Win 1 of 4 Copies of Poh’s Kitchen!

Happy New Year my lovely readers! I hope that your had a wonderful break and got lots of rest, reading, cooking and relaxing done. Allow me to contribute to your cookbook collection. For the first giveaway this year I thought I’d make it a cookbook! I already ended up making two dishes from Poh’s Kitchen in quick succession as they were the right mix of wow and quirky. I made the egg and parmesan chive soldiers which Mr NQN has now repeatedly requested and the attention grabbing “Fettuccine” Crepes Suzette.

egg soldiers

There’s a whole bunch of delicious recipes in here (more than 80 at last count) and many with full page colour pictures (you know I like my food porn ;) ) and canvasses food from different cultures in a range of styles. There’s of course Asian food but then there’s also beetroot borscht with pirozhki, steamed Moroccan snapper, paella and chicken curry with roti chanai which really reflects the way that we eat food from different cultures nowadays. There’s even a boast of the best banana cake in the world-now that’s a challenge!

I love Poh honestly. So disappointed when she lost in Series one. Always enjoy seeing her cooking and I have her apps in my iphone:))

  • 3. Bubble and Sweet | January 8th, 2011 at 6:53 am | #

I have to admit I don’t really watch Masterchef, but I did see a couple of the first season and I thought Poh was really sweet.

  • 4. laura | January 8th, 2011 at 7:03 am | #

It would have to be Marion – not only amazing and refreshing cooking style, but also a beautiful person who did not presume too much and obviously wasn’t doing Masterchef for fame. good for her.
Loved Poh too though – her hilarious laughter

  • 5. Felicity | January 8th, 2011 at 7:06 am | #

I loved any of the MCs who showed personality and passion and Poh did both.

I loved Poh. She showed creativity, passion and love for her culture. So beautiful too.

  • 9. Cate | January 8th, 2011 at 8:46 am | #

Last season had quiet an array of characters. I loved Alvin’s flamboyance, but also liked the way Adam kept to himself, and quietly achieved (perhaps the dark horse in some respects!)

  • 10. Caryl | January 8th, 2011 at 9:07 am | #

Like most of Australia..Marion in series 2 because of her pure joy for cooking.

  • 11. Mary Preston | January 8th, 2011 at 9:09 am | #

I thoroughly enjoyed watching CALLUM bumble his way around the kitchen with the occasional stroke of food genius. He never gave up & hopefully learned by his mistakes. I certainly learned by his mistakes.

Poh because she brings the best of both modern and traditional elements together!

  • 13. Brett | January 8th, 2011 at 9:15 am | #

Poh was my favorite for two reasons because she was from Adelaide and she is an artist Being able to shop at the Adelaide Central Markets and also being creative – always a good combination with food.

  • 14. belinda | January 8th, 2011 at 9:18 am | #

my fav was Jack from Junior Masterchef, so keen to attempt anything and experiment with everything…what a legacy all thses cooing shows have…here’s hoping that they aren’t just having couch potatoes watching good food, but getting people to the kitchen cooking and eating GREAT food!

  • 15. Nomsie | January 8th, 2011 at 9:20 am | #

Would you believe that my fav contestant was Poh! I was looking at her book in DJ’s the other day and wondering “would my husband kill me for bringing home yet ANOTHER cookbook” and i reluctantly put it back on the shelf :(
I adored her because I LOVED what she cooked! I’m a big fan of asian cuisine and it made me want to travel more so I can experience what the locals eat, not just the westernized food we get here. She’d so often make something that her mum taught her, had my mouth watering! Also she’s just to cute and sweet looking with that huge smile, you just warm to her straight away… i thought she should have won, but i’m glad she got her own show :)

  • 16. phil | January 8th, 2011 at 9:21 am | #

poh ling yeow because did great simple dishes and was humble in defeat

  • 17. Lyn | January 8th, 2011 at 9:21 am | #

How do you choose! I’ve loved all of them; watch Poh on TV and follow others on the web… Was blown-away by the children on Masterchef – would love to be able to cook now like they are doing at under-thirteen years.
It is exciting to see the chefs of the future.

  • 18. Megan | January 8th, 2011 at 9:23 am | #

My favourite contestant was little Lucy on Junior Masterchef, she has the sweetest personality and is an awesome cook!

  • 19. Caz | January 8th, 2011 at 9:30 am | #

ooh Poh was a huge favourite of mine in the 1st season, but overall I think Marion from S2 is my fav.

  • 20. Amanda | January 8th, 2011 at 9:31 am | #

This book is on my shopping list for next time I’m near a book shop.
Favorite MC contestant – too hard. I like all the people who smiled a lot, cried not much, and stuck into the job without whinging. Po would have to be close to the top of that list. I stopped everything (much the same as for MC) to be in front of the telly when her show is on.

  • 21. Jacqui Lagaluga | January 8th, 2011 at 9:33 am | #

Poh is my all time favourite. Her engaging ,no fuss personality and skilled culinary artistry endeared her to both myself and my darling grand daughters Grace and Alexandra. Inspired by Poh the girls played Masterchef at home , wanted to be more involved in cooking and they still “pass judgement” on my cooking efforts just like the judges from Masterchef LOL!

  • 22. Christine | January 8th, 2011 at 9:43 am | #

My favourite is Isobella, I am 13 yrs old and tried out for Junior Masterchef! I am going to make her ricotta gnocchi for my family tonight. I loved Poh in the adult series, her laugh makes me laugh! Ella

  • 23. Clara | January 8th, 2011 at 9:44 am | #

Poh of course! Her creativity was such an inspiration!

  • 24. Michelle | January 8th, 2011 at 10:02 am | #

Isabella and Sophia from Junior Master Chef – everything they made just looked devine. I seriously want to adopt those girls.

  • 25. Debbie | January 8th, 2011 at 10:03 am | #

I loved Justine! She was always happy and had such a love of cooking. It is great to see her doing so well now with her feature in TV Week.

  • 26. jl | January 8th, 2011 at 10:05 am | #

MY girls soooo love Poh’s kitchen and masterchef has given them a love for cooking…needless to say we love Poh- funny and original and also Adam for his innovation and gaining so much confidence at the end of it all!

  • 27. Vintage Macaroon | January 8th, 2011 at 10:05 am | #

I managed to catch the beginning few episodes of the first Masterchef series when I was in Australia. I know your giving away Poh’s book but she was actually the one I remember the most. Her big smile and her food was always interesting. I have been catching up on her TV series now I’m here and it’s great! She should be very proud. She makes some challenging dishes to rival the other guest chefs, and makes me want to try them too. Can I please have one of her books so I can have a go at recreating her interesting dishes. Thanks.

  • 28. Jo | January 8th, 2011 at 10:08 am | #

Male chefs present as masters of the art, with perfected chopping skills and displaying their intellect by telling us why foods do what they do; but women just demonstrate the fun and joy of cooking. We have been blessed with these wonderful women for years, now it is Poh’s turn, to add colour and magic to our kitchens. Thanks girls; keep it up Australia.

