Win 3 Fruit Boxes From Fruit At Work!

I made the mistake of watching Dr Oz’s show the other day. There I was thinking that I was pretty healthy and then he stated going on about the foods we should eat. I figured I would be safe as I love vegetables and broccoli and lettuce are my best friend. Then he mentioned the fruit that we should be eating and then I realised that I didn’t eat much fruit at all, unless it was in a pie or a pastry.

There’s no reason why I don’t eat much fruit. Well I do like my fruit more on the exotic side and super sweet and of course Winter fruit isn’t really either of those things. But I was lucky enough to get a sample box of  the fruit from Fruit at Work and I was curious to see what the selection was like. The fruit is all from the Flemington wholesale market which is where many restaurants get their produce. The website said that there would be a selection of “apples, bananas, peaches, nectarines, pears, oranges, kiwi fruit, mandarins, grapes and strawberries” although admittedly this did seem more of a Summer box than a Winter box and prices start at $24.95 including free delivery.

I got a slightly different selection with my $60 box which had a lot of fruit including 11 red delicious apples, 10 mandarins, 5 packham pears,  2 beurre bosc pears, 4 oranges, 4 granny smith apples, 4 oranges, 2 bananas (precious, like gold nowdays!) and 2 passionfruit and my favourite, a box of plump, huge cherries.

Thanks to Fruit At Work, one lucky Not Quite Nigella readers will three boxes of fruit for three weeks worth $180! Fruit at Work delivers to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. For Sydney it delivers within 50km of the CBD, and 20km within the CBD for VIC, SA, ACT & QLD and for WA only 10km so please ensure that your address is within these bounds. For a chance to win all you have to do is tell me your favourite fruit and why! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at midnight AEST 18th of September, 2011. You can enter this  competition once daily and it is open to anyone within Australia.XX

Best of luck!

Lots of love,

Lorraine

I love fruit and I think my favorite changes with the season. If I had to choose one it would be persimmon, I remember picking them off the tree with my father as a child.

My favourite fruit is a really good bowen mango. Do I need to give a reason. I think these are the beautiful, sweet, sensual, perfumed food on the face of the earth. I always thought I was way too exciting a person to eat fruit as ordinary as apples and oranges (joking).

  • 4. Annie | August 20th, 2011 at 6:40 am | #

My favourite fruit is persimmon which come in two varieties. Astringent or non astringent, you van have it crunchy like an apple, so sweet! Or when it’s all soft which you need a spoon to scoop out the gooey, soft sweet flesh. Yum!!!

    Hi NQN
I read your blog every morning but this is my first comment! It’s a wonderful blog and the only one I read. I love fruit! Pink lady apples are my favourite.

Mmmmm, love all sorts of fruit, but my favourite are cherries. They are my favourite colour (red), they are cute to look at, they make lovely earrings when you are fooling around, and they are sweet and smooth inside. Who could ask for more?

I love Jazz Apples! For me they are what an apple should be – crisp, cruncy, juicy, slightly tart but slightly sweet.

  • 8. Maria | August 20th, 2011 at 7:32 am | #

nothing better than an apple. perfect to eat on its own but also so many uses in cooking.. savoury (think sautéd apples with sage with pork schnitzel) and sweet (apple and cinnamon crumble – yum!)

Hi! My most favourite fruit in the world? The glorious durian! The soft, creamy flesh! The pungent aroma! Om nom nom nom! But I haven’t one currently. *is sad*

    But thanks for the competition!

what is my favourite fruit? well..that’s like asking which of my children is my favourite..like my children each fruit is special..apples at their best in autumn crunchy and juicy some sour some with a delicate perfume some only for cooking like the crab apple..when cooked some hold their shape and others fluff up or turn into a lovely sauce..and there’s apple juice dried apple apple cider apple jelly..cherries..those little jewels that often like company hanging in twos or threes on the tree appear around christmas to add extra magic to the festivities..and a big bowl sitting on the kitchen bench has a fleeting existence..popped into the mouth the pea like seed easily dispatched..heaven..pity to cook them but clafoutis beckons them sometimes..oh..and what about the morello cherry and glaced maraschino and dried cherries and cherry liqueur..and the same goes for each fruit..so i don’t have a favourite..jane

