Win A Donna Hay Cookbook Pack With A Signed Copy of “A Cook’s Guide”!

Everyone knows that Donna Hay is a cookbook icon and each year when one of her cookbooks come out (15 with a 16th out in May this year) eager hordes of people flock to the bookstore to buy the latest book. They’re always lushly photographed and yet the recipes still manage to be achievable. It’s that wonderful cooking equation: looks complicated yet requires minimal effort which is totally addictive and why I adore her books. Plus she is a lovely lady too!

A Cook’s Guide is her newest book which has a cherry picked selection of the best from the How to Cook section from Donna Hay magazine. It shows you the best, basic cooking techniques and recipes-she shows you how to make your own curry paste, gnocchi, roasts, carpaccio, flatbread, sponge cake, scones, souffles, cheesecake and pavlovas but also incorporates variation suggestions so that you can mix it up. An example is the pavlova chapter which has a basic pavlova recipe but also recipe variations  such as almond pavlova stack, rosewater pavlovas with blueberries, chocolate and raspberry pavlovas and brown sugar cupcake pavlovas all using the same basic pavlova methodology.

What if you could get an autographed copy of A Cook’s Guide signed by the lady herself? Well that’s what we’re giving away today! One lucky winner will win a copy of A Cooks Guide (signed by Donna) as well as a copy of Fast, Fresh, Simple; Instant Entertaining and No Time to Cook!  For a chance to win this pack all you have to do is tell me which is your favourite Donna Hay cookbook! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at midnight AEST 4th of June, 2011. You can enter this  competition once daily and it is open to anyone within Australia.

***The winner is: Merryn G. of NSW!***

Best of luck!

Lots of love,

Lorraine

I have never purchased a Donna Hay cookbook but have purchased the kids issue of her magazine for my daughter. I stumbled across this competition from another site (looking for a recipe for cake pops to make with my daughters) and thought I just had to enter for my 9 year old daughter who in pretend play will name Donna as her mum, when I questioned where the name Donna came from she said Donna Hay. My Daughter loves to cook and with all the cooking shows on TV Donna has obviously become a favourite of hers I think A Cooks Guide would become a bible to my daughter as she learns to cook.

Her books always have THE most gorgeous food photos. I practically want to eat the pages. Hmm, probably less caloric than the real thing. LOL But not nearly as tasty.

Instant Entertaining is my favourite. I’ve used it heaps of times when I have visitors and am in a hurry. It has the menus already set out and never fails to impress. Love the look on people’s faces when they see the recipes and go “is that all?”. I am all for big impact low effort!

They would have to be the Classics Vol 1 & 2. To me they are Donna Hay – inspirations and variations of an idea and basic recipe.

What a wonderful prize! I love Donna Hay’s cookbooks. My favourite though would have to be Seasons, it’s just so beautiful. It’s beautiful to sit and flip through and contains absolutely delicious recipes.

My favourite is Off the Shelf. It was the first Donna Hay book I bought and it got me really into cooking, preparing my food to take to work every day. From there onwards I subscribed to the mags -it’s been nearly 6 years now receiving them. and I have nearly all the books.

I don’t how many people have asked me for the recipe for the “toasted pine nut and sweet potato salad” in “The Instant Cook”…it’s become one of my signature dishes, best salad ever!

My favourite Donna Hay cookbook is The Instant Cook. I have not been much of a cook until recent years. It dawned on me that I would have to apply really myself to making good food at home and then I could actually be a good cook. So in the last 3 years I have embraced home cooking with a confidence I never had in the past. Of course I have become a collector of cook books along the way. I don’t have a big collection but I am working on it. Donna Hay is amazing and I wish I had all of her books!

  • 21. Lauren!! | April 30th, 2011 at 9:45 am | #

Absolute shock and horror – amongst my hundreds and hundreds of cookbooks collected over many decades there is none written by Donna Hay!! How is that possible for a foodie? I simply do not know! :) I have, however, used many of the lady’s fab recipes from magazines and have very much appreciated her warm persona on TV! I suppose that does not make me worthy of a first Donna Hay on my shelves! :D ?