  • 29. colleen | January 8th, 2011 at 10:10 am | #

I’m not a huge MC follower, but love Poh’s tv show, her enthusiasm and guests, etc. I love that there is room for all sorts of cooks in Australia, like Julie, Poh, etc. We can pick and choose from such a wide variety of talent. Thanks for your fabbo contributions too, NQN. Happy happy 2011.

  • 30. Kelly | January 8th, 2011 at 10:12 am | #

Have to say Marion love love love her……

  • 32. InTolerant Chef | January 8th, 2011 at 10:12 am | #

I quite liked Alvin because he liked to think outside the box. He knew how to combine cultures and ingredients in a fearless way.

  • 33. Elaine | January 8th, 2011 at 10:15 am | #

Chris is my favourite – love his attitude and sense of humour – remember when he took a bottle of beer out of the pantry to drink rather than cook with it? Masterchef needs more characters like him!

  • 34. Tracey Herbert | January 8th, 2011 at 10:22 am | #

I think Marion was my favourite. She has such a sparkle about her and i was so sad when she missed out! I was looking at this book, and after receiveing a box of old cookbooks from my great Aunt who sadly had to go into a home over christmas I didn’t want to add to the massive pile sitting there waiting to find a home in my buldging shelves! So would love to have a copy to sneak in there (hubby won’t see one more surely!?)

  • 35. LisaD | January 8th, 2011 at 10:32 am | #

My favourite at the time was Marion. The blending of her mothers influence and modern innovation was wonderful.

I have grown to like Poh a great deal since her show started and we adore Nonya food.

  • 36. Miki Brotzler | January 8th, 2011 at 10:44 am | #

Poh, as it’s so good to see a non-anglo person make it “up in lights”!! And she’s a great cook and lovely person too.

  • 37. Cathy | January 8th, 2011 at 10:48 am | #

Isabella from Juniour masterchef because she inspiried my daughter and now she loves to cook and my daughter is inspiring me to climb out of my kitchen rut and be more creative in the kitchen.

  • 38. JasmyneTea | January 8th, 2011 at 10:52 am | #

Chris! He made me lol with his ridiculous facial hair and trilby hat :) And then I grew to love his style of cooking, because it kind of reminded me of how my dad is always trying to justify the addition of beer to his cooking (but you don’t need beer to make banana cake Dad!).

  • 39. Theresa | January 8th, 2011 at 10:55 am | #

My favourite Masterchef contestant is Alvin. Shy and kind and he had a way with food that cannot be denied. My second favourite was Poh for the crazy way she would just try crazy stuff she wasn’t even sure would work and her artistic flair with ingredients.

  • 40. Libby | January 8th, 2011 at 10:56 am | #

Poh. I mean, she’s the only contestant I still follow post-series (i.e. by watching her TV show etc) so that tells you something, doesn’t it?

  • 41. Anna Johnston | January 8th, 2011 at 10:57 am | #

Poh, we are all Poh fans here at HG headquarters. Her fun, easy going attitude, no fuss mentality wins it hands down for us.

I gotta say… those soldiers with soft boiled eggs look to die for, I’ve put a request in for one of my birthday meals to include this little gem, thanks for sharing lovely! :0)

PS: Would love to know why you accidentally head-butted Mr NQN in excitement one morning?

  • 42. Sarah | January 8th, 2011 at 10:59 am | #

I liked Julie, she gave the ‘love of a mother’ feel to her dishes. But my bf is obsessed with Poh, she always gets preference when her show is on tv, he’s even downloaded her iphone ap :)

  • 43. jess @ fushmush | January 8th, 2011 at 11:01 am | #

Am I allowed to admit that I didn’t actually watch Masterchef (sacrilege!). But I do watch and love Poh’s Kitchen. I love Poh she is so down to earth and not afraid to do things a little differently. I also love Emmanuel and his accent. My husband often repeat stuff his says trying to emmulate his accent. Hillarious.

  • 44. milkteaxx | January 8th, 2011 at 11:28 am | #

i love adam hands down because of all the thins he gave up to come to masterchef and all the dedication he puts into his food.

  • 45. Cherri | January 8th, 2011 at 11:35 am | #

I actually always loved Poh’s work in the MC series. Her presentation was what won me over and I often wished I could actually “taste” what she had prepared because her dishes “looked” so magnificent. She was innovative in the way she cooked and put things together and from that point alone, I think she deserved to win. I very happy to see that she has gone to be such a success.

  • 46. avid reader | January 8th, 2011 at 11:37 am | #

I cannot remember the contestants on masterchef.

  • 47. Hannah | January 8th, 2011 at 11:41 am | #

Oooh, that’s hard. I’ll be lame and say Callum because he was such a cutie. Or Adam, because he was also a cutie. :P

  • 48. Carolyn Jung | January 8th, 2011 at 11:46 am | #

How come the eggs I buy in the supermarket don’t come with cute expressions like that?! LOL

  • 49. Kaz | January 8th, 2011 at 11:50 am | #

Poh and Marion were such standouts; hard to beat their talent, humour and resilience. They appeared, in such a stage managed show, to have real talent, and deserve their success.

  • 50. Chris | January 8th, 2011 at 11:55 am | #

Chris. Not because of the whole namesake thing but I respected the way he was prepared to work with offal and pigs heads on TV–unafraid of confroting judges and viewers.

  • 51. Jay | January 8th, 2011 at 11:56 am | #

I watch Poh’s shows but 4get 2 write the receipts down.

  • 52. Christine | January 8th, 2011 at 12:07 pm | #

Poh was such a refreshing person to watch. She has passion, beauty and a wicked sense of humor. The way she plated things showed her creativity.

  • 53. Violet | January 8th, 2011 at 12:12 pm | #

My favourites were Poh, Adam & Alvin. I love
    Poh’s – vibrant personality, humour & laughs
Adam’s – sincerity & ‘down to earth’ nature
Alvin – lovely smile & genuine friendship towards other contestants

Best of all, they were all creative and inspirational. Best wishes to all & may their wishes come true!!

  • 54. Chris Collins | January 8th, 2011 at 12:26 pm | #

Poh Ling Yeow is definitely my favourite. I love her exuberant energy and bubbly personality. She’s a breath of fresh air to Australian television and cooking shows. Her presence on Masterchef series one brought so much joy to my family’s viewing pleasure we stuck by her throughout the show. I especially love her take on her family’s Malaysian and Nyonya traditional cuisines, like petai with sambal and fish custard, or her glutenous rice dumpling with coconut pandan leaf, or that age old traditional (and very risky choice) ‘Century Egg’ congee. The look on the judges’ faces when they tasted her century egg dish was priceless, sending my family into fits of laughter. Most importantly, I love the way Poh served her dishes with an artistic edge, and peppered her unique cooking style with her quirky sense of humor. Her ‘never say die’ attitude (when she re-attempted that infamous Fried Meringue dessert and finally succeeded in getting the judges’ seal of approval) deserved lots of kudos. Even when she was at her most trying of days (remember that Croquembouche pressure test challenge), she was always gracious throughout the show and even managed to put on a smile.

