Win 1 of 3 Blackbird Hot Chocolate Packs!

Dear Reader, what do you think is the best way to warm up this Winter? Sure, sitting in front of a fireplace or heater is good but what about warming up inside? Take a tip from skiers or apres skiers and drink a lovely hot chocolate!  Blackbird hot chocolate spoons are made with couverture chocolate and come in flavours such as honeycomb, dark, milk and white chocolate. The honeycomb is my personal favourite and Mr NQN and I warmed up many a night drinking these! The people at Blackbird believe that people have been subjected to inferior drinking chocolate for far too long. So they deisgned an easy to make hot chocolate block that sits on the end of a wooden spoon. Simply heat up the milk and stir the spoon and voila, you have a delicious hot chocolate!

Thanks to Blackbird, three lucky Not Quite Nigella readers will win a hot chocolate set including 1 x blackbird chocolate spoon cup, 3 x milk, 3 x honeycomb and 2 x dark flavoured hot chocolate spoons. For a chance to win all you have to do is tell me how you’re keeping warm this winter! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at midnight AEST on the 11th of August, 2012. You can enter this competition once daily and it is open to anyone within Australia.

Best of luck!

Lots of love,

Lorraine

I keep warm in winter by bringing my husky/golden retriever puppy to bed and cuddling her. She howls when she has to sleep outside, and you know its cold when your husky is complaining :)

What a coincidence, made chocolate spoons last night to have with desert, my friends loved them! Making scrumptious hot deserts is my way of keeping warm on a cold night.

I’ve been staying warm by having loads lamb shank and barley soup and it’s been an awesome way to warm up the soul and the house smells ever so warm too

Well in our home, winter is definately the time to be making things such as curries, bread and lots of beautiful slow cooked casseroles. The food warms you up from the inside and the heat from the oven warms up the house. If I won these chocolate spoons , I would add a little chilli to the dark chocolate [very AO]

AS much as I love dark chocolate Im intrigued with the honeycomb..

This has to be healthier than mulled red wine, right?

June to the end of August – the “slow cooking” quarter! In a Le Chasseur pot on top of the slow combustion stove – eventually warming both the inner and outer woman!!

Chasing my daughter is one way to stay warm. Though recently that turned around. We were in the park after a storm jumping in muddy puddles. She bent down, picked up two handfuls of mud and said “mum mum? Run!” believe me, I ran! That kept me warm.

At the risk of getting evil looks from everyone else, I’m not doing much to keep warm this winter as I live in Queensland and it’s not cold! I should however explain that I am a native Canberran and my fellow states-men that are true Queenslanders keep saying that it’s cold. I’ve barely got a jumper on!

When the family have all gone to bed and finally get control of the remote I snuggle under a pink Dora the Explorer “blankie” that the kids outgrew years ago.

We fire up the big outdoor gas heaters, invite friends around eat, drink and have a laugh over a few card games. Blackbird Chocolate would be the perfect finale.

  • 16. Ladybugfunk | July 14th, 2012 at 8:00 am | #

Wow, my partner would absolutely love these … and in different flavours no less :-)

During this cold Melbourne winter, I never leave home without my hat, gloves and scarf and on weekends I’ve been living in my Vigilante down vest … it is fantastic!

Inside the house, we always have the ducted heating on when we’re home so it means that even our bathroom is cozy and warm :-) My partner does get a bit annoyed when he sees that I’ve cranked it up to 24 degrees {:-o hee hee

I find my ugg boots very addictive at this time of the year – it’s not an attractive look but when you’re feet are warm the rest of you seems to be warm also xx

I ride my bike all year round, and I find it only takes 10 minutes of riding before I’m peeling off all my layers and just riding in a singlet! In the house I crank up the heating, defrost some beef ragu I made a few weeks ago, and huddle under the doona to really warm up. But I just know these spoons would be the ultimate dessert on those chilly nights. I might even have to share them with my housemate!

  • 20. Melleemoo | July 14th, 2012 at 8:09 am | #

Sticking on my ugg boots, curling up under one of the quilts my grandmother made and having a glass of Mulled wine or cider!!

However there is normally a piece of dark chocolate served with the wine…so the hot chocolate would kill two birds with one drink!

Thankfully it’s not too cold up here but I was raised where it was very cold indeed. Layers of clothing work the best I think.

Also eating traditionally “warm” meals makes us feel warmer. Soups and stews always warm me up.