  • 24. karina pullinen | April 30th, 2011 at 9:52 am | #

All of them! As an 18 year old who has just discovered the joys of cooking, her cook books are invaluable to me. I love her carefree style and inspiring presentation but most of all how she makes it so beautifully easy.

I have a MILLION cookbooks, but NOT ONE Donna Hay amongst them! I can guess which one would BECOME my favourite tho…”A cooks guide”, just how you’ve described the pavlova recipes alone! I love variations! it’s 100% the way I cook…read a recipe…replace this with that, take out some of this…pop in some of that :) I want to know how she does the pavlova cup cakes NOW!! Sounds DELIGHFUL! :)

I love ‘Fast, Fresh, Simple’; it has a nice balance between achievable weeknight dinners using common ingredients, and special occasion meals as well. Being a student in a sharehouse it’s great to have a break from the usual dahl/casserole dinners. Plus I’m a sucker for buying vegies in bulk at the end of market day, so it’s great to have so many recipes using nice, fresh ingredients!

I know that “Fast, Fresh and Simple” will be fabulous as I watch her TV show on Austar each Tuesday salivating in anticipation of her next dish. Even my welcome line on my facebook page was “Donna Hay is my guru”. Love her, love her.

I never buy recipe books but after realising cooking a special dinner for me and my boyfriend’s first year anniversary, I realised what a terrible cook I actually was. The first recipe book I ever purchased was Donna Hay’s ‘The Instant Cook’. I love to say that I can cook some of the best dishes now that I’ve read it! She’s really inspired me and picked me up off the ground!

Food Fast: I’ve had this more than 10 years and it is still probably my most-used and without doubt my most inspiring cookbook. I have tried virtually every recipe and have scrawled notes all over the pages to remind me of variations I’ve tried and dishes that my hubby or kids have particularly loved. With preparation time starting from 10 minutes then providing I’ve managed to find time for shopping that week, no matter how tired or busy we are I can virtually always get a meal on the table before a takeaway could have been delivered.

Definitely the Fast, fresh, simple. I survived the easter break by cooking and baking with my 11yo daughter with the help of donna hay’s easy, no fuss recipe which my daughter has no difficulty following. Now she has a portfolio of recipes which she can confidently cook and bake. She especially loves the pumpkin soup, panna cotta and the chocolate fondant.
It was quality time well spent with my daughter. Thanks, Donna Hay.

My favourite would be her “the instant cook” cookbook, it has a lot of easy and quick recipes, it also has a lot of tips and tricks for time saving. Thanks so much for giving us all the chance to win :)

Love Donna’s books and magazines! The great thing is that after a long day at work you can throw together a fabulous meal just because of the inspiration in her books and mags. She shows you that delicious tasting food isn’t difficult to cook. Would love to cook up a storm with her latest books.

  • 107. shirley@Kokken69 | April 30th, 2011 at 8:36 pm | #

Donna Hay always works her styling magic. I saw the way she divided out the judging portions on Junior Masterchef… styling comes so effortlessly to her.

Hands down No Time To Cook – Less cleaning and simple ingredients, makes me a legend in the kitchen to my unsuspecting partner and saves us from moving mushrooms in our takeaway!

My favourite book by Donna Hay is called the Seasons. I try to only cook food that is season as it tastes and best and is at its freshest.!
I love turning every page at the start of a new season and seeing what great ideas Donna has come up with.

  • 110. Maryann | April 30th, 2011 at 8:55 pm | #

I have a couple of Donna’s books and although I’ve used the Classics 2 book a lot, a have to admit that I really love one of her magazines, which I bought ages ago, the most! It has fabulous recipes, tips and great photography too! Unfortunately, I have too many other magazine subscriptions, so I’m not allowed to commit to Donna’s magazine just yet!

  • 111. cherz | April 30th, 2011 at 9:16 pm | #

    Just love pavlova.

I love No Time to Cook – I bought it from the David Jones Foodhall a while ago because it looked so nice on the shelves and the recipes are so simple and delicious! I have been trying out a lot of the recipes instead of buying food at the uni outlets in order to save money.

