Win 2 VIP Tickets To The Variety of Chefs Dinner Worth $1000!

VIP. Don’t you love those three letters? Don’t you also love it when you can talk to chefs, have a great meal and a good time all in aid of charity? Variety of Chefs is a charity for sick, special needs and disadvantaged children that has raised over $400,000 in the two years it has been running. This year they are holding a Variety of Chefs dinner at the Hilton Hotel at 6:30pm on the 14th of May, 2011.

The Variety of Chefs dinner has four of Sydney’s most well known chefs involved who are donating their time and contributing their favourite recipes to create a 4 course degustation menu. The chefs Jared Ingersoll from Cotton Duck and Danks Street Depot, Peter Kuruvita from Flying Fish, Darren Simpson from La Scala on Jersey and Sean Connolly will take the stage to present their dishes and there will be some VIP guest judges and culinary games. And the best part is that we have two VIP tickets which includes premium seating, goodie bags, the 4 course degustation and premium beverages throughout the night!

One lucky Not Quite Nigella reader will win these 2 tickets to the Variety of Chefs dinner! For a chance to win this all you have to do is tell me which Variety chef of the four is your favourite and why?! Simply add your answer as a comment to the story. The competition ends at midnight AEST 9th April, 2011. You can enter this  competition once daily and you need to be available on Saturday the evening of 14th of May, 2011. This is open to anyone in Australia but transport to and from the venue is not included.

Tried his beef ribs on the taste festival last year, it was so good that I exchange some extra crowns and bought more!

    Plus he is hot

Oooh VIP! What a cool competition. I’d love to meet all the chefs for lots of reasons, but I think my favorite would be Sean Connolly. I really liked him in My Family Feasts on TV, his style of presentation with the families involved was so engaging and he always allowed them to be the star, not pushing himself into the middle of their special moment.
    Great Chefs, great charity.

    Darren la scala
Had my birthday at la scala and I had the pleasure of having this amazing seafood dish which was like a bouillabaisse meets stew. Sooo much seafood soooo much flavor was like heaven on a plate!

  • 9. Fiona | March 19th, 2011 at 10:03 am | #

For me it has to be Peter Kuruvita from Flying Fish….

He seems to have such a passion for seafood (which I adore). When I see photos from Flying Fish the dishes always look so elegant and I can imagine what they taste like just from looking at them ….

I’ve had Flying Fish on my list of restaurants to eat at in Sydney for almost 2 years now but never had that chance(yet)….

  • 10. EHA | March 19th, 2011 at 10:06 am | #

Well, not for me – but what a fabulous prize for one of us to win! But how did Ben O’Donoghue ‘sneak’ into the bottom pic? Guess he would have been my favourite. Loved him on TV and his book!

  • 11. Neale James | March 19th, 2011 at 10:11 am | #

My fav is Jared Ingersoll. Living in Melbourne I have never been to his restaurants but his Dank Street Depot and Shared Plates books sit dog- eared in my kitchen. His food epitomises the slow food principles of good, clean and fair and the wonderful cultural diversity of our country. And my girlfriend wants me to add that she thinks he is a bit of a spunk!

  • 12. Cate | March 19th, 2011 at 10:11 am | #

Peter Kuruvita – just love spicy seafood!!!! Please let me win – it can be your birthday present to me!!!

Gee, it’s a tough call but I love Peter Kuruvita! His modern Australian is inspiring and innovative. Flying Fish has set a benchmark for the use of our fabulous seafood and produce.
Oh, and I’m free on the 14th of May!

  • 15. Lydia Borilovic | March 19th, 2011 at 10:29 am | #

Jared Ingersoll because I’ve admired him on Ready Steady Cook. He is such a gentleman and I would love the opportunity to try his food with my mouth and not just my eyes. I live in Melbourne but if i won, I would combine the event with a trip to see my family and friends in Sydney :-)

  • 16. Kirilie | March 19th, 2011 at 10:29 am | #

Jared Ingersoll is my favourite chef of the four.