  • 23. Carla | July 14th, 2012 at 8:24 am | #

Keeping warm this winter with loads of slow cooked meals, hearty stews and casseroles….not to mention by tryingto perfect my mulled wine recipe!

I keep myself warm with ‘pashmina’, large scarf thingy which can be wrapped around body or neck. They are light/compact enought to put in a handbag ready to wear when cold anytime.

Layering, lol…doubling up on all clothing, so beginning to look like the goodyear blimp, but really feeling the cold this year. Lots of night time fires, soup simmering on the woodstove most of the day, and brisk walks with the dog whenever the sun appears(unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is warm, but it still feels a little comforting)

Thank you for doing such a seasonal giveaway! I keep warm in winter by baking more! The oven warmth when you open it after the baking is done feels so good and has awesome smell too! (most of the time ;) )

There is no way I could survive winter without my Boys, our tow Burmese cats. No matter where I am in the house I generally have one (or two) cats attached to me somehow. At my desk blogging Eddie sits on my lap, in bed both are under the covers with me and the human Boy (lol) Even when Im walking around the house, Rollie launches onto my shoulder and remains there for as long as he can. Just gorgeous

Originally hailing from Ireland means I’ve always been used to cold weather. Melbourne winters always remind me of home. This winter I find it exceptionally difficult to keep warm physically when I’m out & about as I’m 32 weeks pregnant and CANNOT find a decent warm maternity coat, which means I’m still wearing my regular coat with my belly poking out! LOL luckily I am still quite mobile and energetic so try to power walk for warmth when outside (sometimes with a Max Brenner italian hot chocolate in hand when it REALLY cold). When I get home, it’s all about the homecooked foods … Curry’s, casseroles and pastas … Oh and of course not to forget chocolate cupcakes and other sweet treats for dessert. I’ve recently imported 12kg of flour from Ireland and each weekend bake loaves of bread to eat with the various soups I like to make from scratch … My favourite (and that of baby) is carrot and ginger soup …. Well that’s this weeks favourite anyway!! :D

  • 46. Rayann Bekdache | July 14th, 2012 at 10:12 am | #

This winter I’ve been keeping warm by baking banana and choc chip cupcakes, raspberry chocolate brownies, chocolate ganache tarts, poached pears with a chocolate sauce and dark chocolate chip cookies – notice a theme? I’ve also been staying warm by enjoying soup every second day. My favourite soups at the moment are leek and fennel and a Thai chicken and galangal soup. Pies have been another comfort food – I made your red curry vegetable pies last week :-)
I’m always on the lookout for a beautiful hot chocolate (the best one so far has been the Africa hot chocolate from Colefax Chocolates in Haberfield) so this would be perfect.

I get terribly excited over winter fashions. Having lived in Queensland for years, it was too warm for gorgeous boots and thick, warm jackets and scarves. I am making up for those fifteen years away from Melbourne and shopping up a storm to ensure I am warm – no, really, that is my only motivation, warmth (LOL)…

It’s been school holidays and the weather, well, hasn’t been the kindest, yes it is Winter. So we’ve been keeping warm by playing Wii, nothing like competition to keep the body warm. :) Cups of tea and espresso for me and creamy hot chocolate for the little Miss and little Mr, although they can get cold while we debate who goes first.

Keeping warm??? Not!!! I’m afraid I am a whinging Queenslander who has never acclimatised to the cold. So shivering incessantly becomes second nature unless the cold snap is broken (if only temporarily) by a healthy addiction to hot chocolate – yummo!! This blackbird chocolate just might work a treat!!!!

Burn the candle at both ends at an (amazing) conference for a week = get sick and don’t feel to cold! I didn’t plan it this way but it’s worked really well to keep me warm, and despite being fairly incapacitated for the past week, I had such a great trip that I don’t think I actually mind too much!

  • 85. Daisy@Nevertoosweet | July 14th, 2012 at 4:34 pm | #

Each winter I’m forced to take vasodilators to increase the flow of blood to my hands and feet so I don’t lose fingers and toes when I can’t feel them. So my answer is – with drugs!

I was never allowed by my mother to have ugh boots – she had very high dress standards – but finally, at 46 years of age, I’ve listened to my therapist and bought some. Funny how mothers have such power over us!

  • 93. Christine P | July 14th, 2012 at 6:28 pm | #

Here in Tasmania, we really know what winter means! Frost on the ground and the temperature in the minuses. To stay warm it’s all about rugging up in warm clothes, scarves and long walks. Back home, it’s curling up in front of an open fire – and a mug of hot chocolate makes a winter night just perfect!