I’ve been an avid fan of ‘Poh’s Kitchen’ on ABC (never missed an episode). Poh’s fusion style of cooking, East meets West, Traditional meets Modern cuisines, is a pleasure to watch, and opens my eyes to her very interesting (and very exotic) food journey from Australia to Malaysia week after week. It would be a joy to own a copy of her cookbook, so I can get Poh’s priceless signature when I get the chance to meet her one day.

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • 55. Claire K Creations | January 8th, 2011 at 12:26 pm | #

My favourite Masterchef contestant was Sienna from Junior Masterchef. She was so cute not to mention talented way beyond her 9 years!

  • 56. lisa | January 8th, 2011 at 12:27 pm | #

Having lived in Malaysia for some time, I really enjoyed Poh’s interpretation and adaptations in the Masterchef cooking competition. However, being a mother with a hungry family, just like Julie’s, I also appreciated Julie’s slant on her cooking style. Thus it is very difficult for me to differentiate between Poh’s and Julie’s techniques and styles of cooking and recipes . I will therefore have to put both Julie and Poh as my favourites.

  • 57. Eileen | January 8th, 2011 at 12:36 pm | #

So hard to choose – Marion would by my first choice! I was lucky enough to have known Marion as a child, so it was such a pleasure seeing her achievements on the show. The two that got me up cooking and feeling passionate about food were Matt and Callum – I regularly check their food blogs for new recipes to add to my repertoire. Thanks for having such a stand out food blog Lorraine – yours was the first one I ever saw, and still check in regularly. Your potato bread, the one with the whole potatoes in it, plus the mash is a favourite in our household. My husband loves it, and so does my mum…yum! Eileen x

  • 58. Julz | January 8th, 2011 at 12:42 pm | #

Marion Grasby was my favourite! She had some really innovative ideas and great fusion flavours, which I think is what is getting more and more chefs recognised in the industry. I was so disappointed when she lost out on the satay sauce! :(

  • 59. Samantha | January 8th, 2011 at 12:47 pm | #

There are so many good contestants in both seasons but I have to say Marion is my favourite. She made some of the best dishes in the show, won so many challenges but yet she is so humble about her achievements.

  • 60. Mark @ Cafe Campana | January 8th, 2011 at 12:48 pm | #

Who doesn’t love some good food porn. I love Poh’s kitchen both the show and her actual kitchen in the show. She has a crazy wok induction cooker. How cool! The episode at Neil Perry’s house was cool too. He has a view of the harbour to die for.

  • 61. Akika | January 8th, 2011 at 12:51 pm | #

My favourite is Jonathan, surprise! I know a lot of people didn’t like him because he didn’t seem like a team player at times but I really admired his motivation and determination to win, especially during the elimination rounds :D I was SO impressed with his egg beating during one of the earlier eliminations..was seriously faster than an electric beater! And even though he makes silly mistakes, his talent really does shine through a lot of the time as well. :) support!

  • 62. Athena | January 8th, 2011 at 12:57 pm | #

Definitely Poh, not only did she go on a cooking journey she also rediscovered the importance of her own culture, when it came to sharing food and family stories. And I loved sharing that journey with her!

  • 63. kiska | January 8th, 2011 at 1:18 pm | #

happy new year, Lorraine! and thank you for giving us a chance again to win something really good… Without a doubt, I loved Marion most – she is beautiful, has a magic touch in anything she sets out to do, and such amazing intuition for flavours…

  • 64. EHA | January 8th, 2011 at 1:35 pm | #

I am going to look like the most unoriginal copycat ever, but I DID watch almost every night of Masterchef and Poh Ling Yeow stood out from the beginning. Daring, original, fun and THAT smile! Now just try and get me away from watching ‘Poh’s Kitchen’! I love her fusion cooking, so suitable for our way of life and availability of ingredients; I love her joy of and in food, which she so correctly equates to culture; I love the fact that no two shows of hers are ever alike and her ability to have turned her talent in visual art into the culinary art with which she always leaves us on a high!

  • 65. Karen | January 8th, 2011 at 1:43 pm | #

Difficult to choose just one, but I’ll go the junior masterchef route and choose Siena. She was awesome, and I loved the way at 9 years old, she was so encouraging to her team mates.

  • 66. Alvin | January 8th, 2011 at 1:44 pm | #

My favourite at the time is SKYE!!! She is so talented, I love her Food presentation, so sad she didnt win the Masterchef

  • 67. moya | January 8th, 2011 at 1:46 pm | #

Alvin from season 2, such a great character and so honest about his food!

  • 68. KayKitchenWitch | January 8th, 2011 at 1:52 pm | #

It’s a close call between Marion & Callum. Marion for her irrepressible, infectious passion and Callum for his enthusiasm and embracing of trying anything even when he didn’t have a clue.

  • 69. Jackie | January 8th, 2011 at 2:07 pm | #

Poh, hands down! She always expressed such a sense of joy and you always got the feeling that she loved it all, even when she stuffed up!

  • 70. Charmaine | January 8th, 2011 at 2:12 pm | #

My favourite Masterchef was Julie Goodwin. I learned to cook from AWW’s and Margaret Fulton’s cookbooks when I first arrived in Oz was a young 17 y.o. to study Year 11 in the country. Love to add Poh’s Kitchen to my collection.

  • 71. RedDoll | January 8th, 2011 at 2:47 pm | #

I loved Marion, she made the fancy stuff look so easy!!

  • 72. Lydia | January 8th, 2011 at 2:55 pm | #

I loved Chris because I feel its disrespectful to waste food/ throw away food and he brought an awareness to the issue of ‘using the whole beast’. I’ve noticed cuts like beef cheeks at the butchers and I think Chris contributed to this. Love your site x

  • 73. Wendy | January 8th, 2011 at 2:58 pm | #

It is so hard to pick just one…but if pressed, I would choose Alvin He is talented yet very humble.

  • 74. Maria | January 8th, 2011 at 2:58 pm | #

Has to be Poh. She was such a fun contestant who was not only the friendliest of people but loved her cooking so much is showed on her face evertime

  • 75. GourmetGetaways | January 8th, 2011 at 3:12 pm | #

From the first season I like Chris (the beer guy) and the second season I like Alvin best. I also like Poh and I am really pleased she has managed to suceed with out the title of MasterChef

  • 76. Judy | January 8th, 2011 at 3:45 pm | #

i loved poh and alvin. i think they were both great characters to watch, and they showed australia some yummy asian dishes.

  • 77. Chanel | January 8th, 2011 at 4:03 pm | #

Chris was my favourite. I loved his nose-to-tail philosophy, as well as his cooking with beer. I thought he was very talented and inspiring!

  • 78. Hannah | January 8th, 2011 at 4:05 pm | #

i would have to say alvin! he always made such interesting things. i have cooked a few recipes from is cinnamonpig website and they have been great!