I love plump, juicy fresh berries – raspberries and blackberries in particular! Have so many glorious memories of picking these fresh in the uk, either eating them on their own by the handful, in pies or crumbles, or with delicious muesli, thick yoghurt and honey

  • 12. Stefanie | August 20th, 2011 at 8:57 am | #

Hi Lorraine, I love fruit especially the exotic ones however because of childhood memories one of my favorites is the loquat. As a child our neighbours had a tree and would pick the fruit for us and
I loved them, my Chinese parents would tell me that they were a “cooling” fruit so I could eat as much as I want:)

  • 13. Lou | August 20th, 2011 at 9:11 am | #

Yum! My favourite fruit would probably have to be a crisp, sweet apple. Yes, not overly exotic, but I love apples – they’re portable, filling and great in a crumble or a pie.

  • 14. Melody | August 20th, 2011 at 9:14 am | #

I, too, like you Nigella eat far too little fresh fruit throughout the year but when Christmas rolls around each year, nothing can stop me savouring the delights of big, red juicy cherries. Absolutely my favourite fruit and a delightful indulgence around the festive season.

  • 15. Ali | August 20th, 2011 at 9:17 am | #

Mangosteen! I will never forget the day my Vietnamese friend brought me a bag of mangosteen. The flavour was unlike anything I had ever tasted – sweet, refreshing, tangy, with the flesh similar in texture to a Lychee. They are expensive in Australia but every time I am lucky enough to be in South East Asia I indulge in my favourite fruit every day.

  • 16. Cathy | August 20th, 2011 at 9:18 am | #

Mango! What’s not to love? The soft sweet flesh, the delicious sticky juice and my favourite- sucking the seed til it’s dry! So many textured levels of joy!

Whoop i can enter the competition!!! I love bananas but I think that’s because I rarely see one nowadays!! Pretty big grape fan too but my ultimate is cherries. They are gorgeous!!

  • 18. Lauren | August 20th, 2011 at 9:31 am | #

My favourite fruit is the stoic apple. Any variety, any colour (except not red delicious!)

I love them because they are low in sugar and calories (only 60!), have a bit of fibre and if you pick the seasonal ones then they are crisp and full of flavour. I also love that each variety has a slightly different flavour so it’s a bit of a lucky dip each time.

I eat at least 2-3 apples a day!

  • 19. Amanda | August 20th, 2011 at 9:36 am | #

    I really love
Aussie Banana’s.I didn’t realise until the floods have given us a drought of them how much.I love them as a snack on sandwiches,on the Barbie,in muffins and cakes, dried as a nibbles, in shakes, asian style on a slice of bread covered with shrimp and pork mixture wrapped in bacon and deep fried (heaven). Vietnamese style green banana’s sliced fine with the skin on in salads, balinese banana pancakes,on sago pudding with coconut milk.BRING ON THE SEASONS CROPS.

  • 20. Rebecca | August 20th, 2011 at 9:38 am | #

Speaking of bananas, my sister made mini banoffee pies the other day for her son’s Christening, and everyone was so shocked when they found out because bananas were so expensive! Everyone kept asking, are you sure you want to put bananas on them – they’re quite expensive!’ But my favourite fruit would have to be cherries, because they always remind me of Christmas and getting together with the family, we always have them at our big family Christmas party (and they taste delicious too!)

My favourite is the cherry which is seasonal at Christmas Memories of Christmas arouse my senses when I eat this luscious sweet fruit, and throughout the year I look for plump cherries (even though now they come from America) I still buy them to remind me that Christmas is just around the corner, ah memories!!!

  • 25. Tony | August 20th, 2011 at 9:57 am | #

My favorite fruit, a tough one. I was just saying at work, that I have never come across a fruit I didn’t like. I love them all. From the putridly smelling Durian, the subtle Pepino, which is like a mellow Rockmelon. Luscious raspberries, picked straight from the canes, to the gorgeous texture of a tree ripened Apricot.
NQN, I just love them all, and can’t compromise my taste buds by favoring just one. Seasonal and ever changing is the go here.