  • 113. Linda Walker | April 30th, 2011 at 9:31 pm | #

I’m a big fan of Classics 2, Donna’s recipes always manage to make me look like a culinary genius!

yes, sadly, just like one of the respondents above, i can not claim to have a favourite as i do not own any of her books. I was a subscriber to her magazine, which I called my ‘food porn fix’, until it became too expensive as i had a child and became a single parent.
I would love to win any of her books.
    thank you.

  • 125. Mark | May 1st, 2011 at 12:02 am | #

Simple Essentials – Chocolate does it for me! When it comes to cooking, I have two left feet… I bought this book as a gift for my wife, and have even attempted the triple chocolate semifreddo myself, much to our friends’ delight! What with Mother’s Day just around the corner, what better way to extend our Donna Hay collection than with a book set like this!

  • 126. Silvia | May 1st, 2011 at 12:31 am | #

My favourite has to be “Chocolate”!! when i’m stressed, i cook. and cooking with chocolate is definitely my ultimate comfort!

Tough choice, but Classics 1 for me. I love Seasons for the gorgeous styling and inspiration, but I find myself going back to Classics 1 time and time again for quick everyday meals.

Off the shelf is my one & only,
It lives on my coffee table & never gets lonely!
Instant Entertaining and No Time to Cook,
Sounds to me it’ll be, my next favourite Book!

  • 134. Glenda | May 1st, 2011 at 11:23 am | #

My favourite Donna Hay would have to be Marie Claire Cooking. 10 years later I still return to that book regularly and in my humble opinion was a groundbreaker as far as photography and styling in addition obviously to delicious uncomplicated recipes. Her books have now been copied in style (the ultimate compliment). This has made Donna Hay stand out from the pack.

I have five of her books but amazingly not one from the giveaway set. I am very much enjoying her television series “Fast Fresh Simple” on the Lifestyle channel.

  • 135. Corrie | May 1st, 2011 at 11:25 am | #

I love Seasons because all the pictures are so beautiful they easily transport you to a hot summer picnic or a brisk autumn walk in a instant. But for recipe its has to be Modern Classics volume 2 purely for the triple chocolate chip cookie recipe. I made these once in London for my nephews birthday party and can’t tell you how many compliments they received. Even when we moved back to oz and sold most of my cook books at car boot, that recipe was copied word for word into my scrap book, to make sure I never lost such a delicacy.

  • 136. Liv | May 1st, 2011 at 12:29 pm | #

I, unfortunately, don’t own any of Donna’s books :( But every time I’m in a book store, and or in David Jones, I always pick one of her books to browse for a couple of minutes, wishing I had the money to buy it.
If I had to pick one that I love looking at (a hard decision!!), it’d be Modern Classics 2… desserts… yum!! :)

  • 137. InTolerantChef | May 1st, 2011 at 12:32 pm | #

I have and regularly refer to her old cookbooks she wrote through Marie Claire. The “how to” pages are most useful, as is her website which has recipe sections that makes searching for what you want much easier.

YES PLEASE! I really really need a ‘A COOK’S GUIDE’ for a cook with ‘NO TIME TO COOK’ any ‘FAST, FRESH, SIMPLE’ food for ‘INSTANT ENTERTAINING’.
My favourite of Donna’s books is ‘the instant cook’ because three of my all time favourite recipes are from that book.

  • 149. Spotted Pufferfish | May 1st, 2011 at 8:27 pm | #

  • 159. Monica | May 2nd, 2011 at 9:25 am | #

Hi Lorraine ….. i would say the modern classics book 1 changed the way i cook … it just had to die for pics and the recipes actually are do-able .. all of her books are great but yeah that one gets my vote … also Miss hay seems to have morphed into quite the spunk over the years don’t you think ?

  • 160. Julie | May 2nd, 2011 at 9:31 am | #

Modern Classics 2 – but where to begin with a favourite recipe?? Blueberry cheesecake, flourless choc cakes, banana cinnamon bread. Yep, I can NOT choose a favourite!I also love that people always think you have gone to a lot more trouble than you really have!

  • 161. Bernadette | May 2nd, 2011 at 9:44 am | #

I want to cook and eat todays Rhubarb Meringue cake, but I need to lose weight. If I had those Donna Hay books I could just look at beautiful pictures of food instead of eating it. :-)

No time to cook is my only, but favourite book and I’d be eager to add more to my collection! I love the section on cooking some for now and some for later. Great to stick in the freezer and have a quick meal only needing a microwave!

