, meaning food from all over the world, adapted to our tastes and ingredients and lifestyle. Anything goes!

It would have to be Australia because we offer and have cuisines from all over the world! I love Bill Granger’s Cheat’s Chips which was published in a newspaper article some years ago. His recipes are simple to follow and that makes it more likely that you will cook it.

  • 34. misty | December 3rd, 2011 at 9:17 am | #

Still has to be Thai. Love the fresh flavours and herbs.

  • 35. gummi baby | December 3rd, 2011 at 9:21 am | #

My favourite country for cuisine is Australia of course because we offer the best of cuisines from around the world. Bill Granger’s recipes are so easy to follow, we have been cooking his Cheat’s Chips, which we found in a newspaper article, for years.

  • 36. Alix | December 3rd, 2011 at 9:22 am | #

What a fabulous cook book! I do particularly love how Australians have adapted Asian recipes to suit out palette! having lived in Japan and Singapore, I would say I’m a big fan of Japanese food. I’m a Sushi and sashimi fan and freshly made seafood and sweet potato tempura is to die for. I know you’re Singaporean, and I do attempt most dishes here, but my favourite is most definitely Japanese! When I come back to Oz at Christmas I’m booked in to eat Yum Cha too, who wouldn’t love that! I’d love to win a copy of Bill’s Asian and bring it back with me to Sing!

Lorraine, Lorraine, Lorraine – You’ve set your foodie followers a herculean task. Having lived and worked in quite a few countries (tho’ only a handful or two overall), I had a real challenge in singling out just one cuisine. For me it’s between China and Vietnam – the former because of its incredible diversity and depth; the latter because of its wonderful freshness, flavours and lack of pretense. In the end though, the gong goes to China, as it offers a never ending food journey that is unequaled. And, as a first post, thank you so much for your unceasing contributions towards making this world a better and more enjoyable place.

  • 44. penny aka jeroxie | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:06 am | #

If I have to pick one, it will have to be Japan. There is so much more to just sushi and sashimi. Eating in Japan is an artform in itself.

If my pants are getting a bit tight then Japanese and Vietnamese for sure…. But if I want to splurge I can’t go past Italian! I love bill’s cookbook and this one is next on my wishlist! Combines two of my favorite things- bill granger + Asian cooking!

  • 47. Miriam | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:14 am | #

My current obsession is Vietnamese cuisine. We recently moved into an area replete with low key eateries serving vast bowls of soups and stews and noodle dishes and we have been eating out and trying to recreate the dishes at home. I am loving every minute of it.

  • 48. Min Ai | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:20 am | #

Oh it’s so hard to just choose one! I adore Japanese for it’s simple but clean flavours, Korean for it’s fiery hot chilli influences and abundance of garlic and finally Malaysian as that’s where my family’s from and there’s nothing like a good laksa to make a cold and rainy day seem not so bad after all! :)

  • 50. Angie | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:27 am | #

Wow, hard to choose between Singapore or Thailand. I think Singapore will take first choice cos of all the different types of food you can eat all day long.

  • 51. EHA | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:30 am | #

Oh, what a prize :D ! I love Bill Granger’s recipes, as they are of simple sophistication: you know you are cooking and eating something special, but there is no fuss or bother attached!! Favourite country for food: I would say Vietnam – have wanted to go there to eat, eat, eat for ages, as there are so many cultural influences at play. HOWEVER, I also have to go along with ‘gummy baby’ as Australians, more than any other nationality methinks, are putting our magnificent produce to good use in truly international fusion cooking :) ! With Bill Granger’s help, in this case!!

  • 52. Heidi | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:36 am | #

Interesting, who knew bill granger would have such a great custard tart recipe! I find it hard to choose, & while I do love Asian cuisine (mass generalisation), my favourite is Italian :)

Mexican! Yuuuuum! Love it! I predict it’s going to be Australia’s next cuisine obsession. It works so perfectly for our climate.

I also adore ‘real’ Southern cooking. Not the awful cool-whip and packaged-food ingredients stuff. I have a book called The Glory of Southern Cooking that is so deatiled and everything in it is just divine.

  • 56. Phunk | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:56 am | #

  • 58. Mary Abbott | December 3rd, 2011 at 10:58 am | #

  • 59. CathyB | December 3rd, 2011 at 11:07 am | #

Japanese cuisine is for me. My daughter-in-law makes the best Japanese curry for us – delicious, delectable and damn good tucker for us Aussies.

  • 60. Amy Rathbone | December 3rd, 2011 at 11:15 am | #

If you could call Australian a cuisine (not the tradition bush tucker, pavlova, lamingtons, meat pies etc, but the food we eat everyday) it would definitely be that. Here in Australia we are blessed with diversity and multiculturalism, so much so that stir-fries, enchiladas and tacos, sushi, nasi goreng, bangers and mash and hamburgers become OUR food.