My favourite fruit are feijoas because they remind me of my nonnie. She used to have a tree in the garden that was always overloaded with feijoas, that is until me and my cousin got into them :)

  • 27. Cheryl | August 20th, 2011 at 10:02 am | #

When it comes to fruit, I am like a little child with a bag of lollies……….I Can Not put any aside for later, I have tried it numerous times! If I have a juicy ripe piece of natures’ best in front of me, I simply have to eat it.
I guess I would have to say pears are my favourites, but with the modern handling of fruit, quite often the taste is spoiled by the fact that the grower has picked them before they are completely ripe and stored them in cool storage for a lengthy period, to bring them out as ‘Fresh Fruit’.
I will happily munch away on a juicy apple, orange + any and all the summer fruits. A chocoholic I am not……..if there is such a thing then I am a fruitaholic.

my favourite fruit is the banana because it goes with everything – chocolate (or chocolate pudding), nutella, peanut butter, honey, its great on sandwiches, toast, waffles, pancakes, french toast, in smoothies, with strawberries, for fondue and in so many other ways!(My favourite is a nutella and banana jaffle!) Oh and of course it is even more of a treat now because it costs oh so much :(

Well, living double the allowed distance from the Sydney CBD again doesn’t help :( ! Beautiful prize to win tho’! The daily advised fruit/veg amounts were actually increased from the 5-7 helpings still talked of by the Australian health authorities to 9-11 quite a few years ago: of those 2 helpings of fresh fruit are sufficient tho’. Mangos in summer, sweet juicy mandarines in winter for me – love bananas, thankfully at today’s prices they don’t love me: too much potassium [those of you on antihypertensives, have a simple blood test done]. Well, practical advice finished, have a lovely weekend, Lorraine and Mr NQN :) !

Really recommend these guys!

Have to say I LOVE cherries. They are full of memories of Christmas as a kid, complete with seed spitting competitions, but now fill my belly with healthy snacks, are versatile to cook with (blackforest cake, streusel, cheesecake, clafouti, strudel… shall I go on?)and COMPLETELY indulges my sweet tooth. I think I appreciate them all the more, simply because they’re not around all year long!

My favorite fruit has to be the red dragon fruit! Hardly ever seen in Australia but it is a common sight in Singapore! I know, I’m being disloyal to my king of fruits- the durian.. But whilst one certainly cannot have durian everyday, the red dragon fruit has a most amazing flavor! It is deep red in colour, seems to be chock-a-block full of little seeds, but it’s subtly sweet flavor and slightly crunchy texture is amazing!!!

  • 55. lindaf | August 20th, 2011 at 12:04 pm | #

my favourite fruit is strawberries, i love tossing them in a bit of sugar and pan frying in a little bit of butter till they are about to collapse, then serve them on top of icecream! delicious ! they are also wonderful just as is too tossed with aged balsamic vinegar (the best you can buy). :)

Cherries are my favourites. I love the snap as you bite into a cherry and the vivid colour of the juice that dribbles down my children’s chin! Most of all, as soon as summer comes around and cherries are in season, I get transported back to primary school. At our end of year class party we were allowed to bring in a picnic lunch. My beautiful mum always used to pack me, fairy bread, a cupcake and cherries! I couldn’t wait to open my lunchbox and eat those cherries which were a real luxury in those days. In my family, we call them cheeries because that is how they make us feel.

Passionfruit are also great in drinks, with or without alcohol they make a nice mix blended with orange or pineapple juice(more sweet fruits!) mixed with soda or mineral water. So refreshing, I feel like one now. Down to the fruit market to buy some passionfruit!!!

My wife and I have a large plate of fruit for lunch every day – usually about 6 or more varieties. Our favourites vary with the season. Persimmon is an all time favourite, at the moment we’re very taken with golden kiwifruit which is new for us – so sweet and delicious. Mangoes when in their prime are just superb, naval oranges at the moment too. The cherries have been fantastic this year – watermelon an especial favourite, but there’s nothing like papaya with lime juice….Ummmm!