  • 163. Pia | May 2nd, 2011 at 9:52 am | #

    Fast, Fresh, Simple is Donna Hay’s best cookbook by far;
    Sharing all those fabulous ideas and recipes, what a star;
    For cooks around the world she has raised the bar;
Teaching us simply how to chop and mix and char….

  • 164. Priscilla | May 2nd, 2011 at 9:57 am | #

Fast, Fresh, Simple is my favourite cookbook because the recipes are so quick and easy to make and use things that I already have in the pantry and fridge/freezer. The best thing is that this cookbook has taught me even though I may be using simple everyday ingredients, and even though I’m only spending about 30 minutes cooking, the meals I can produce can be beautiful and a feast for the eyes and the belly!

No time to cook for sure! It was given to me as a gift by my partner, and is the only DH cookbook I have. Most pages have food splatters from many-a-culinary creations!
I love the section where all meals can be made in one dish, as no time to cook definitley equates to no time to wash up as well!

I am the proud ownner of every single issue of Donna Hay magazine ever published and love each and every one! I have just pulled out all the “Autumn” issues which provide great inspiration for what to cook up around what produce is in season and the colder weather. I just adore Con Poulos’ photography.

I also have most of Donna’s cookbooks – my favourite would have to be Seasons.

  • 182. Deborah | May 2nd, 2011 at 6:28 pm | #

“Seasons” would have to be my favourite Donna Hay recipe book as my daughter gave it to me and we love to choose and cook recipes from it together!

  • 183. Sarah | May 2nd, 2011 at 6:46 pm | #

Mine would have to be Modern Classics 2 – not for the brilliant recipes, but for the countless baking disasters that eventuated! It was the first cookbook that I purchased with my own money as a teen baking enthusiast – lots of enthusiasm but without the talent it seemed! I learned the hard way that baking is all about precision and timing. I still remember the time I threw out a horribly bitter orange cake (used the rinds and all) at 2am before any of my family members could discover the offending item! Sigh..

  • 184. Aleah | May 2nd, 2011 at 7:07 pm | #

My favourite Donna Hay cook book has to be Classics 1 & 2. The recipes are so simple and tasty. But I would love to try ‘No time to cook’ because I have no time to cook :-)

I adore Flavours as you can make a fab meal from a couple of basics – lemon or onion or even chocolate! I also love her magazines and have been subscribing since she started. I always pick 5 dishes from each mag that I cook….although I rarely stop at 5!!!

  • 188. Amie | May 2nd, 2011 at 10:16 pm | #

My favourite is No Time to Cook. The food is fresh and quick to make when you have no time but still looks amazing! The pictures are drool worthy!

  • 189. BonniesCouncel | May 2nd, 2011 at 10:23 pm | #

Mother Darling just gave me a copy of “Seasons” as an anitdote to my hubby’s all too successful efforts at starting a vegie garden last Spring. He tilled, composted and fertilized his way to a bumper crop of goodies and we have been drowning in a succession of tomatoes, beans, corn, pumpkins, eggplants and capsicums for months. Whilst it sounds like foodie heaven it’s not as my hubs can’t cook to save his life and I ran out of new recipe ideas long ago. Unfortuntely most of the produce has been given away to anyone and everyone or more shamefully ended up as chook feed. Mother Darling’s last visit shone disaproval on our wasteful ways – hence the cook book gift and thankfully it has reinvigorated our kitchen!

  • 193. rhiannon | May 3rd, 2011 at 10:08 am | #

Seasons is my favourite – I got it for my 21st. It has some lovely recipes which I have cooked a lot, but it also makes a great coffee table book because of the beautiful pictures… but A Cook’s Guide sounds pretty good, especially the chocolate & raspberry pavlova recipe!

  • 194. Merryn Galluccio | May 3rd, 2011 at 11:06 am | #

I love Donna Hay’s ‘Instant Entertaining’ for it’s quick, simple offerings that are tasty. The ‘Spiced Prawns’ are a delicious yet fast dish that has become a weekly staple as an entree in our house. Any cook book that brings a regular dish into your reportoire is well worth having. Just adore Donna’s speedy suggestions for modern yet satisfying dining. I am sure her other cookbooks are equally fulfilling.

