Win 1 of 5 King Island Dairy Award Winning Cheese Packs!

Isn’t that a thing of beauty above? What you see above, hot off the presses, is the winner of the Australian Cheeseboard Perpetual Trophy at the Sydney Royal Cheese and Dairy Produce show. It is the King Island Dairy Black Label Cloth Wrapped Cheddar cheese. King Island’s Black Label is their artisan range and is only sold at delis and not at supermarkets. The black label cloth wrapped cheddar from the range is made under the watchful eye and palate of head cheesemaker Swiss born Ueli Berger. This cheese, with its orange and white mold on the cloth is made during spring when the richest milk is available and is matured for at least 13 months. To enjoy, you remove the cloth before eating and take a cheese knife and try the cheese – the centre of the cheese in milder than the rind which is quite strong! It is a dry style firm textured cheddar with earthy aromas. It is a cheddar lover’s dream (and I do love cheddar cheese!).

Thanks to King Island Dairy, five lucky Not Quite Nigella readers will win a ¼ round piece of King Island Dairys’ Black Label Cloth Bound Cheddar, quince paste, crackers, and a Laguiole Jean Dubost cheese knife with the entire pack worth $90 each! For a chance to win all you have to do is tell me which is your favourite cheese and why! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story.  All NQN facebook fans get an automatic entry into the competitions so “like” us if you want to be automatically entered! The competition ends at midnight AEST on the 21st of April, 2012. You can enter this  competition once daily however since cheese needs to be carefully transported it can only be sent to Melbourne metropolitan based readers during business hours as that is where the office is located.

Best of luck!

Lots of love,

Lorraine

Love cheese! But my favourite would be double Brie cheese! Who can resist the oozy, creamy goodness with crackers? Love my cheese with some dried fruit as well.

  • 3. Minou | March 17th, 2012 at 8:15 am | #

Right now Meredith Dairy Marinated Goats Cheese in EVO. It’s absolutely decadent. Rich and mild and infused with flavour from the herbs in the marinade.

I love ( a little too much ) Cape Wickham Double Brie as do my two toddlers, with miss 4 telling me she needed “the cheese with skin” in her lunch box for kinder!

  • 5. Annie | March 17th, 2012 at 8:19 am | #

Yum! This looks amazing! My favourite cheese is King Island Dairy’s Ash Brie. I adore it and as much as I don’t like sharing it, I force feed it to others so they can see how perfect it is too!

Thanks for the opportunity to win! The cheese sounds amazing…

Oh my gosh, I couldn’t choose the cheese for my entry! Which do I like more: blue cheese or brie? Then I realised I forgot about blue brie… Like the lighthouse one that King Island do actually! Yumm – I need to post this comment before I drool on the keyboard.

There was a place in the Hunter Valley that made a “Fromage Blanc” which was kept in oil with sun dried tomatoes. Soft, smooth, oily and yum!

I love all cheese (I’m a “turophile” – cheese lover, haha)
but if I had to pick a favourite it’d have to be sharp, crumbly vintage cheddar – yum!

Saffron C2 from Bruny Island Cheese. Local, hard, unami delicious. A truly beautiful cheese

  • 18. Roni Jean | March 17th, 2012 at 9:27 am | #

Cheese of any sort doesn’t last very long in our household, but our favourite would have to be Mainland Vintage – actually, vintage or sharp of any sort, my teenagers aren’t that fussy. My personal favourite is Ricotta, there’s so many wonderful uses for it in cooking.

  • 19. Em | March 17th, 2012 at 9:35 am | #

I love Meredith Dairy marinated goat’s cheese. I could easily eat a whole jar in one sitting. J loves cheddar so I would like win this one for him.

  • 20. Kirsty | March 17th, 2012 at 9:39 am | #

I’m a fan of camembert (and the King Island one is gorgeous!) becuase of the amount of times I’ve sat around with my girlfriends, some wine, some camembert and quince paste and just laughed and laughed. Oh, and the cheese isn’t bad either!