Passionfruit is my favourite. Straight off the vine, bite a hole through the skin and there it is! All that glorious golden sweetness just waiting to be eaten. Eat them by themselves, add them to natural yoghurt, or even better pair them up with other glorious fruit on top of a pavlova. Yummmmmm.

  • 82. WendyA | August 20th, 2011 at 3:58 pm | #

At the moment pears are sweet, juicy and full of fibre. It is getting to the end of the season so I am buying regularly each week to have as much as I can before the season is over.
I love to eat them over yoghurt for breakfast, just sliced and eaten on their own for a midday snack and most of all I love to make the ‘easy one bowl pear tea cake (the recipe from NQN which I now make weekly and goes down well with the family!)

I love love love Durians! The strong ‘aroma’ might send most of you over the “edge” of the (nose) bridge, but the flesh… mmm… what can I say? Simply orgasmic. I love the soft, creamy, rich, heavenly texture, the sweetness that is not overpowering, but with a tinge of bitterness that I really enjoy (sort of bitter sweet). It’s a gourmet fruit that is incredibly yummy and versatile when it comes to making amazing tasting desserts. Durian puddings, durian cheese cakes and durian ice creams are three of my absolute favourites. I’d normally buy durians in bulk from the nearby Footscray market whenever they are in season (January – April), “de-shell” them and store the flesh in air tight containers in the freezer. It just makes it easy when it comes to making that perfect dessert for special occasions and parties. Just be careful to dispose the durian shells properly in covered bins or the police dogs might come knocking! ;-)

P.S. If you happen to visit Bali in your next trip to Indonesia, check out Durian Sambal (traditional Sumatran condiment of chillis, belacan and fermented durian pulps). It’s finger licking GREAT!

How can I possibly pick just one?? Fruit is the ultimate snack food and different seasons bring different favourites – winter is for oranges and mandarins, blackberries and rasberries, summer for nectarines, peaches, rockmelon, grapes, pineapples, Christmas for cherries and strawberries, bananas when they are not in short supply because of droughts and floods, but…….. because they are available all year round the glorious Pink Lady apple from the beautiful Adelaide Hills would have to be my absolute favourite fruit!

  • 90. Ann | August 20th, 2011 at 5:59 pm | #

Just to be different, I really enjoy crimson seedless grapes amongst lots of other favourites already mentioned here.

  • 91. Gloria | August 20th, 2011 at 6:11 pm | #

Grapes! great as a snack, in dessert, makes yummy juice, and best of all, wine!

  • 92. angela | August 20th, 2011 at 6:19 pm | #

Peaches, they’re soft to bite into, so not too harsh on my teeth. I love the texture and they range from very sweet and juice to a little crisp and tart.

I love golden Kiwi. It is very nutritious, taste really nice and full of vitamins.

My favourite fruit is mandarines. They are truly the best citrus fruit. Very handy for people on the go as it can be peeled quite easily. They are available almost throughout the year and taste delicious.

Fruit conjures up a delectable cheese platter…ripe gorganzola cheese,a creamy brie & tangy tasty together with sweet black grapes, just right pears finishing with the best Muscat dessert wine. Heaven!

    Cherries!!!
Certainly a treat, but last season they were quite reasonably priced. A good source of vitamin C, dietary fibre & antioxidants. And they are delicious!!!

  • 97. Roberta Kwun | August 20th, 2011 at 8:01 pm | #

I absolutely adore all fruits and I feel guilty having to choose just ONE :P but I would have to say strawberries. Brightens any fruit salad/yogurt/muesli, you can get naughty by coating them in chocolate, they go perfectly with cream. They’re the perfect balance of exotic and homely.

  • 98. Kelley | August 20th, 2011 at 8:05 pm | #

    cherries… *drool*

But do they taste as good as the ones in season that we devour by the handful after Christmas dinner?

    I think not.

My favourite fruit is the mango! It’s delicious on it’s own and perfect for desserts. I’m craving Chat Thai’s mango sticky rice right now…

I love mangosteen! It’s squishy and tastes like ice-cream. Plus they look like the kind of fruit you would see on a japanese cartoon with their dainty little leaves. Yummmm!!