Not only for his sumptuous creations but also because of his passion for supporting his local growers and producers. This means that when you go to Danks St Depot to dine, you are guaranteed to be enjoying the freshest in-season produce possible.Yum!

  • 17. Jasmin | March 19th, 2011 at 10:33 am | #

I’d love to go to this. We went to Sean’s Kitchen for The GD’s birthday last year and I desperately wanted to sneakily arrange for a candle on his apple tart. When I couldn’t find our waiter, lo and behold my surprise that Sean walked out of the kitchen and asked me if he could help.

When the tart came out, Sean came with it, and the rest of the staff singing Happy Birthday and had elegantly piped Happy Birthday Adam, around the edge of the plate.

He then sat down with us and had a lovely chat about the famous ham room and wished us a lovely evening – before sending over some champagne and petit fours.

He was a lovely guy and I would be more than happy to meet him again.

Sounds like it will be an amazing night.

  • 18. Alisa | March 19th, 2011 at 10:41 am | #

Peter Kuruvita! For me, he’s the epitome of great Australian food – the fusion our amazing seafood and produce with the different cultural influences from his background. I also love that sustainability of the seafood industry is an issue that he cares about. And also (!!) that his restaurant is family friendly so his amazing food is accessible to all!

  • 19. Ju | March 19th, 2011 at 11:08 am | #

Jared Ingersoll – great chef and rather attractive too lets face it!
Also he really hits the mark when it comes to educating kids about food. His kids menus during “Week of Tastes” are fabulous. And we were at his family friendly “Salt” lesson at the Powerhouse, he just had a great way with kids and adults alike. Very down to earth.

  • 20. Michelle | March 19th, 2011 at 11:19 am | #

Sean Connolly – really enjoyed his tv series “My Family Feast” highlighting the diversity of cooking origins, the bringing together of family and the celebration of food

  • 26. Liv | March 19th, 2011 at 1:36 pm | #

It’s a tough choice, but I’ve gone with Jared Ingersoll – I went to college literally around the corner from Danks Street Depot, so it was a favourite hang-out place for us students. While most of the time, we just went for coffees, a couple of times we splurged & had some food…it was delicious! (I think that’s an understatement! LOL) We always felt comfortable sitting and chatting while drinking our coffees (or hot chocolate), and always felt at home! :)

My fav would have to be Peter Kuruvita from Flying Fish as:

    a) I’ve sadly not eaten at any of the other chef’s restaurants and

    b) we had such a great time at his Fiji restaurant last year just after we got engaged…it would be nice to taste some of his food again.

  • 41. Nic@diningwithastud | March 19th, 2011 at 10:10 pm | #

  • 43. Matilda | March 19th, 2011 at 10:32 pm | #

OMG Lorraine, this is the ‘Mother of all competitions!’ How I’d love to win this delicious prize, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to attend a Chef’s Dinner, I’d be in a gastronomic heaven, Sigh! I admire all altruistic chefs who give up their time for such events, showcase their talents and genuinely care for those in need.
So, do I choose Sean Connolly for his yummy food ,his down-to-earth and very approachable manner? Jared Ingersoll for his innovative dishes and his stance on sustainability ? The very likeable and clever Darren Simpson whose energy and love of food jumps out at us from the screen? Or should I pick Peter Kuruvita who has propelled native Sri Lankan dishes and his love for seafood to dizzy heights?
Oh me, oh my,oh,oh, oh…..all of them! :-)

  • 44. shaz | March 19th, 2011 at 10:34 pm | #

Oooh, what fun. I must say Peter Kuruvita is my pick. Even though I’ve yet to eat at Flying Fish I’ve heard so many good things about the food. Actually, I’d picked it as the restaurant to go to for my last birthday, but we didn’t get there in the end. So, maybe if I get the chance to win the tix, it could be a (very) belated birthday present. :)

What a fabulous night it would be. So thrilling and for such a great cause.

  • 51. Victoria | March 20th, 2011 at 1:24 pm | #

    I would say Peter Kuruvita.