  • 61. Tracey | December 3rd, 2011 at 11:15 am | #

    Japanese…no, wait…
    Italian…ummmm,
    Greek…ooh,ooh,
    Spanish…
Oh, I give up, I just LOVE great tasting food.

Spain, especially cuisine from the Basque region. There are a number of excellent Spanish restaurants here in Melbourne, but nothing beats joining the throngs of people partaking in the glutton art form that is txikiteo (a pinxtos or tapas crawl).

I would love to learn how to do Malaysian food. My husband works for Malaysia airlines and frequently travels there and rings me (making very jealous) to tell me the yummy meal he tried that night. We also went to the Perth royal show and we watched a cooking demonstration from a local malaysian chef and the food was so easy to make and it was yummy!!!

  • 69. retired foodie | December 3rd, 2011 at 11:32 am | #

It’s really hard to choose a single cuisine…. Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Malay… it really depends upon the mood. Their subtle differences delight and give such a rich palette of flavours. Just today my tastebuds crave Japanese….

  • 70. Claire @ CKCreations | December 3rd, 2011 at 11:35 am | #

Oh no I can never answer this question! I’ll have to go for top three in no particular order – Italian, Mexican and Asian (leaning towards Thai).

I have to say Malaysian, because it offers three types of cuisines together (Malay, Chinese, and Indian are the main influences, even Portuguese). And yes! I’m Malaysian. What’s better than to own an Asian cookbook. That way I can cook up an Asian meal after long day at uni or after hours of salvery for my assignments, and of course eating within budget :p

  • 74. Victoria | December 3rd, 2011 at 11:53 am | #

My favourite country for cuisine would be Singapore. Having been lucky enough to live there a few years in my youth, it uses every influence around it’s borders in food and has such an appreciation and joy in cooking and eating that incorporating new ideas and ways of combining food and flavours that you are never disappointed and always surprised by what you eat!

I love Bill’s recipes. My boyfriend and I were talking about this only the other day – we realised that no matter which city we’re in, all over the world, we are always drawn to Japanese restaurants. It seems to be our no-fail, go-to! We particularly love sushi and sashimi,I also tried a Japanese style beef tartare in a restaurant in Sydney which was unbelievable (in a good way!)

  • 84. Di | December 3rd, 2011 at 1:08 pm | #

Italy because I simply LOVE pizza and pasta!

  • 85. Scott | December 3rd, 2011 at 1:14 pm | #

I love to cook desserts and have generally leaned towards European-based food, largely to the expense of delicious Asian food.

For dessert cuisine, I can’t go past French with its excessive use of butter, chocolate and sugar. For savoury food, I would say simple fresh Italian cuisine reigns supreme for me.

I can make a croquembouche and macarons, but if I were asked to cook a Thai or Chinese dish, I would fail miserably. This sort of book would be a good introduction to Asian cooking and flavours.

The obsession for perfection, the place where all one shop sells is one or two items that is done perfectly, shows their obsessive compulsive behaviour towards the ultimate dish.

My favourite cuisine is the Australianised versions of many other countries cuisine.

Chinese, Thai, Italian, Vietnamese etc etc having eaten it there I like the versions here a little better.

Funniest comment I’ve ever heard of was where some American tourists in China were complaining about how the Chinese food back home was certainly better.

  • 110. Antonietta | December 3rd, 2011 at 5:52 pm | #

Simply put, Italy has to be my favourite. Why? Because it’s my background and what I enjoy cooking and learning from my mum. When I visited Italy a few years ago, I stayed with relatives who live in a small country town. What they cooked everyday for us was magnificent. Even an ordinary bowl of penne tasted extraordinary, maybe because they make their own passata, grown in their field, which overlooks a valley with mountains, topped off with fresh basil. The laid back culture made everything more indulgent. Ahh, that’s the life. It only lasted a few weeks, but it is something I will treasure for life :)

My favourite (and it is hard to choose) is Malaysia – the combination of Indian, Malay and Chinese cuisines plus all the hybrid and crossover versions makes for endless great food opportunities – I found myself writing a ‘tick list’ last time we went (in August) to make sure i got to eat all my faves and a few new ones of course….I do love Bill’s recipes – always work, and usually simple and family friendly for the time poor cook!