  • 103. Dressed and Eaten | August 20th, 2011 at 8:56 pm | #

My favourite fruit at the moment are mangosteens. It probably has to with the fact that they are so hard to find. I love their exotic flavour. I first tried them while on our honeymoon in Thailand. I loved them so much I bought a kilo of them while I was over there. Managed to find them this week at a local grocer.

Ice cold watermelon – it brings back memories of standing on our beach-house verandah with my cousins thirty years ago eating great hunks of watermelon grown by grand-dad! Those were the days…

  • 108. Lizzy | August 20th, 2011 at 9:48 pm | #

‘Pomegranate’ we love them. I see that they have made a great come back in the kitchens in Australia of late. Picking the seeds out one by one as a child was very pleasant. Bitter sweet too!

I love custard apples! My earliest memories include banging my head against the unripe ones on our tree in the backyard.. ouch they hurt. But eating them… oh they are so creamy, sweet and refreshing. I always feel exotic and spoilt when I get my hands on a precious custard apple.

My favourite fruits are all summer fruits just cause i have a massive sweet tooth like you.
If i had to choose a favourite it would be watermelons or strawberries they bring back amazing childhood memories of just being in slipslops sitting over the kitchen counter and munching away at the luscious juicy watermelon meat with my family or chewing away at red shiny strawberries.

  • 116. Kerrie | August 20th, 2011 at 10:50 pm | #

My favourite fruit would have to be banana because it is so versatile!
Eat it raw and enjoy its soft texture and sweetness. Put it into cake batter (with a little cinnamon too) to make a yummy banana loaf or muffins.
If you’ve left your bananas for too long and their nearing the brown and squishy stage, just peel and freeze them. Then once frozen solid, you can put them in a food processor and whip up the creamiest tasting icecream EVER (best thing is, no added artificial flavours or colours, 100% natural and vegan friendly)!
Bananas also contain Tryptophan which is a protein that our bodies convert into Serotonin, which is a ‘happy brain chemical’ responsible for relaxation and improving moods.

Such a shame Cyclone Yasi wiped out so many of the banana crops in Qld. :(

I love mandarins! To me, they’re the juicier, sweeter, less messy and more convenient version of oranges so I can still get my Vitamin C during winter but with less hassle! And I have a weird penchant for peeling the skin neatly all in one go.

  • 126. muppy | August 21st, 2011 at 10:45 am | #

Call me boring but apples do it for me, big ones, small ones, red, green and yellow ones. I love them all, and will never tire of this old favorite.

  • 134. Melinda | August 21st, 2011 at 2:21 pm | #

I love red delicious apples the best. My reason can be summed up in their name – they are gorgeously red and very delicious. :-) They are very versatile and can be eaten whole, sliced or cooked up in the slow cooker with a sprinkling of cinnamon. Yum.

  • 135. Samantha | August 21st, 2011 at 4:06 pm | #

I would have to say avocado. Not only is it amazing in virtually any salad, or smeared on toast with cracked pepper and a scattering of sea salt, too many people forget that it is a fruit at all!

  • 136. Sally C | August 21st, 2011 at 5:34 pm | #

I have a great Passion for Passionfruit. Our backyard fences are weighed down with vines that, in summer, hide their little purple flavour grenades…if I can get to them before our dog does. Her smug grin when I walk around the fence on a hot summer day tells me she has beaten me to my prize!

  • 137. Annie | August 21st, 2011 at 7:42 pm | #

Mandarin is my favourite -”naartjie” in the lingo of the country where I was born. It is such a uplifting colour, so easy to peel, so easy to share and then the scent lingers mmm – so light in substance that you reach for a second one – more to share.

  • 138. Beth | August 21st, 2011 at 8:23 pm | #

My 6yo ‘eating challenged’ autistic son is freaked out by most foods, but loves fruit – particularly the BANANA.

I have paid anywhere from $1.99 to about $19 per kilo over the years, but am happy to do so.

The devastation of Cyclones Larry (2006) and Yasi (2011) cannot dampen the fact that this is one of the few foods I can get into his tummy.