My great friend is The Wild Woman who lives in Melbourne and who would therefore be the beneficiary should I be lucky enough to win this prize. Our fav cheese is Old Telegraph Road red washed rind. Great with pear paste.

i simply love brie for special occassions but also like extra tasty chedder for everyday

  • 24. Michelle Rothwell | March 17th, 2012 at 10:35 am | #

Double Brie cause of the rich, creamy smooth taste and goes well with either white or red wine.

  • 25. Kirsty | March 17th, 2012 at 10:41 am | #

Oh, drat… just read the bit about Melbourne only. I’m comment 20, so ignore my entry. :(

  • 26. ann | March 17th, 2012 at 10:45 am | #

i love most types of cheese, except blue vein and really mature cheddars, i find them just too bitter and strong. I love ‘young’ cheeses such as mozarella, ricotta, bocconcini, cottage, really mild stuff… I love Edam, Swiss, Gouda. I LOOOOVE Boursin – it’s divine. I like Camembert more than Brie. Cheese is great stuff. Most people don’t know there are tiny animals living inside – cheese mites – you can see them under the microscope. I wonder if people still ate cheese as much if they knew… lol. Thanks for the chance to win, Leanne.

  • 27. ann | March 17th, 2012 at 10:47 am | #

oh, man, just noticed the Melbourne only thing… sorry. ignore my comments. lol

  • 28. Madeleine | March 17th, 2012 at 10:52 am | #

I know that Camembert may not be the most exciting cheese but I just love it. It’s fantastic melting over scrambled eggs!

  • 29. katt | March 17th, 2012 at 10:54 am | #

I love King Island Cheese. My favourite at the moment would be brie. I love getting a fresh baguette and putting some fresh leg ham and also lots brie cheese on the roll with a little bit of fruit chutney, so nice.

  • 30. Margaret | March 17th, 2012 at 10:55 am | #

BoooHooo – I was so excited until I read Melbourne!
I might have to drown my sorrows with the goat cheese I currently have in the fridge!
I do love a sharp cheddar though and will have to hunt down this baby.

  • 31. Katerina | March 17th, 2012 at 10:57 am | #

Hi, I love cheese! My favourite one is blue cheese or marinated camembert. Thank you for this opportunity!
    Katerina

  • 32. Katerina | March 17th, 2012 at 11:08 am | #

ohh, I forgot to say why:) I love the soft texture and rich aroma of blue cheese and marinated camembert is something that reminds me my home (I am from Czech republic and you can get this in every czech pub) Whole cameberts with garlic, onions, spices and chilli peppers marinated in oil with a slice of rye bread plus beer – yummm!

I love the Meredith Dairy Goats Cheese with some watermelon. YUM

  • 34. Ellen | March 17th, 2012 at 11:20 am | #

Hands down it would have to be the Goat Cheese Log from Binnorie Dairy in the Hunter Valley. My boyfriend and I make the long drive there at least once a month to stock up because it is DIVINE (my thighs disagree – ‘BAAA’ HUMBUG). It would definitely play a starring role in my ‘last supper’, alongside some sourdough and a vintage red, of course! ;)

  • 35. Alli | March 17th, 2012 at 11:22 am | #

Oh cheese, how I adore you! And the pick for me? Anything on the verge of oozing right off the edge of the plate. While I’m no cheese expert, I know what I like – and I like it gooey, scooped up with a wafer-thin cracker or a chunk of whiter than white fresh bread! My BFF at the moment is d’Affinois. Mmmm…

  • 36. Bec G | March 17th, 2012 at 11:25 am | #

You mean I should have a favourite?! Oh wow let me see: camembert, swiss, parmesan, cheddar, haloumi, jarlsberg, mozzarella, bocconcini…
Nope, it’s impossible for me to choose!