    Ahhh,… I wish I was Australian! darn… XD
Sounds like an interssting piece of work. Foreigners cooking other nationalities food add THE touche to a dish. Maybe it is like that because as foreigner you know that you have to make it perfect and detailed to the original or nobody will take u sirious. but thats how I see it… ;)

just one country mmm now that is hard I love all food – authentic Italian always reminds me of my time living in Roma fresh produce simple dishes big flavorsome yum my mouth is watering just thinking of it time for dinner

I have so many but would have to say Italian. Think wood fired piza, homemade pasta, seafood, vino and nutella! Yum

  • 117. Bec | December 3rd, 2011 at 6:53 pm | #

If there was a rule put on us that we had to choose one cuisine to eat for the rest of our lives, I think I would contemplate severe depression. We are so lucky that the world is turning into a melting pot of flavours I love it all. So sorry dear NQN writer I just couldn’t make that sort of choice.

  • 118. Ophelia | December 3rd, 2011 at 7:05 pm | #

Okay, I’m being a complete cheat considering I won the Bill’s Basics book competition last year (and I actually used it tonight, so it gets a good workout!), but you gotta be in it to win it!

I think every culture has something unique to offer. I love bits and pieces from all cultures worldwide. However, after having spent three weeks in Italy this year, I gotta say, they just… get food. Not even just the carbs – every day, I miss the unbelievable coffee (Gloria Jeans just don’t cut it anymore), the caprese salads, the fresh fruit made delicious by the Tuscan sun, the gelato… *Sigh* I really have to go back.

Malaysian – Nothing beats a good Laksa – the beauty being you can use add so many different ingredients so it appeals to your individual taste & style … mmmmm.. coconut chilli goodness!

Wow..what a following you have Lorraine!! 110th comment..briefly fav food? Spanish at the moment as I love the ingredient combinations especially as a tapas. I can savour a variety of dishes with the wine without the guilt trip that usually follows when eating out. Preparing Asian food has always intimidated me a little. OK… a lot !! So Bill Granger’s cookbook would definitely ignite some confidence as I need all the help I can get!!!

  • 126. Michelle Symes | December 3rd, 2011 at 8:24 pm | #

Thai food would have to be one of my favourites, quite possibly because of the nostalgia attached to both the food and Thailand itself. I had a wonderful holiday with my now husband on our way home from living in the UK.
Nothing will ever beat Pad Thai from a small street vendor on a back street in Bangkok.

Having lived in Malaysia in the early 80′s and travelling extensively throughout Asia, I have developed an intense craving for malaysian food such as laksa, spinach blachan, nonya dishes, indian flavour integrated within the malaysian style, noodle and rice curry dishes that have a distinctive and special smell and flavour that once tasted, saturates the taste buds like an addictive substance.

We selected where we bought our house in sydney in part due to the large proportion of vietnamese restaurants nearby and the promise of fabulous local eating.

Favourite cuisine? That’s a hard question. But Macanese food is up there on my list. As the review you did earlier on it, it’s a great combination of (very) different foods around the world. :>

I love Chinese food. Just like Anthony Bourdain once famously said: “If you were to cook a Chinese dish a day, you couldn’t finish in 1,000 years”. The cuisine has such a long history. And there are so many variations of it depending on which part of the country you are in.

  • 256. Joe | December 9th, 2011 at 6:52 pm | #

Japanese is my favourite, it’s simple yet complex at the same time. It’s got so much variations and history behind each dish and generations have perfected the cooking. Italian is a close second for the same reason.

Vietnam is definitely my favorite for cuisine as it offers the best of both worlds – the contrasting sweet/salty/sour/hot of Asia and the beautiful elegance of French. And, I can eat as much as I want without gaining weight!

I love Malaysian food for it’s richness and va-voom variety of flavours – it’s extremely emotive and nurturing. I love to eat in Japan for the incredible attention to detail and sensitivity in flavour combining. It is the only cuisine that truly leaves me feeling “healthy” after eating it. So, my heart says Malaysian and my head says Japanese. My stomach loves BOTH!

“Australian” food. Because we are lucky to have so many cultures in one area means we are spoiled for the amount of variety we can try. But ever since I went to Japan, and had authentic Japanese food, I am yet to find a place to give me that ‘wow’ factor like I got when I ate in Japan. *sigh*

I think living next door to Newtown for so many years and being able to pop over at any time for a late lunch or dinner has irreparably biased me in favour of Thai food :P . It’s the ultimate comfort food, and it only takes a fortnight or so away from Sydney before the withdrawal symptoms start kicking in. Unfortunately our attempts to replicate the favourites at home have never been entirely successful…

I’d have to say Jordan. There is this one restaurant that only the locals know about which serves the best falafel in the world. The late king used to dress in disguise just to go there. Except the owner tried to offer me 5 camels for my hand in marriage… That sort of ruined it for me.