Better than $2 for a cheese burger, I say :-)

  • 144. Liz | August 22nd, 2011 at 6:53 am | #

Thats a toughy picking just one favourite fruit.Cherrues and stone fruit remind me of Christmas and there are so many lovely memories associated with that for me.But my one true love is BANANAS!!!!!!!! absence truly makes the heart grow fonder I haven’t a banana in such a long time. Banana as a quick snack at 4.pm when the blood sugars drops is just what the doctor ordered sooo so simple but awesome. There are so many other lovely things to do with bananas that are so delecious I can’t choose, banana cake banoffi pie , open toast with bacon banana ,with breakfast should i keep going on , you get the idea.

I live on a canefarm in Ingham in North Queenland, very obviously well outside the delivery radius of the Brisbane CBD but regardless of that thought I would add a comment anyway. Living in the tropics it is our summer fruit of mangoes, lychees and watermelons that are perfect in combatting tropical heat and humidity. There is nothing like a watermelon freshly picked from the paddock that you know will be crisp and perfect, the telltale crack when the knife breaks into it, a reassuring sign that it is going to be good. The only way to eat it is at the outside table with juices running down our chins and the garden hose at the ready to wash away the stickiness. Taken on a picnic or to the creek and left to chill in the cool of the running stream to be savoured after a refreshing swim is the perfect way to cap off a hot afternoon. I can relate too, to the comments above by Kerry-anne about bananas and their goodness regarldess of price and I must note that since the ravages of Yasi I do not know of any fruit trees locally that have beared fruit since the cyclone; I have never bought lemons and oranges in my life but am finding myself doing so now. Let’s hope things return to normal soon; nature is a formidable force and she leaves us humble with her unquestionable supremacy.

Cherries! Taste aside I think the other reason why I love them so much is the seasonality of it (USA imports not the same!)

  • 154. Annukya | August 22nd, 2011 at 1:50 pm | #

What a lovely basket of fruit!!

My favourite fruit is still watermelon – it has been my favourite since I was a baby (literally!)

The funniest thing is that a few months after I was born, I refused to drink milk in any form. Apparently I would just turn my head and refuse to drink one sip!! In despair my mother began feeding me all sorts of different liquids in an attempt to get me to drink regularly. Turns out watermelon was my favourite! Every day my dad would have to buy a watermelon so that my mum could make it into juice for me. This was a costly exercise at the time as I was born in Port Hedland (a mining town in Western Australia) where fruits like watermelons are not plentiful or cheap!!

To this day I still hate milk, but LOVE watermelon :D :D :D

I don’t have one favourite, but I can narrow it down to a few, Mangoes, Raspberries and Strawberries. But the longer I think about fruit, the more I could name as favourites! My husbands work gets these boxes and the other day he bought home some persimmons that came in it as no-one else knew what they were!

  • 177. Alexandra Duguid | August 26th, 2011 at 2:33 pm | #

My favourite fruit is the humble banana, probably because it’s the fruit that continually surprises me.
I, unlike many other I know, like them REALLY brown. I think that’s because it’s at it’s most sweet and has an almost creamy consistancy. This means that when paired with porridge, or even as a banana fritter, it’s not just damn tasty, but an awesome textural experience!
I recently discovered an awesome way to serve them; in a wholemeal wrap with natural peanut butter and honey. Such a sweet and easy snap, satisfying the sweet took without any of the added baddies!
Plus, I guess you could say I relate to the banana; on the outside they’re not much to look at, but on the inside they’re sweet as hell!

Also, they’re just so easy to eat – no prep necessary!

Bananas are my favourite fruit because they go with everything – chocolate (or chocolate pudding), nutella, peanut butter, honey, its great on sandwiches, toast, waffles, pancakes, french toast, in smoothies, with strawberries, for fondue and in so many other ways!(My favourite is a nutella and banana jaffle!)

And of course it is even more of a treat now because it costs oh so much :(

My favourite fruit is the Kumquat. I love how they are deliciously sweet and sour at the same time. The only downfall is that I cannot find them all year round! YUM!

I’d have to say mangoes. They’re like a gift from God. Mango pudding, mango sorbet, mango soufle. Mangoes are good in anything. Can’t wait now that it’s nearly mango season again!