  • 37. CathyB | March 17th, 2012 at 11:36 am | #

Cheddar cheese is my favourite as I was brought up on it in England. Toasted on home mede bread, with pickles, grated on top of mashed potatoes, over a sausage quiche lorraine thing that mummy made superbly. As a family we visited the original home town of Cheddar in a lovely English village way in the cheddar gorge in Somerset. It seems that way back in 1170 King Henry II purchased Cheddar cheese for a farthing a pound (cheap as chips!) and Scott took around 1600 kg on his famous trip to Antarctica. Some very good cheese and the King Island Dairy’s Black Label cloth Bound cheddar sounds as if it will definitely satisfy my Cheshire loving dreams. Bring it on Lorraine and KIDBLCBC. Yummiforous.

  • 38. Amanda Gorton | March 17th, 2012 at 11:44 am | #

I love cream cheese for its versatility, not only can it be eaten plain but in a cheesecake, for creamy pasta sauce or even icing on the cake it is delicious!

  • 39. Kylie Plester | March 17th, 2012 at 11:52 am | #

Triple Cream Brie because its really not like Cheese at all with its creamy delisciousness but Cheddar is amazing too because it just goes well with everything

Dorset Blue Vinney – a crumbly blue cheese. I was born in Dorset (UK) and always loved this particular blue cheese. It goes well with another Dorset product – The Dorset Knob which is a crumbly hard biscuit only made in Dorse. Can’t get much more Dorset than that. It’s a very beautiful corner of the world

  • 43. Hotly Spiced | March 17th, 2012 at 12:12 pm | #

  • 47. Charm | March 17th, 2012 at 12:43 pm | #

It’s so very difficult to just pick one cheese, it’s like asking me to choose a favorite child! I’d have to say, right at this exact moment, it would have to be Brie. Mmmmmm…

  • 48. Maryann | March 17th, 2012 at 12:48 pm | #

I lurve a good strong cheese but lately, I’ve been enjoying the lighter taste of Bocconcini and a nice ricotta.

  • 49. AltoAdura | March 17th, 2012 at 12:51 pm | #

So much cheese, so little time… If I could eat one cheese only for the rest of my life it would have to be blue brie. I eat this with my own homemade quince paste and some of the Waterthin rice crackers or a crusty sour dough baton, washed down with either a crisp white or a lighter style beer.

  • 50. sophia | March 17th, 2012 at 1:11 pm | #

I know I can’t enter, but I just wanted to say how jealous I am of the future winner!! I adore cheddar cheeses, and I’m talking about the legit good ones, not the shredded Kraft ones. My favorite, however, is brie, goat cheese and burrata.

  • 51. Julie Krause | March 17th, 2012 at 1:49 pm | #

What can I say? Delicious, yummy, delightful and I would devour the hole lot by myself.

  • 52. Diana Donato | March 17th, 2012 at 2:22 pm | #

Camembert, soft, smooth, silky, deliciously addictive! I can’t get enough of it….and don’t worry about any crackers, I’m happy to hold the whole thing in my hand and munch on it like an apple!! Yes, oink oink, but yum, so yum!!

  • 53. DIANA OZELIS | March 17th, 2012 at 2:24 pm | #

Swiss cheese, since I was little it’s been my favourite. I enjoy it on or with most things, especially focaccia with turkey and cranberry.

  • 54. Ernie | March 17th, 2012 at 2:26 pm | #

Nan’s home made cheese, it’s white, soft yet crumbly and full of caraway seeds. Unlike any cheese on the market I’ve ever tried. It’s ridiculously moreish and the old devil won’t give anyone her recipe!

  • 55. HELEN | March 17th, 2012 at 2:46 pm | #

I love Feta cheese because it’s versatile; from salads to saganaki prawns, from omelettes to cheese triangles, it’s a favourite for all.

  • 56. Lizzie | March 17th, 2012 at 2:53 pm | #

sigh… as it happens, King Island cheeses are my absolute favourites, with their triple brie being ‘heaven in a white rind’! Unfortunately I live in Adelaide…

  • 57. Margaret Bird | March 17th, 2012 at 2:56 pm | #

My favourite cheese is a nice sharp mature cheddar. Can’t go past it.