  • 79. Glenda | January 8th, 2011 at 4:09 pm | #

OOh that’s a hard one. I liked Julie, loved Poh especially her risk-taking, admired Justine, was mightly impressed by Marion and thoroughly entertained by Alvin. Lucy won my heart in Junior Masterchef. As you can tell, I am a Masterchef addict. I have thoroughly enjoyed Poh’s cooking show on the ABC and would love to have her book.

I am also delighted to have discovered your food blog only a few short months ago. (very upset it took so long).

Happy New Year Lorraine and I look forward to reading more in 2011.

  • 80. Annie | January 8th, 2011 at 4:37 pm | #

I loved Poh in the first series, she was quirky, creative and her big smiles made you smile as well! In the second series i thought Adam was amazing! i wish i was able to taste his foods!

  • 81. Cheryle | January 8th, 2011 at 4:38 pm | #

My soft spot was for the first winner, Julie Goodwin whom was always flustered but determined in each callenge. She has a special quality and persona.

  • 82. Sally | January 8th, 2011 at 4:55 pm | #

Marion was my absolute favourite. Her cooking was by far the best and I though it was a travesty that she didn’t win. She was sweet, creative and honest and I thought that really showed in her dishes.

  • 83. Riss | January 8th, 2011 at 4:57 pm | #

Matt entered with a tendency towards desserts, left curious towards the wider world of food and has now emerged as a budding grasshopper in Chinese cookery. His transformation gives me courage to tackle new and difficult arenas in the kitchen.

  • 84. Karen | January 8th, 2011 at 5:08 pm | #

Marion and Poh for sure. I wanted my brother to marry Poh but, alas, he has gone in another direction. So much for Poh as my sister-in-law. Boooo!

I also had a soft spot for Aaron in season 2 with his wry observations, genuine enthusiasm and humility, and ability to drive the other contestants mad.

  • 85. AnnieC | January 8th, 2011 at 5:15 pm | #

I love Alvin not only on his cooking but also his quirky comments. I am also proud to see an Asian do so well in the media who typically shy away from this medium. I bumped into him & his partner at Myer during the xmas sales & he is just as lovely in person.

  • 86. Tess Uncle | January 8th, 2011 at 5:16 pm | #

I really liked Callum. I thought out of all of the contestants, he was the one who seemed to learn the most and really embrace a chance to get in the kitchen and learn the basics, rather than angling for a book deal without any real hard yakka experience.

I hope I don’t find out he has gone back to studying engineering!

Pierre from junior masterchef is my favourite because he is just too cool for a kid his age

  • 88. Yen | January 8th, 2011 at 5:40 pm | #

Poh is definitely my favourite MasterChef-er ever, followed closely by Adam and Alvin! I’ve seen every episode of Poh’s Kitchen, which I think is such a great show :)

  • 89. Ang W | January 8th, 2011 at 5:41 pm | #

Marion was a great contestant who learned heaps and grew as a chef on the show and managed to beat a celebrity chef! I also loved her attitude and enthusiasm towards cooking.

  • 90. Lisa Hong | January 8th, 2011 at 5:42 pm | #

My favourite Masterchef contestant was Marion because she was creative in her cooking, excelled under pressure and had a fun-loving attitude about her which inspired me to find to joy and passion in my own cooking.

  • 91. Anna | January 8th, 2011 at 5:43 pm | #

oh my, that Nonya Chicken curry, looks superb!
do you know that I loved Clare the best! She was strong and creative and emotional, and she really affected me, I got excited watching her come through stuff! thank you, and happy new year!

  • 92. Maria T | January 8th, 2011 at 5:49 pm | #

Definitely Poh. She was fierce, motivated and creative. And her lovely nature and passion for food got her a tv show and now a book!

  • 93. Erin@foodmentalist | January 8th, 2011 at 6:18 pm | #

I loved Philip Vakos from series 2 because he was just SO nice :) This cookbook sounds amazing !

  • 94. Natalia | January 8th, 2011 at 6:26 pm | #

I admired Poh and Justine and can’t choose between two of them.
Marion was a great contestant but Callum is my favourite for his ability to learn.
I hope he will grow to a Grand Chef!

  • 95. Sally | January 8th, 2011 at 6:37 pm | #

Julie, she is so natural and she cooks good everyday food! Really like Poh as well, always watch her show!

  • 96. MissJane | January 8th, 2011 at 6:48 pm | #

Can honestly say That I havn’t had a favourite contestant in any of the competions. However I love “Poh’s show” on the ABC. Her easy style and honesty have made me a big fan of not only her dishes but she herself. I think she is an absolute Star!

  • 97. Brittany | January 8th, 2011 at 6:56 pm | #

I’ve been eyeing of Poh’s cookbook for a while now! It looks really good, and sure sounds like you’ve had fun with it!

As for my favourite Masterchef contestant, I really liked Callum Hann. He was very humble despite his skills. The episode where he cooked the pies (but they cracked, poor thing) it should what a real chef/cook would do; pick themselves up and try their best. Definitely someone young to look up to!

Anyway, thanks for doing this! I like reading everyone elses Masterchef too :)

  • 98. Brittany | January 8th, 2011 at 6:57 pm | #

Ps. I would choose Poh too? She’s incredibly talented and I love her taste in food…

  • 99. Stephanie | January 8th, 2011 at 7:00 pm | #

I loved Adam because he was graceful under pressure and his food looked yummy every time!

  • 100. Ms Fifikins | January 8th, 2011 at 7:10 pm | #

One of the things I love about Masterchef is how likeable most of the chefs are.

As for favourites, I love Fiona from series 2, not because she is a Fiona, but because she was able to use the experience to meld her past with her future. She is now using her love of food and teaching to help kids learn that cooking is fun.

  • 101. Mark | January 8th, 2011 at 7:42 pm | #

Totally Poh. I loved that she took risks, and tried things she had never made before like the black rice cubes. Her passion for food was always evident and you never felt she was in a competition, but just enjoying having a crack at making something beautiful to eat but with artistic flair. She made me want to eat Malay cuisine every day.

  • 102. sally | January 8th, 2011 at 7:56 pm | #

Justine was my favourite. She always seemed genuinely pleased when others did well, had an easy going nature but competitive at the same time.

  • 103. Amanda | January 8th, 2011 at 8:04 pm | #

I love Jack…That little man can cook… He gave his all….
His dishes said “Not really sure but this is me”.
I will eat at Jacks Place when the time comes…….

  • 104. Sarah White | January 8th, 2011 at 8:23 pm | #

Alvin is my all time favourite!

  • 105. Veronica | January 8th, 2011 at 8:33 pm | #

I loved Alvin – he was so entertaining! His dishes had me drooling and wishing that I had smell-a-vision!

  • 106. Jess | January 8th, 2011 at 8:53 pm | #

Junior masterchef -Cassidy. She was fantastic. I remember in one of the first episodes she created a dish and after plating it up and before taking it to the judges- she mentioned how good it ‘should be’ and that she hoped there’d be some left for her. She was so excited. Since then I’ve been hooked. She was great.