My first fine dining experience was at Flying Fish and everything about the place blew me away. The quality and flavours that I experienced in the food were truly breathtaking and made me understand why it is that Chefs devote such passion and energy (and insanely hectic schedules) to their professions.

To be able to open peoples minds with the presentation and the flavour of food is a pretty spectacular thing, and Peter’s restaurant did that for me.

  • 52. Dan | March 20th, 2011 at 1:38 pm | #

Jared from the Depot, because he brought a ray of light to the culinary wasteland of Sydney International Airport.

The Danks St Depot outlet there is a haven when you need to check in 3 hrs early then kick your heels till boarding. At least you can get a good meal while passing the time.

Plus his staff are pun-worthy. I commented that Jared’s food is hearty – they said “we’d say that it has Inger-Soul!” Boom-tish.

    CLEAR favourite!

  • 53. Vanessa | March 20th, 2011 at 4:42 pm | #

Darren Simpson is my fav chef! I’ve always loved his Italian recipes he cooks on The Best…and I love his Irish accent! So sexy!

  • 54. cath | March 20th, 2011 at 5:28 pm | #

    Hi Lorraine!!
This is the best competition ever!!
I love Jared Ingersol! I love his food, I love his use of seasonal produce ( I believe we would all be a lot healthier if we ate seasonally) and I love the community feel. Go Jared!

  • 55. Jenny @ M and M | March 20th, 2011 at 5:46 pm | #

My favourite is definitely Sean Connolly – while he may have more than a deft hand at producing piercingly beautiful dishes at fine diners and the like, he’s also shown himself to have a true understanding and appreciation for peasant food (as seen on his show My Family Feast). Personally, I think a true artist, whether with food or brushstrokes, should develop an awareness for the root of their chosen field. Sean has achieved this and I’m sure it’s one of leading reasons why he’s so good at what he does and continues to refine his skills.

  • 56. Tess Uncle | March 20th, 2011 at 6:22 pm | #

Peter Kuruvita would have to be my favorite as I recently attended taste of Sydney (6 week baby in tow – go me!) and his ocean trout dish was amazing! You shouldn’t be able to produce something that good under those cooking conditions! The man is genius! The fact he is attending an event supporting such a worthy cause makes me love him more.. What a great prize – I hope I win! :)

  • 57. jess | March 20th, 2011 at 8:50 pm | #

I love Jared because of his use of fresh, organic ingredients to make simple but delicious food. Because of this, he does an amazing job on Ready Steady Cook!

  • 58. Cathy | March 20th, 2011 at 8:58 pm | #

Darren Simpson would be my favorite. His personality comes out in his food. He’s fun and cheeky and thats the way food should be prepared and taste as good as it is cooked and presented. What a great wedding anniversary present this would be! <3

  • 59. Charmian | March 20th, 2011 at 9:53 pm | #

  • 67. Patricia | March 21st, 2011 at 11:18 am | #

Wow, such a hard choice !!

I’ve been to Flying Fish with my boyfriend for our first formal meeting as valentines. We both have gastronomy background and we love sharing our time with good food and service.
He took me there for this very special occasion and it was spotless !! The food was amazing and I couldn’t say one negative word. Taste, presentation, atmosphere… Peter Kuruvita was part of this show. It was everything perfect.
By the way, we remember that occasion as something very special for us and maybe because it was so perfect I said YES to him.

  • 75. Patch | March 21st, 2011 at 8:08 pm | #

Peter Kuruvita is my pick of the best, and such a hard choice it is. His approach to sustainable seafood and interesting take on simple produce gives hobby cooks like myself hope. The precision involved in the meal preparation and plating which we saw on junior masterchef makes you truly appreciate their skills.

Oh what a night it would be to win and be in the presence of such great company and food!

  • 76. May Choo Lee | March 21st, 2011 at 10:58 pm | #

You have really outdone yourself NQN, this is an AMAZING prize! I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t heard of the Variety of Chefs dinners before but they sound amazing – beautiful food, talented people and all for a good cause… I love it!