  • 58. Lizzi | March 17th, 2012 at 3:04 pm | #

STILTON. My grandparents (well, now just grandmother) live in England, in an area that’s a big producer of the stuff. I fell in love when visiting them a few years ago. SIMPLY CANNOT GET ENOUGH. (in fact, for dinner tonight i’m making a steak and stilton pie!)

My boyfriend even gave me a GIGANTIC slab (like.. 2 kilograms) of stilton for our first Valentine’s day together a few years ago… AWWW. ahahaha.

  • 59. Rachel | March 17th, 2012 at 3:12 pm | #

I love an aged cheddar with a bit of bite, but still creamy! My other favourites include a nice soft, gooey Camembert and Jalsberg which I used to refer to as REAL mouse cheese when I was younger – because of the holes!!!

  • 60. Kat | March 17th, 2012 at 3:22 pm | #

    Hi NQN,
My favourite cheese is Burrata because it is such a textural sensation! The burst of cream and the stringy innards is just soooooo…. Yum. For me, Burrata is a standalone dish amd not merely one component on a cheese platter. Thank you for running such a marvelous comp! Cheers, Kat
    P.S. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  • 61. Barbara | March 17th, 2012 at 3:24 pm | #

Brie is my favourite for sure,
Always buying it at the store.
The softness makes it so creamy,
Add some crackers and it’s dreamy.

  • 62. Kerrie | March 17th, 2012 at 3:29 pm | #

I love the stinkiest of stinky washed rind soft cheese, or POO cheese as its affectionately known in our house!

  • 63. Libby | March 17th, 2012 at 3:40 pm | #

Haloumi! I always keep a block of haloumi in the fridge at work so that when I’m feeling hungry at 3pm, instead of grabbing candy or chips, I simply cut some slices of haloumi and pop them in the sandwich press. As soon as they’re ready, I squeeze a bit of lemon on the slices, and then dust them lightly with chilli flakes. Best afternoon snack ever – full of protein and keeps me full until dinner time :)

  • 64. misty | March 17th, 2012 at 4:14 pm | #

I love almost all cheeses, but my favorite right now is horseradish cheddar, not only does it hit the spot it is great on sheperds pie.. sooooo good!! I am on a low carb diet and its just so good.. I crave it everyday..

    Double Brie for me.
Actually sharp & crumbly, soft & smooth, it doesn’t much matter, I pretty much love them all, especially with nuts & a red.

  • 66. Cranky Nan | March 17th, 2012 at 4:46 pm | #

Cheese (especially cheddar) and water. The only two things needed on earth. Congratulations King Island on another amazing product. Yum

    Hi Lorraine,
Marvelous web page. I enjoy all your stories and recipes.
My favourite cheesecake is Blueberry. Soft, creamy, tangy (I put lemon zest into the cheese batter)and cover the top with blueberries (lots!) slightly cooked in a brown sugar light syrup after cooling. I cover the top with toasted slivered almonds and serve. It is also mu daughter’s favourite cheesecake. If you try it, I hope you like it!

  • 70. Yvonne | March 17th, 2012 at 6:25 pm | #

Now for the competition….my favourite cheese for cooking is cream cheese. For tasting, Havarti is my choice. Served with sliced green apples and sliced pears sprayed with Frangelico, it has been a success to the end of any dinner I serve for my guests.

My favourite cheese? It’s like asking me to pick a favourite child!
I guess my absolute kryptonite is Tarago River’s Shadows of Blue. It’s the most gorgeous, oozy brie with ripples of mild blue throughout. It is simply divine and life would not be the same without it.

  • 75. Rani | March 17th, 2012 at 8:09 pm | #

I don’t know what this cheese was was called but the year was 2008,and the place was Alcase,France. The smell was akin to dynamic lifter and the taste was like tiny cheese angels crying pure deliciousness into my mouth….ahhhh, cheese memories

  • 76. Jenny Johnson | March 17th, 2012 at 8:22 pm | #

King Island black label double cream brie is my all time fav……I tasted it at a trade show in Sydney a few years ago and at that stage you couldn’t get it anywhere except if you were “in the business” (seeing I snuck in to the trade show and they only sold black label at that stage to “trade”) BUT they changed their policy and I found it at Caesar’s at Erina…………ANY King Island black label stuff is really divine.