  • 107. Judith | January 8th, 2011 at 9:16 pm | #

Jack in Junior Masterchef was my favourite. For a 12 year old to tackle his own version of Heston’s snail porridge – and pull it off – demonstrates his underlying golden talent. Post Masterchef, I really like Poh and her show. The other week I was watching ‘Hey Hey It’s Ester Blueburger’ on TV and who was playing the shoe salesperson? It was Poh, I’m sure! Her acting experience shines through in her cooking show. She’s very polished and professional. I’d love to win her book.

  • 108. Jody J | January 8th, 2011 at 9:23 pm | #

Jack was may favourite. For a boy of his age to not be afraid to show his love of cooking was amazing. At that age for a boy to choose this path rather than sports or gaming as a passion is very brave and admirable. Kids are getting more open to embracing different hobbies, but some can still be so cruel and bullying. Bravo Jack!

  • 109. Ruth Cayzer | January 8th, 2011 at 9:29 pm | #

I am a mother of three young ones, two of which are boys and I would have to say Jack from junior m/c.He reminds me of someone with a big heart, passion for food, desire to learn, ability to accept challenges head on and plate amazing dishes and still be smiling at the end of all this!
What a role model for our young boys!!( and no I am not Jack’s mother!)

  • 110. Sapphira Toh | January 8th, 2011 at 9:33 pm | #

I really enjoyed watching Alvin from the last season of Masterchef as he was a very cheerful character who managed to infuse a lot of traditional Malaysian-Chinese flavours into his cooking. As a Malaysian who lives in Australia, I felt like he was doing my home country proud by showcasing our cuisine. He also seemed to be a very diligent contestant who worked his hardest to put up great dishes and was never apologetic for his efforts. :) I do think very highly of the other contestants, such as Adam and Callum from last season as well as Poh from the first season, but Alvin was incredibly likeable; therefore, he was my favourite.

  • 111. maryann | January 8th, 2011 at 9:42 pm | #

I love that Poh has made the most of the opportunities that MasterChef has given her. So many of the contestants come and go and we never really hear of them again – but Poh is out there, sharing her creativity and having (what looks like!) a great time. Good on you Poh!
Of course, like most people, I liked Marion and Chris and Callum, but I REALLY like Poh for her initiative and gusto.

  • 112. jodie | January 8th, 2011 at 10:08 pm | #

My favourite is Alvin. I loved the things he cooked. When he cooked the pork belly dish toward the end, my partner and I just turned to each other and said “how much would you like to be eating that now?” But added to the food was his adorable personality and funny expressions. It made me wish he was my friend.

  • 113. Stefanie | January 8th, 2011 at 10:40 pm | #

I didn’t watch the first season of Masterchef so I can’t say Poh (although I have watched her on Poh’s Kitchen and think she is great on that). My favourite is Alvin, he has a infectious smile and always looks like he enjoys cooking which I think is one of the most important things, besides eating of course :)

  • 114. Emmaline | January 8th, 2011 at 11:09 pm | #

Definitely Alvin – his food just looked downright delicious, his personality was adorable and we loved how there was always a meaningful story behind every meal.

  • 115. Mel | January 8th, 2011 at 11:19 pm | #

We loved Adam from last season. Smooth operator ! Love poh too !

  • 116. Joanne | January 8th, 2011 at 11:26 pm | #

Poh, because i feel a connection with her because we both have Chinese-Malaysian heritage and influences in our cooking

  • 117. penny aka jeroxie | January 8th, 2011 at 11:56 pm | #

As much as I love Poh in season one, I love Adam from Season two as well. He is so clever in the way he cooks and thinks about food. Both of them definitely think outside the box and so creative in their flavours and presentation. However I do think that Poh surpasses him in plating but I think Adam brings more to the table with flavour. For me, I go with flavour. But I hope to win this book and have a go in the recipes to prove that Poh is just as good.
    Please and pretty please!

  • 118. sia | January 8th, 2011 at 11:58 pm | #

I admit that I haven’t yet embraced the masterchef phenomenon.. but I do appreciate how the programs influenced a renewed interest in the” home made” and market to table meals..a bit like what Jamie Oliver did for pasta machienes when he burst onto the scene.
Poh seems a very down to earth, passionate, well read foodie that I respect. Her book and recipies would be an asset to anyones food library collection. Good luck eveyone and welldone to whom ever wins.

  • 119. Lea @TheGraciousHost | January 9th, 2011 at 1:09 am | #

I have to admit I only watched the first season, and my favourite contestant was Poh. I loved the inventiveness of her cooking and her daring spirit, not sticking to the script but trying new flavours and styles outside of the expected. I enjoy her show too, and would love to try some of the recipes from her book!

    HI there :)

I’d say Alvin! He has such a great smile! lol and really likable and put in SUCH an effort into his food, but expects such mediocre critisizm when he’s actually good!

My favourite contestant is Pierre from junior masterchef is my because he is just too cool for a kid his age

  • 124. Pina Nania | January 9th, 2011 at 8:51 am | #

I loved Callum, it was great to watch his culinary skills and confidence grow in the competition. He was inspiring and he always had the right attitude. I think Poh has been one of the most successful Masterchefs. Her show is excellent and her passion for food and life is wonderful to watch.

  • 125. Phillip Cunningham | January 9th, 2011 at 9:38 am | #

Poh as she knew her way around the kitchen and with her unique style she presented sumptuous dish after sumptuous dish.

  • 126. nelleke | January 9th, 2011 at 9:44 am | #

I am a MC addict and its hard to chose a favourite but having to select one I would have to also say Marion because of her smile and her dishes were executed with grace.

  • 127. Carrie | January 9th, 2011 at 11:00 am | #

Alvin Quah is my favourite Masterchef contestant so far. Such an inspiring person to watch… I love the element of “story” to Alvin’s cooking.

  • 128. Elizabeth (ejay) | January 9th, 2011 at 12:41 pm | #

Poh is my favourite…what a gorgeous bubbly personality she has, she makes cooking look such fun…

  • 129. EHA | January 9th, 2011 at 1:03 pm | #

This blog should be printed as a book! What wonderful memories of both seasons of MC and the wonderful Junior MC! I absolutely adored ALL the last four contestants on the Junior version and am thrilled so many people are also remembering the wonderfully quirky Alvin, the gentlemanly Adam, the humility of Callum and the incredible talent of Marion. Still Poh does it for me as numero uno – would love to have her book already for one recipe: the steamed Moroccan snapper! I thought I was the only ‘funny one’ to steam the highly spiced Moroccan dishes – my lamb shanks rubbed with tagine mix come up trumps every time! Well, one can but dream!!

  • 130. Jenny Gross | January 9th, 2011 at 1:28 pm | #

OMG JACK !!! He attempted and even adapted a Heston recipe, what chutzpah, what creativity, what a success and at such a young age, amazing. I love all the show, the contestants, the losers and the winners and, of course, the chefs, YES CHEF!!, make up a winning recipe.