I think Donna Hay is fantastic! I often buy her magazine & always read her recipes in the Sunday Magazine, however I’m quite embarrased to say I don’t actually own any of her cookbooks! Although I do have some of the cookbooks she did when she was food editor at Marie Claire – my favorite being ‘Dining’ as it is great for menu planning special dinner parties!

In an endlessly expanding cupboard of cookbooks, I’m very partial to Donna’s ‘Modern Classics 2′ for baking recipes as well as some inspiration to kick-start experimenting (although I can’t resist the magazine as an indulgence too, preferably with a cup of tea and a chocolate digestive to keep it company!). The cook’s guide would be ever so helpful to bring a bit more method to the kitchen madness – lovely giveaway, Lorraine!

Ooh, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to enter this but have it sent to family in Australia (to forward on to me in England), but i’ll comment anyway because a) it’s always so generous of you running these competitions for your readers and b) I really love her Simple Essential books (especially the red cloth-bound ‘Fruit’ book – it contains a recipe for the yummiest banana bread I’ve ever made). Her books are a bit tricky to find here, but I’m trying to track down her reasonably new book on seasonal food, which looks just gorgeous.

For christmas I recieved Donna’s Instant Entertaining and I just love it for the styling ideas to make my dinner parties extra special. I can’t wait to check out her new book. The added variations for each recipe is a great idea.

Ok, I don’t have spare money to buy cookbooks new, but I did find her Modern Classics 2 at my local market and I am addicted to it. I adore baking and that book is so well used, I had to cover it to keep it together. To win that pack would be a dream for me ( and my husband)

  • 207. Rebecca | May 4th, 2011 at 2:01 pm | #

I don’t own a Donna Hay cookbook :( Though I’d love to because the photographs are always so lovely! And the photos are one of the best parts of a cookbook…if it doesn’t have good photos I probably won’t buy it!

  • 208. Mervyn | May 4th, 2011 at 2:38 pm | #

My favourite is Modern Classics 2. I drooled over it for months and my grandparents gave it to me for my 12th birthday. It was my first real cook book and i still use it today 7 years later. It has a no fail shortcrust pastry recipe and a recipe for AMAZING flourless chocolate cakes! Instant entertaining is next on my list ;) it looks pretty amazing ^^

  • 214. Anna Geldenhuys | May 4th, 2011 at 5:53 pm | #

    No Time To Cook!!

My lovely daughter gave me this for obvious reasons after moving back to Aust!

Panicky about what to cook later this year for her future Scottish in-laws – I now have the perfect answer!!

Donna Hay’s beautiful pavlova! THANK YOU!

‘Instant Entertaining’ is my lifesaver. My husband has to entertain clients and sometimes I am given but a moments notice to magically make a gourmet meal appear! I should, of course, also be stress free and looking great when they arrive – hard to achieve before I came across this lifesaving & timesaving secret of mine.

  • 217. Alicia | May 5th, 2011 at 2:43 pm | #

  • 219. Shan | May 6th, 2011 at 12:41 pm | #

I think I use the ‘Modern Classics’ books the most – just because it’s such a good reference for the basics if you want a quick refresh on something bog standard they are brilliant. But for drooling over the gorgeous images I love ‘Seasons’ – yes, I have all the recipes in the big stack of magazines on the shelf but it just makes me want to wear a floaty white dress and have a picnic of impractically gorgeous food whilst laughing with impractically gorgeous people in a meadow :) lovely.

Which is the favourite? That’s like asking a mother which is her favourite child! No mother will ever admit that she has a favourite and nor will I ever admit to a favourite cookbook. Some might be used more than others but you never know what inspiration or need, will hit when or where and that’s when all the cookbooks have a chance to become the favourite of the moment

I haven’t got a Donna Hay cook book but I subscribe to the Magazine and I must admit I have taken to hiding it under the cushions when my 80year old mum visits as I often “accidently” relocates, so I guess my favourite Donnna Hay cook book will be also my mum’s!!