I actually travelled to Qatar where it is a very warm 45 degrees during the day. That was a bit of a novel way to warm up! I was almost glad to be back to frosty mornings when I returned to Australia.

i had a baby boy on the 4th of june – so i have been snuggling up with him to keep us both warm, and drinking lots of tea, some real hot choc would be a nice treat

I’ve been staying warm by cooking lots of slow cooker recipes. The smell filters through the house for hours warming the heart and soothing the soul! I have also been doing lots of washing, and although not environmentally friendly, drying it in the dryer. This way the heat generated from the dryer get pushed through my home warming it up nicely. Of course, then there is no need for heaters but it is nice to snuggle up with my other half (notice I didn’t say “better” half ha, ha!)under a nice warm blanket with a freshly brewed coffee in hand!

Two ways – multiple cups of steaming hot tea AND taking our sons to meet their great grandmother in Malaysia (and escape the chill!!). Hot chocolate would go down well, as we have our first winter in southern wa!

My friend went to Switzerland and emailed me about these…I thought she was kidding, they sounded too good to be true. Sounds a great winter treat, I’ve spent this winter trying to perfect the art of hot chocolate, but I’m guessing these spoons are better than anything I’ve made. The other best way to keep warm is to snuggle a dog (they have a higher body temp than us), and mine loves the attention. Hey I reckon those choc spoons would be even more amazing with a shot of frangelico…..now I’m drooling.

This winter seems to have been unusally cold in Sydney – or is it just me?
So I’ve been keeping warm as toast with a really retro nanna HOT WATER BOTTLE. Makes the bed really warm to get in to and stays warm the whole night – best part is it costs virtually nothing, which is a huge bonus now electricity is so expensive, and its environmentally friendly (the cool water goes on the plants the next day).
After being so virtuous I’m more than ready for some sin with a honeycomb Blackbird Hot Chocolate! Plus you get a bonus spoon, right.
Where are these stocked in Sydney? Confectionary stores, delis, gourmet greengrocers?

  • 125. Vanessa | July 15th, 2012 at 8:31 am | #

“Hey Louise B – I found that I was my warmest when I was pregnant, lovely for my first born in July but not my second born early Feb”

As to staying warm this winter, I have to admit that this is my laziest one, I am still volunteering 3days a week but at home I am curling up under a fluffy blanket reading and it is wonderful. I only have my heater on in the mornings to take the chill off for the day.

Bed socks! I love Bed Socks. Got ‘em in all colours! Great when climbing into a cold bed at night, and toasty through the day when worn with my comfortable Moccasins! Not a fashion statement, I guess, but very comfy! I also love my faux fur doona comforter, my animal print mink blanket snuggled over me on the couch, my wood-fire heater, my hot-body of a Hubby and my four gorgeous, cuddly kids! In danger of sounding very cheesy, they warm my heart most of all…! We could all do with hand-warming mugs of steaming hot chocolate, though!

Chocolate stirrers are fantastic – I made flavoured ones in the shape of hearts for presents for a baby shower and everybody loved them, they really make great little gifts.

Chai, chai and more chai is keeping me warm! It’s the perfect winter drink because not only is it a warm drink but all the lovely spices in it instantly warm me as soon as I get a whiff of them…so delicious.

We’ve got the gas heater going and I’m opting to cook using the oven so we get the benefit of its heat too. Just last night I made hot chocolates for dessert – but it wasn’t anything like the Blackbird spoons, just your standard powdered version – how yummy would these be. Also Lorraine, I must “thank” you for putting me onto the Sea Salt Lindt – seriously addictive.

My husband has a sure-fire cure for the cold – he is in vegas on a bucks party! So while I’m hearing stories of nightclubs, pool parties and buffets, our 18 month son and I are huddled beneath blankets sitting inches in front of the heater! Brash – the baby – had his first baby-chino over the weekend. I think that would be his answer for the cold!

I’m a huge fan of the good, old fashioned rubber hot water bottle in winter! I have a pink one with a gorgeous, soft, fluffy pink cover, it keeps me warm while watching TV and all through the night in bed so I don’t need the air conditioner or electric blanket on so I suppose that’s very ‘green’! A hot water bottle can last for hours so I think it’s a very efficient, personal heating system and the perfect thing to cuddle as I’m downing a smooth, luxurious hot chocolate! ;-)