  • 131. Jacky | January 9th, 2011 at 1:53 pm | #

Claire – everyone disliked her but I thought she was so passionate about her food and her foodchange life she wants to create

  • 132. catherine wong | January 9th, 2011 at 1:55 pm | #

Masterchef Adam he deserve to be the masterchef, very focus, precise, creative and calm person. I love his cookings skill and humble personality.
    I enjoyed the masterchef 2010 very much…

I’m going to leave this prize for your other readers Lorraine, as I won the Italian Summer cookbook from you and received two more cookbooks for my birthday!
Looking forward to a great 2011 with you and your culinary adventures :-)

  • 134. Monica | January 9th, 2011 at 3:09 pm | #

Julie from, the first series i will say … love her determination and down to earth character ….. but Poh comes in a very close 2nd …. i love love her tv show … and she is such a natural when cooking with such famous chefs

  • 135. Liz | January 9th, 2011 at 3:47 pm | #

I’ve only ever seen one MC because we don’t have a tv!! That was a team challenge and I can’t remember anyone’s name. I’d still like to win the book!

  • 136. Min Ai | January 9th, 2011 at 4:00 pm | #

Poh was definitely my favourite from the first MC season. I love it how she let her personality shine through her food – a little bit wacky, artsy and sometimes just weird (which isn’t a bad thing!). Her true passion for Malaysian food from her heritage is inspirational to me coming from the same background. I absolutely adore Poh and am so proud of her achievements so far!

  • 137. Milo | January 9th, 2011 at 4:08 pm | #

Our family favourite was Callum because the kids thought his dishes looked yum. Plus he was the only one to come anywhere close to taming the V8 cake…

    Cheers!

  • 138. shemyla | January 9th, 2011 at 4:12 pm | #

My fav was Marion. She always came up with interesting food. She was always very positive and keen to help others

  • 139. Ophelia | January 9th, 2011 at 6:15 pm | #

To be honest? Sam from Junior Masterchef. I really loved those kids. They all put me to shame.

  • 140. Fiona | January 9th, 2011 at 6:41 pm | #

I do love poh, even though I was pissed they returned her into the show (unfair) and though I HATED julie, it was only fair she won ;)

  • 141. Trottie | January 9th, 2011 at 7:54 pm | #

I nominate “Isabella” I consider myself a reasonable cook at 77 years old but that lass was incredible. Her maturity was incredible and a delightful young lady.

  • 142. Alysha Tan | January 9th, 2011 at 8:10 pm | #

I loved Poh from the first season of masterchef! I was rooting for her all the while and i still believe that she should have won last season, no offence to Julie Goodwin or anything, i just think that Poh is a much better chef, she is barely -if ever- in the bottom 3 & i love how she is so spontaneous when it comes to cooking!

  • 143. Bobbie | January 9th, 2011 at 8:44 pm | #

Poh was my favourite from the beginning! She was so creative and I liked how she added a modern touch to asian flavours!

  • 144. Julie | January 9th, 2011 at 8:58 pm | #

I enjoyed watching Poh, thought she was original and creative in her cooking and was hoping see her win. I gave Poh’s book to my brother as a present.

  • 145. Jocelyn Santosa | January 9th, 2011 at 10:36 pm | #

My favourites were Isabella and Sophia, they mentioned opening up a restaurant together at 18 years old, I find their youth and enthusiasm refreshing – reminds me of when my I was young and my dad used to tell me I could do “anything I wanted”…

  • 146. Michelle | January 9th, 2011 at 10:43 pm | #

Poh – full in flavour, creativity and presentation, her meals were just as big a hit as her smile.

  • 147. Kym | January 9th, 2011 at 11:16 pm | #

One of my favourites was Marion, she cooks that good ole home style food that is simply finger licking good. Her approach is simple and to create yummy dishes that the whole family will love and be left saying I want more! She also likes to get her children involved in the cooking process which I love as when kids help out they are more likely to eat their creations! Plus she has a fantastic mix of the savory and the sweet!

  • 148. Faith | January 10th, 2011 at 3:36 am | #

Looks like a great book…great giveaway, Lorraine!

  • 149. Annette | January 10th, 2011 at 8:01 am | #

I’ve never watched MC but I did like Poh’s TV show.

  • 150. RedDoll | January 10th, 2011 at 8:12 am | #

I loved Chris and all the drama that surrounded him!

  • 151. Cakelaw | January 10th, 2011 at 8:31 am | #

My favourite so far has been Callum, because he kept going with a positive attitude, despite a number of setbacks (for which he was roundly thumped). Hopefully, when he is a little older, he will open his own restaurant.

  • 152. Laura | January 10th, 2011 at 8:36 am | #

I loved Callum. He was so awkward most of the time, but his food always had a way of working out and being inventive and tasty. For someone so young he was very talented.

  • 153. Bel | January 10th, 2011 at 8:38 am | #

I think Marion was just a sweet girl and she was my favorite. She was a fantastic competitor who put alot of effort in and made the challenges interesting.

  • 154. Evangeline | January 10th, 2011 at 8:45 am | #

I love Poh. I was born in Brunei and grew up loving the food of Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia, and Poh’s recipes makes it easy to access the foods I love so much.

  • 155. Petra | January 10th, 2011 at 8:48 am | #

Callum because he had such a great personality and did so well being the youngest!

  • 156. Lisette | January 10th, 2011 at 8:50 am | #

Oh I’m going to sound unoriginal but I do love Poh. She persevered, took risks and always looked for ways to be quirky and creative. I think she’ll do well in her career!

  • 157. Priscilla | January 10th, 2011 at 9:10 am | #

My favourite was Irmgard Kastner, one of the Top 50 contestants from Season 2. She may not have known the difference between lamb and pork, but she had some character (albeit grumpy at times) and gave the judges some lip which was good entertainment.

  • 158. Jenni | January 10th, 2011 at 9:21 am | #

I loved both Poh and Marion for the way they combined european and asian flavours, and also because both tried really inventive dishes, using unusual ingredients.

  • 159. Dianne Sylvester | January 10th, 2011 at 10:16 am | #

I’m only new to blogging (and reading yours!) I don’t want to win as a lovely friend of mine already gave me the book! Just wanted to let you know i made my first ever macaroons with Emmanual and Poh’s inspiration, and although it wasn’t perfect first go i was still very pleased :)

  • 160. EHA | January 10th, 2011 at 12:38 pm | #

Lorraine, am having HUGE fun at the moment catching up every morning with the still numerous and SO interesting blogs on this topic. Love the honesty of your bloggers I have not seen on other sites: so many have ‘confessed’ they know little of MC and are yet making valuable and interesting comments regarding what they do know. For me it is still Poh, Poh, Poh, of course for all the reasons I have enumerated. There is an extra one I hope to get ‘past the censor’: I have been kind’of fond of the opposite sex all my life and believe a little flirtation, conducted as sheer light fun, is one of the best spices in the cookery book? Well, Poh usually does work with the distaff side and I believe her to be one of the most delightful ‘flirts’ I have encountered! I am certain her show has that extra sunshine because of that fact?!