My fave chef would have to be Peter Kuruvita… I have had the opportunity to dine at Flying Fish once before and it was a fantastic cullinary experience! Impeccable seafood, delicious food combinations and some of the most gorgeous plating I’ve ever seen! Peter is a true Aussie inspiration!

    Dear Lorraine,

What a fantastic competition you’re hosting indeed!! I’m so glad that these chefs are donating their time, efforts and talents to such a great cause. As a “poor” international student (who by God’s grace, is studying in Sydney in the first place thanks to a sponsorship) who has yet to sample any of the listed chefs’ dishes (though I’ve heard rave reviews before), it is hard to do justice by just picking a favourite. But if you really want me to narrow down to just one, it will probably be Peter Kuruvita – reasons as in the following poem…

Fusion of flavours when east meets west,
    Glorious seafood at its best,
    Tantalizing gastronomical fest,
Need I compare with the rest?

I think this dinner is a simply amazing and creative way to helping children in need. As a medical student who was previously attached to Sydney Children’s Hospital, I’ve observed the huge need for financial aid and how every single cent counts…

If I’m fortunate enough to win this contest, I’ll be bringing along my boyfriend, who is currently researching on cytomegalovirus in pregnancy (which causes congenital birth defects). So while neither of us are financially able to contribute as much as those donating to attend this dinner, we’re doing the best with the knowledge and resources we have to help children in need. My boyfriend’s thesis submission is due at the end of May and I was thinking how nice it would be to “treat” him to this dinner as an extra “motivation” for his final lap at uni! =)

Apologies for the rather long comment (I tend to rant, lol) and thanks for patiently reading to the end. All the best to everyone joining the contest and I’m sure that whoever wins, you’ll definitely be in for a great night!

    God bless you all! ^_^

Ps. Incidentally, the closing date (9th April) marks our 3-monthiversary… ;)

Jared Ingersoll! I love the way he makes it all look so good as well! This is my downfall and I so admire that ability to delight all the senses…well nearly all!!

  • 104. Grace | April 5th, 2011 at 4:55 pm | #

Definitely Peter Kuruvita, and my reasons are endless. Here’s why:

    1. I’ve been dying to try Flying Fish since I spied the review on your blog. Your picture of the dessert tasting platter absolutely blew me away. Chestnut soufflé with gingerbread ice cream, orange and honeycomb lemon curd square with caramelised marshmallow topping, vanilla mousse, blackberry, almond and elderflower sorbet … Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory in miniature form.
    2. Throughout Kuruvita’s stint as head chef at Bilsons, the restaurant received a SMH two hat rating. Definitely a sign of pure genius.
    3. As a subscriber to the salty/sweet dichotomy, I’m desperate to meet the creator of Flying Fish’s black pepper caramel.
    4. Whenever I see the name Kuruvita, I’m instantly reminded of my computer teacher from high school (of the same surname) who told us in our first class that his baby son tried to emulate his father by inserting a CD into a computer, only he had used a cookie rather than a disc. Epic fail. Mr Kuruvita used this story as a gentle reminder to his students to be careful what they put into their computers. He was one of the kindest and warmest teachers a student can have. Peter Kuruvita’s interaction with the Junior Masterchef contestants shows that he shares the same warmth and gentleness, and would be an absolute pleasure to meet.
    5. As a self-confessed tea-addict, I can only admire someone who trekked through Sri Lanka to film ‘The Chef & the Tea-Maker’.
    6. Peter Kuruvita’s first job was working the kitchens at a restaurant called Crabapple. That word itself instantly conjures up childhood memories of reading the Brambly Hedge series of children books. I remember being entranced by the intricate illustrations, the foodlover surnames (Mr and Mrs Crabapple), and the delightful food eaten by the characters in the stories – rosepetal butter, dandelion cake, honeycomb tea and primrose pudding.
    7. Kuruvita has said that he could ‘write 10 volumes of recipes just on vegetables’. Now that’s my kind of guy!!
    8. My exposure to Sri Lankan cuisine has so far been limited to egg hoppers (a good start) but I’m desperate to try more.
    9. His heritage (like my own) is mixed, and its reflection in his food demonstrates the magic that can happen when two worlds collide.
    10. His story captures the essence of what it means to be Australian. He had a warm, colourful childhood in Sri Lanka, surrounded by spices and pandan leaves, infused with the heady scent of cinnamon and cardamom, marked by the pleasure and pain of chillies. Political violence forced his family to relocate to Australia where he was ‘the only dark kid in school’ and he found himself fighting ignorance and racism. To have that history, and yet stand where he does today, in the midst of our multicultural melting pot, says as much about his strength as it does about the beauty of modern Australian culture. Of the new life that Australia gave him, Kuruvita said “I’m Asian. Australia allows you to be that.” His story speaks to me, and I’m sure to millions of other Australians as well.