  • 77. Jadey | March 17th, 2012 at 8:25 pm | #

My favourite cheese is a good creamy Brie. Nothing can beat the gooey texture and creamy feel on the tongue. (or at least nothing yet) would love to try his black cloth cheese yummmmm

  • 78. Teresa Lee | March 17th, 2012 at 8:46 pm | #

  • 80. Rebecca | March 17th, 2012 at 8:52 pm | #

I love pretty much all cheeses but I do really love the Hunter Valley Cheese Co’s Gold washed rind…so stinky it almost needs its own fridge…but creamy and luscious!! Their Riley’s Fromage Blanc is lovely as well! I’m so lucky they are close by!! :-) Great prize though…a cheese platter isn’t complete without some cheddar & quince paste!

  • 81. Alessandra | March 17th, 2012 at 9:12 pm | #

Pity I am in NZ, good luck to all the others.

Lorraine, do you have any recommendations for Alice Springs?

    Ciao

    i love mature aged cheddars..yum!

  • 83. Denise | March 17th, 2012 at 9:24 pm | #

This is very unrefined for me compared to everyone saying Brie or Camembert.

But ULTIMATE favourite is a big tub of cottage cheese with bread :-) .

But if I’m being fancy – I want a fruity cheese with apricots…I’m not sure of the fancy name but it’s yummy and sweet!

  • 84. belinda | March 17th, 2012 at 9:47 pm | #

i have had a few attempts at making brie and my favourite was a well ripened red wine washed rind brie style cheese. Delightfully yummo…however i’ve been looking forward to a visit to King Island for many years to sample ALL their cheeses…might even visit Bruny Island while i’m over that way too

  • 85. Anne-Marie Parkinson | March 17th, 2012 at 10:01 pm | #

My favourite is Milawa cheddar yum yum yum (sharp, tangy and crumbly). Currently second to that would be Jarslberg (nutty and sweet)and then third is haloumi (I love how it is kind of squeaky when you fry and then eat it).

  • 86. Eva | March 18th, 2012 at 1:40 am | #

I know I can’t win, but I’ll tell you my favourite cheese anyway! It has to be époisse, no wait, gorgonzola, no wait, gruyère, no wait…
Oh my, too many to choose from. I’d love to try that particular cheese, as I do love cheddar too!

  • 87. Amanda Liddell | March 18th, 2012 at 7:29 am | #

Just the thought of a beautiful cheese simply on it’s own or served with truffle honey, I love, love, love, Delice a creamy soft cheese which has a little bite and I was introduced to this by my 95year old cousin. So age does not taketh away the palate of a cheese lover.

  • 88. Brendan | March 18th, 2012 at 10:15 am | #

My sentimental favourite is Stilton (mmmm … great with port!) but overall favourite is Gorganzola :)

  • 89. Antonietta | March 18th, 2012 at 11:48 am | #

I am amorous over aged Pecorino, the tang and saltiness of the cheese is divine. On the palette it just melts and leaves me wanting more, so I won’t tell you how much of it I eat. I also enjoy Blue Vein, the creamier the better, the smell doesn’t worry me at all as I indulge in some of the best cheese I can find. :)

  • 90. Melissa Nowlan | March 18th, 2012 at 12:43 pm | #

Camembert or pecorino or brie or a good smoked cheese – LOL there are too many choices. I’m cheese easy :)

  • 91. patch | March 18th, 2012 at 2:24 pm | #

Blue (castello) cheese as my experience is that it has the best contrast of TANG and creaminess and goes so well with so many pastes and fruits and keeps you going back for more, not to mention the versatility of blue and gorgonzola cheeses on pizzas, pastas, and plain eating on it’s own. yum.

  • 92. Darrin | March 18th, 2012 at 2:33 pm | #

Brique d’affinois…. (French triple cream brie cheese)

  • 93. Di | March 18th, 2012 at 3:35 pm | #

I love all cheeses. Especially Jindi triple cream brie.