  • 161. Bri | January 10th, 2011 at 12:45 pm | #

    Definitely Philip Vakos:
    – he’s from Tassie
    – he’s rather easy on the eye!
    – his food was really appealing

Marion runs a close second, she was just so very likeable :)

  • 162. nev. threlfo | January 10th, 2011 at 1:14 pm | #

Wow, I have just literally pinched my wifessection, and it is great. Would you believe, that I her husband, who doesnt shop, went at xmas and bought her Pos kitchen, and a maggie beer dvd, , hid carefully in car, put into garage when I got home, so she couldnt find, and would you believe some miserable person raided our garage, and took that plus some tools.. Was not covered for ins. so will have to save up again, at 79 bit difficult., but I tell you what I am hooked on your web here. No wonder wife loves it so much.

  • 166. Marina Moschos | January 10th, 2011 at 3:54 pm | #

Julie – down to earth, bubbly and a gracious winner. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. Even though some challenges looked like they were going to get the better of her, she took everything in her stride and tackled them head on.

  • 167. Scilla | January 10th, 2011 at 4:47 pm | #

Julie – she’s just a plain mum from Qld! Goes to show that if you have a passion for something, it nevers hurts to try and you never know, you just might win!

  • 168. Adrian Xx | January 10th, 2011 at 5:25 pm | #

I actually think Poh is my favourite. She not only cooks, but is really talented in the arts as well. She’s had art exhibitions and is really skilled in the field of makeup as well, (Did my cousins wedding makeup before she was famous, was flawless and looked beautiful)I think those reasons are why she’s my favourite. (:

  • 171. jacqui | January 10th, 2011 at 7:58 pm | #

Marion was my favorite but followed a very close second by Poh. What a natural she is in front of the camera and very pretty too.I need to win her book though as i believe “I” make the best banana cake in the world , so definitely need to compare!

Alvin! He is so chilled! His drunken chicken soup absolutely thrilled!

  • 173. Ann | January 10th, 2011 at 8:52 pm | #

My fave from the first series was Justine because I loved her food. In the second series, it would be Callum because my daughter was infatuated by him and I thought he had great potential.

  • 174. Karla | January 10th, 2011 at 9:43 pm | #

Callum – infectious enthusiasm. Everybody was passionate, but he positively bubbled over with it.

  • 175. Vanda | January 10th, 2011 at 10:57 pm | #

Poh was always my favourite. I’m a huge fan of asian flavours and textures in cooking and Poh’s dishes always looked sensational. She’s a Masterchef winner in my eyes.

  • 176. shana | January 11th, 2011 at 10:14 am | #

I’m from Adelaide so this may seem bias but my favourite contestant is Poh Ling as no matter how tough the competition became she always managed to beam out her broad smile for all of us to see. Plus she’s makes cooking traditional Asian meals look so simple. Good on ya, Poh! Look forward in seeing you for season 2 of Poh’s Kitchen :)

  • 177. Susie B | January 11th, 2011 at 10:52 am | #

My favourite from season one would have to be Poh, her overbrimming enthusiasm for cooking was infectious, she is a delight, and her subsequent success is her reward. Her Eggs & Parmesan Chive Soldiers are enough to make me lust after this book!

  • 178. Susan | January 11th, 2011 at 11:28 am | #

Oh I love Poh! she would definitely be my favourite contestant out of all of them. She should have won, but I am glad she didn’t otherwise she would have been restricted in what she could have done.

  • 179. Sophie | January 11th, 2011 at 11:43 am | #

I loved Julie from season 1. Just because of the way she cooks, she reminds me of my mum, and the things she said, about how and why she cooks, just reminds me of my mum and how why my mum cooks. I was so happy when she won!

  • 180. mikey | January 11th, 2011 at 12:28 pm | #

Not really a Masterchef contestant, rather a Junior! I really think the show brought Jack out of himself – he would have to be my favorite contestant so far. Although I did also like Callum!

  • 184. Lisa | January 11th, 2011 at 7:55 pm | #

Poh is actually my favourite as she combines cooking with art. That wedding cake decoration was phenomenal.

  • 185. Skye | January 11th, 2011 at 9:53 pm | #

Hi, love the blog! Callum is my favourite as I admired his young, enthusiastic creativity and he’s got a great sweet tooth. I’d eat his desserts any day!

  • 186. Sally | January 12th, 2011 at 1:14 am | #

Callum in series two. He was so excited to win masterclasses and watched the experts with a very keen eye.

  • 187. rose dickson | January 12th, 2011 at 2:36 pm | #

i love Poh she has a great sense of humour and is alwasy happy however she is also the greatest cook

  • 188. Liz Pozniak | January 13th, 2011 at 4:26 pm | #

Adam, because he combined such intelligence with his creativity and also had the interesting cultural mix.

  • 189. Gemma | January 13th, 2011 at 5:18 pm | #

Honestly, I believe that Callum was the best Masterchef contestant. He may not have been the best cook in the show, not from the beginning, nor the end, BUT he showed the world (or at least Australia) what it means to be on Masterchef; to grow and gain new skills in cooking, cause isn’t that what the show’s about? Learning and improving, that’s what he showed us. Wow, I got pretty sentimental there.

  • 190. Lesley Ann Walker | January 13th, 2011 at 8:38 pm | #

Marion – she was down to earth, funny yet serious, a master at cooking while haing us all wanting to taste every meal she cooked

Definitely Marion! She was the most creative and innovative contestant with a fresh outlook to cooking whilst using humble ingredients.

  • 194. Amanda | January 14th, 2011 at 3:08 pm | #

Poh actually, as she was never afraid to try something a bit “out there”. I believe cooking is about experimentation and adapting to suit your results.

  • 195. Allison | January 14th, 2011 at 9:27 pm | #

Julie because she cooked real family meals that everyone could relate to. I love watching her spots on morning tv now – always something new and delicious to try!

  • 196. Sara | January 15th, 2011 at 9:46 am | #

I thought Poh was pretty cool actually…

Anybody who can make a fluoro green dessert look so appealing is alright in my books. Remember her pandan cake in the MC final, it was awesome.

  • 197. Elizabeth | January 15th, 2011 at 11:13 pm | #

Siena from the Junior series. She was so supportive to the other contestants and such a little sweetheart. And she made some AWESOME dishes.

    Poh.. Poh.. and Poh!

I love how she’s so creative with her cooking and it’s wonderful to have her showing traditional Malay cuisine.

  • 200. Patch | January 16th, 2011 at 12:07 pm | #

I liked watching Jack from Junior MC, he was funny to watch as he bumbled his way through the tasks yet achieved so much…

    Talent unearthed there.

  • 201. EHA | January 16th, 2011 at 1:36 pm | #

I have just read thru’ some 200 comments on MC! A loving journey back! Appreciating Poh as I do, I was as yet taken by the number of people who truly understood Callum, remembered Adam and SO appreciated the ‘kids’! I am sorry for all the possible viewers who ‘missed’ a perhaps ‘ho-hum’ show – just perchance you also missed some of the most delightful progressive food vibes during 2009-10!

