Sushi Box is a takeaway sushi shop that sells sushi push pops with coatings like blue takis or hot cheetos or sushi with za'atar and drizzled in olive oil. Find out what it is like and which combination of sushi pop works best!
It's a beautiful, sunny Saturday when Mr NQN and I arrive at Sushi Box in Yagoona with Teddy and Milo in tow. By the time we drive there it is 2pm it's just after lunch so the display is a little depleted. Nevertheless there are some ready-made boxes and rolls that actually look really good at decent prices but we are here for two things. The first item is the sushi push pop. Like the candy version, the sushi comes in a tube and you push up the base to reveal the sushi.
Sushi Push Pops don't have to be ordered ahead of time. You can just walk in and order them and they're $16 each and around the size of two sushi rolls. A sign displaying them explains that basically you choose the filling from a choice of 5 including raw salmon, tuna mayonnaise, prawn tempura, crab or chicken schnitzel and then you choose the coating on the outside. The coatings can be anything from traditional like sesame seeds or flying fish roe/masago or more creative like crushed Blue Taki's or crushed hot Cheetos.
I'm here for anything that I can't get anywhere else so we order three sushi pops with combinations that they recommend. We have the tuna salad with avocado with blue takis, the salmon and avocado with masago and the chicken schnitzel with avocado rolled in hot Cheetos. Service is friendly and helpful.
I also order something that I've never seen before which is an off menu item called a za'atar fusion sushi roll. This is an inside out roll with chicken schnitzel, cucumber and cream cheese on the inside sprinkled on top and olive oil drizzled on top (we opt for no cream cheese).
We take a seat outside and wait and in less than 10 minutes our food is ready. The idea behind the sushi push pop is that you take the soy sauce which sits in a slender tube on the side and then remove the lids and then add soy sauce as needed. They're all pre-sliced and admittedly for a first timer it is slightly awkward to eat but it's a very fun. I start with the tuna and avocado rolled in the blue Takis. The citrusy lime brightness of the lime in the really goes well with the tuna and I love the extra crunch. I do end up with lots of crumbs on me though so don't wear your best outfit!
The second one I try is the chicken schnitzel (unfortunately they sold out of prawn tempura as I would have ordered that) but the schnitzel goes so well with the hot Cheetos. And then a part of me is wondering why this is the first time I've ever tried sushi with these spicy crumbs before and whether I'd want extra crumbs for a spicier flavour. I think about all the flavours I can make at home.
Traditionalist Mr NQN loves the salmon and avocado with flying fish roe. I like it, but I really do find the other ones a little bit more appealing because of the crunchiness. I also think I would've preferred it with a bit more flying fish roe but I'm just being greedy at this stage.
Then lastly we try the za'atar sushi roll. It's said to be 6 pieces but it's more like 8 pieces. Inside is chicken schnitzel and cucumber (we opted for no cream cheese) and it is liberally topped with aromatic and crunchy za'atar and olive oil. This is nice although it takes a beat or two to get used to the fusion aspect of it. I am glad that I tried it although I don't know if I would order it again. And a part of me wants to come back just to try their regular sushi boxes too if I were in the area!
So tell me Dear Reader, have you ever seen or tried sushi pops before? Which one would you like?