Peter Kurivata, who can go past his tuna dish with that amazing pork crackling!

  • 106. Anna | April 9th, 2011 at 12:53 pm | #

Jared Ingersoll is one of Australia’s brightest culinary stars.I think he is fantastic. He cooks from his heart and is so genuine. He’s just a breath of fresh air!

  • 107. Louise Bradley | April 9th, 2011 at 2:55 pm | #

Almost impossible to decide, but my choice is Peter Kurivata. Apart from enjoying his divine food, and appreciating his methods, values and generosity of spirit, as seen through his television appearances to date, it would be really fascinating to hear more about his recent adventures in Sri Lanka and how these are influencing his retaurants here, in Fidji, and possibly in Sri Lanka soon. A truly international Chef who believes food can heal differences between people. Amen to that!

  • 108. Keren | April 9th, 2011 at 8:14 pm | #

Darren Simpson, his personality reflects in his cooking. I love the thought of tasting and savoring some delicious food cooked by him.

  • 109. Alex | April 9th, 2011 at 10:16 pm | #

Oh oh oh just made it in time!

My favourite is Jared Ingersoll because he is great on Ready Steady Cook, which I only get to watch on holidays or when I’m home sick. This means I associate him with sitting on my couch drinking tea, which is always a good thing!

I also love his food philosophy. Don’t get me wrong, I love fried chicken and chocolate as much as the next girl and would describe myself as an equal opportunity eater, but I love his passion for sustainability and using beautiful fresh food.

I know you understand the difficulties in finding a place that caters to vegetarians and non vegetarians alike, which is why I love his restaurant too! My boyfriend is veggie and so often we have to go to a specifically vego restaurant or he gets to eat another risotto or salad (seriously people, there are more than 2 vegetarian dishes!) but I’ve read the menu and he has great and interesting options, so I can enjoy my meat and not feel sorry for my dining partner!

  • 110. Alex | April 9th, 2011 at 10:17 pm | #

Oops, forgot to mention, if I did win dear boyfriend would be replaced as a dining partner with my friend who is like me and will eat ANYTHING. Shhh, don’t tell him though ;)

  • 111. Belinda Bonello | April 9th, 2011 at 11:57 pm | #

Peter Kuruvita because he always makes amazing seafood

  • 112. Melly | April 10th, 2011 at 5:40 pm | #

For me it’s definitely Sean Connolly! I loved his restaurant Sean’s Kitchen. Great mod-Aus and Spanish tapas with fantastic original cocktails and an oyster bar! what more could you want (so sad it’s closed)?

His take on food is inspiring and I really love his philosophy which is surmised on his website: “when we share great food served lovingly in a fabulous environment we build relationships, we discover, invent, reinvent and delight”.

How fabulous! I’d simply love a chance to watch him and the other incredible chefs make me dinner!

  • 113. Buggles | April 11th, 2011 at 12:18 pm | #

Probably Jared Ingersoll… love his approach to sustainable food and makes awesome bacon hash also!! (darren Simpson gets special mention also for his Vitello Tonnato and Chocolate Nemesis!)