  • 202. Rea | January 16th, 2011 at 9:44 pm | #

I adored Alvin – not only did I drool over his Caramelised Pork Belly (yum!), but he is so, so funny!
I still remember his response on the 7pm Project when he was asked about his inability to cook a decent steak:
“Yes, I’m not very good with big chunks of meat… unless they’re not on the plate” LOL

  • 203. Jo | January 17th, 2011 at 7:41 am | #

Marion; I think she proved herself to be a true Master Chef throughout the show.

  • 204. Suze McGinnes | January 17th, 2011 at 11:22 am | #

Poh, Marion and Alvin were my favourites. They seemed like lovely, friendly people and they cooked dishes that seemed tasty and innovative.

  • 205. rhiannon | January 17th, 2011 at 12:20 pm | #

My favourite contestant was Pierre from junior masterchef – he came across as so cool and laid back – way to cool for a kid his age!

  • 206. KImberlee | January 17th, 2011 at 9:08 pm | #

Isabella! She had heaps of passion for food and she is a twin just like my lil ones who are twins too! :)

  • 211. teenagefoodie | January 19th, 2011 at 4:54 pm | #

Adam because he was so persistent and just kept striving to do his best although he wasn’t winning challenges. Also when he did win challenges he was very modest and kept working his hardest.

  • 212. EHA | January 20th, 2011 at 12:35 pm | #

Hello ‘teenage foodie’ – am not teenage, but, like Adam, am persistent! Agree with you!

I doubt our beloved NQN has ever had as many responses to a column? Which means both she and MC etc are seriously touching base with the changing food habits/loves of the average Australian?! Have been interested to note how many ‘quiet’ names have appeared from the readership. I doubt this is so just to win a cookery book (Yes, please!)!!

Have I changed my mind because of what I have read? Sugar, NO! I’m even watching the current repeats of ‘Poh’s Kitchen’!!

  • 213. cheryl Beswick | January 20th, 2011 at 4:16 pm | #

Poh so loveable, happy.Wish i could cook like her

  • 214. Stephanie | January 21st, 2011 at 3:45 pm | #

My favourite Masterchef contestant so far,
Would have to be Marion, a choice which isn’t bizarre,
Not only did her Asian fusion cooking raise the bar,
ALL of her dishes were above par,
She can bake, saute, grill and char,
And for these reasons and more, I believe Marion to be the Masterchef star.

  • 215. Paul | January 21st, 2011 at 4:56 pm | #

Chris, because he used beer in cooking…. and yes he got Julie as well…. so no matter wat he is a winner…..

  • 216. Posie Patchwork | January 21st, 2011 at 11:37 pm | #

Just bought this book & blogged about it (again) it’s fantastic, i love her, everything Poh is incredible. Love Posie

  • 217. Helen | January 22nd, 2011 at 10:35 am | #

Our favourite, we loved to watch MasterChef as a family, was either Marion or Casey (Junior MasterChef)–
They were both so talented but also so irrepressibly positive!!

  • 218. angie | January 22nd, 2011 at 12:06 pm | #

It would be Poh for her great personality on screen and her ability to combine the best of both east and west to create good food at home!

  • 219. Lucy | January 22nd, 2011 at 3:11 pm | #

Poh! Even if the prize in question wasn’t related in anyway to Poh, my favourite contestant would still be Poh, for her charm, and great food!

  • 220. Jodie | January 22nd, 2011 at 3:22 pm | #

I just loved Jack from the Junior show, what a great kid! Stuck to his own style and wasn’t afraid to try something risky.

    Alvin because he was quirky!
    Loved the glasses!
    Great style of cooking too

  • 222. Traci Tritsaris | January 24th, 2011 at 10:22 am | #

Masterchef… what a fabulous entry into our TV world in the last 18 months, it has brought us baking addicts out of the closet! I sat riveted to my seat night after night. I loved best the friday night cooking classes as Gary & George have so much to offer in teh way of tips & tricks. However my fav contestant would have to be a tie between 2 series season 1 is Justine as her food was amazing and remained at such a high standard throughout the show, and along with Callum for season 2 as I just loved his efforts and passion, he strived every week to get up there and for his age he showed the Y Gen that hard work actually pays off. Live the Dream Callum! And thankyou masterchef for introducing us to some amazing chefs like Heston Blumental and Adriano Zumba as I didn’t know they were out there before the show!!!

  • 223. rhiannon | January 24th, 2011 at 11:18 am | #

  • 226. Kelly | January 26th, 2011 at 12:23 pm | #

Poh, there’s a reason she has done so well after Masterchef, it helps she’s a lovely lady, engaging, interesting, but mostly because she actually has something to say, teach, inspire in the world of cooking.

  • 227. EHA | January 26th, 2011 at 12:59 pm | #

Happy Australia Day to Lorraine (wherever the lady has had a chance to take a break!), Mr NQN, Poh, and all the 225 foodies who have had tremendous fun in expressing their opinions on this particular topic!!! It is not raining in the Southern Tablelands, from where I am penning this – I hope you all are able to throw your shrimp on the barbie and lift your tinnie or glass of lovely cold white vino to all of us and especially to NQN!!!

In view of our love for you, Poh, can’t you talk your publishers into letting some dozen copies ‘fall off the back of the truck’ in honour of this Australia Day! Just joking, but ?.

  • 241. Anne | January 29th, 2011 at 9:53 pm | #

Poh’s energy, excitement and joy of cooking a palpable! But I have to admit I have a real place in my heart for Isabella and Sophia as they were students at the school where I am a teacher aide. Long before they were known for their cooking they were known as remarkable students and wonderful young women. Watch out for younger brother Roman in the next series. And the dynasty lives on Rueben just started Prep and brought in a Masterchef apron for show and tell. However did a 4yr old keep the winner secret all that time. GO POH!

  • 242. Sally | January 29th, 2011 at 10:51 pm | #

Albeit a ‘junior’, Jack’s passion and slightly ham fisted cooking style had us all in his corner cheering him on as he slaved to prepare his wholesome creations. Cooking from the heart and often relying on gut feeling rather than knowledge, we can’t wait to see what he produces as he grows up.

Of the adult Masterchef contestants it had to be Poh for her energy, passion and because she was prepared to take a chance in presenting her ‘to die for’ food,

I hate to sit on the fence but I loved both Julie and Poh. I loved how they were such great friends as well as competitors. Bit of healthy competition is vital to bring the best out of someone.

My Nine year old daughter and i loved Poh, she just has that cheeky smile and creativity that instantly warms you, we have tried to cook many of her dishes the only one i refuse to try is the 100 year old egg one she did on masterchef, whilst i can eat almost anything this is something im not willing to try

Poh – Looked like she enjoyed what she was doing, very creative and definitely not mainstream and that 100 year old egg, how different was that?

They were all really entertaining in their own ways, be it in the kitchen or through their personalities.
I thought Justine was a great cook and had a very endearing personality.

    poh was our favourite.
She did not conform just to ‘fit in’.
did not cook beyond her heart because others did and thought it would help them win.
Was true to her culture and beliefs as well as being so totally creative and wonderful !
