Looking for Halloween recipes with a little less candy and a little more fruit and veg? These five ideas bring plenty of spooky fun to the table! There's a hearty skull soup, colourful fruit kebabs, baked apple zombie heads, a sushi brain and the cutest little strawberry pumpkin patch. Because even little ghouls need something to eat before trick or treating!
1 - Halloween Skull & Pumpkin Soup
Who knew mushrooms could look so much like tiny skulls? A few clever cuts turn an ordinary vegetable and lentil soup into a bowl of Halloween fun, complete with little carrot pumpkins! Leave out the chilli for children who prefer things mild and serve the skulls facing up. Dinner is looking back at you!
2 - Candy Corn Fruit Kebabs
These candy corn inspired kebabs have a little secret: there's no candy involved! Banana, rockmelon and pineapple give you those white, orange and yellow colours using fresh fruit. They're an easy addition to the Halloween table when you fancy something fresh and juicy between all those sweet treats!
3 - Baked Apple Zombie Heads
These little zombie heads may look frightful but inside they're all cosy baked apple goodness! Filled with prunes, coconut, brown sugar and cinnamon, they're a delicious fruit dessert with plenty of personality. Adults can do the carving while the kids decide whether their zombies should look surprised, grumpy or absolutely horrified!
4 - Sushi Brain
Got a little sushi lover in the family? This ghoulish brain hides an avocado with chive cream cheese inside a layer of sushi rice, with folded smoked salmon making those wonderfully creepy brain wrinkles! It's a savoury centrepiece for the Halloween table and you shape it by hand, so there's no special mould required.
5 - Pumpkin Patch Strawberries
How adorable is this little pumpkin patch? Strawberries get dressed up in orange chocolate and sit in Oreo crumb "dirt" with mint leaves for their stems. These are definitely on the treat side of the list but there's fresh fruit hiding underneath! Let the kids help arrange the patch once the chocolate has set.
So tell me Dear Reader, which of these would your little ghouls choose first? Do you like to serve some savoury food and fruit alongside the Halloween sweets?