  • 94. Megan | March 18th, 2012 at 3:57 pm | #

Well, my most used cheese would have to be in feta. We put it in most salads and it just seems to go so well with so many dishes: pasta, bakes, pizza, most things really.

Having said that Brie or Camembert has got to be my favourite cheese. It gets bought on special occasions making it just that more enjoyable. I must say I always enjoy a quince or fig paste with it also.

Chevre all the way. I love it on bread, biscuits, pizza and probably a whole heap of other stuff I haven’t even tried yet!
;-) I don’t think people give goats cheese enough credit. That being said, I’m fine with that…more for me!

  • 106. Bianca | March 19th, 2012 at 8:58 am | #

Its hard to choose, so I will let you know about my current fave….

I have only just discoved Epoisses cheese and I thought it was divine!!

I came across it whilst making a recipe from a Peter Doyle book for a dinner party and it was rocking!!

It was Handmade Epoisses Ravioli in a clear Onion broth – I was pretty proud of myself actually!! It was delicious, and I just added a few thyme leaves to the cheese before folding the raviloi – yum

Since then I have popped it on 2 cheese boards!

Fabulous giveaway! I’m a lover of all sorts of cheese but a good, aged cheddar would have to be my favourite. Followed either by a quality feta or mozzarella, depending on the day.

  • 108. Nic@diningwithastud | March 19th, 2012 at 10:07 am | #

Im SUCH a sucker for some truffle pecorino. I love the earty truffle in such a salty and bitey cheese. Although its dangerous in my fridge as I just break off chunks all day so theres none left for the actual dishes at dinner lol

My favourite at the moment is Comboyne Cheese companies Bluembert. Its Amazing. I have been gorging on cheese lately as a recent change from being a vegan for 6 years. Cheese was my undoing and now I’m making up for lost time with as many cheeses as possible.

Favourite cheese is anything thats not soft centered these days. Im pregnant and can’t have soft cheeses!!
Seriously, tho, anything with a bit of bite, or a nice smoke to it is just wonderful… but I like to explore – why stick to just one??!!

  • 112. David | March 19th, 2012 at 2:41 pm | #

Cheddar cheese, i’ll admit it’s not very imaginative because it’s the only cheese i know! I love using it on everything from nachos to sadwitches, i’d love to win this and sample a new kind of cheese!

  • 114. Belinda P | March 19th, 2012 at 6:18 pm | #

There are too many good cheeses to name however if you put a gun to my head and told me I could only have one variety of cheese for the rest of my life (and why would you do that to someone) then I would have to say Gruyère. If my captors allowed me more then I would include buffalo mozzarella, raclette, parmigiano reggiano or sbrinz. If my hubby was with me then he would pick manchego, brie, appenzeller – hmm come to think of it, being Swiss, there isn’t a cheese he doesn’t like and my son luckily grew up in Europe so never experienced being beat up in the playground after pompously declaring that his favourite cheese was Brie de Meaux or Tête de Moine (which gloriously translates to Head of the Monk!). Here in Australia, we are also impressed with the Meredith Dairy Goat’s cheese as well as the King Island Double Brie however I suspect there is a Swiss behind it all because it is so good! I struggle to get the boys to try cheddar at all so would relish the opportunity to prove to them that there is such a thing as a good Cheddar!

Brie is to be blessed as it is a wonderful standby if you have had a big lunch and don’t want a big dinner or supper. Just take the Brie which you have bought in its wooden circular case. (if you did not have a case saved from a previous purchase. Take its packing top off and put the case in a heated medium oven for about 10 minutes. Have your biscuits, butters, grapes and other fruit on your board. There you are a super snack to enjoy with little work. No fuss. (You can use Camembert too)Enjoy.

    Dear Aged Cheddar,

    Living life on knife’s edge is to be admired;
    Even if deemed extreme.
Crumbling perfectly onto a cracker to satiate,
    You do indeed succeed!

    Experienced with different cultures,
Blue vein may have come close.
    But Cheddar, my love is yours forever;
A bite as delightful, no other can boast.