BANANA PASSIONFRUITS. Growing up we had a huge banana passionfruit vine. I’d go out the backyard as soon as I got home from school, and eat them straight off the vine. Ahhh, the good old days. Unfortunately, you can’t seem to buy them anywhere. I have searched high and low and have yet to find a grocer in my area that sells them. I miss the taste of banana passionfruits.

Custard Apples, Annona reticulata, pale green, bumpy skinned fruit also known as the bullock or bull’s heart is a sweet, creamy delicious fruit that can be turned into superb tasting treats. The irregular heart-like shaped fruit when ripe can be pulled apart with your hands and eaten just like that. Or puree the flesh after removing the inedible black seeds and make it into a clafouti with pitted black cherries in the mix. You can add peeled slices to your favorite chicken curry for an interesting twist. Try a delicate delicious ice cream by pureeing its flesh with cram, milk, egg yolks and orange liqueur. Just amazing. A fantabulous fruit for all!

Dragonfruit with white flesh – I love the sweetness of the flesh and the ‘pop’ of the seeds. My father actually has a tree in his backyard (Looks a lot like an overgrown cactus) so I love that time once a year when he has too many to eat and I am forced to take some (poor me haha)

Peaches, nectarines, plums, mangos, strawberries, banana’s, grapes, custard apples, guava, kiwi fruit, apricots, watermelon, mandarines, berries, apples, oranges, we are so spoilt for choice, however, if I had to pick just one, it would have to be juicy fresh pineapple.

It’s pretty tough to choose a favorite fruit but I think I’d have to go with Mangosteen.

They’re very hard to get down here but they’ve got such a unique taste and they’re so pretty, they’d make the perfect still life.

Strawberries – They’re red, they’re juicy, they’re shaped like an edible heart, and they were the symbol of Venus – the mythological goddess of love.
    They are my aphrodisiac!

One of my favourite Asian fruits is the durian! There is no other fruit quite like it! It’s skin is covered with hard spikes & it has a distinct smell (some say it smells of garbage…but I think it just needs getting used to) and a delicious creamy taste…

Passionfruit is our family favourite. When there are none on our backyard vines I buy the little mesh bags of them at the fruit market, a bag lasts one sitting when my youngest daughter discovers it lurking in the box of vegies. We even had to take a case of canned passionfruit to our cousins in Boston on a recent trip as they can’t buy it there…cans are a poor substitute for the real thing but when you are a desperate homesick Aussie they still fill that sweet addiction!

What a great post. I too find I eat much less fruit through winter than summer as there doesn’t seem as great a variety and I prefer super sweet if I can get it!

I love fruit and have quite a few I would consider favourites including lychees, passionfruit, dragonfruit (strange for me as it’s not exactly sweet), lady finger bananas, mangoes, peacherines and Kiwi fruit.
I quite like pineapple too but I can only have that in smaller amounts as they can be really quite tart on occasion.

Lychees remind me of my gran and go nicely in a trifle, in cocktails, in lime jelly or on their own, fresh from their skins.
Lady finger bananas, home grown by my gran, are even sweeter and have a more full bodied flavour. They also have a slightly different texture, almost a little floury in comparison to the more common bananas. They’re divine though.

Dragon fruit reminds me of a holiday in Vietnam and is refreshing although a much, much subtler flavour than most other fruits.
Passionfruit and mangoes mean summer’s arrived and are the embodiment of everything tropical in my mind. Highly addictive and refreshing, they bring a smile to my face.

Thanks for another great post and for making me even more eager for the arrival of summer! :)

I have now put in my corporate order for Fruit at Work! Can’t wait til Monday!

In terms of favourite fruit – it’s the first peach of the season. There is something about that smell that makes me know summer has arrived and I love just inhaling the beautiful scent!

Bananas, even more so now that we rarely have them because they’re so expensive. They’re so versatile, we love them in smoothies, in pancakes, in desserts, in sandwiches. Before the price hike, it wasn’t unusual to have them for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Great tasting, and they’re a fruit that you can have before you even have teeth…yum!
