Sydney's Sandwich Obsession: S'wich in Surry Hills

S'Wich, Surry Hills

Sydney's love affair with sandwiches shows no signs of slowing down and now Bondi favourite S'wich has landed in Surry Hills. Tucked into the new Wunderlich Lane precinct, this second store comes with some exclusive creations you won't find at the original. There's a crunchy, chilli-spiked S'wich Schnit to the wagyu-packed Le Boof and even a salad collab with a local Pilates studio. So is it worth making a detour for?

In 2019 childhood friends Jordan Abram and Jay Fink started a simple sandwich pop up in Bellevue Hill. This turned into such a success that they opened up a permanent store in Bondi in 2022. Then in June 2025 they opened up a second branch in Surry Hills. To entice people even further, there are some sandwiches only available at the new Surry Hills branch. When we arrive at the Wunderlich precinct we see that S'wich is located right next to Regina Pizzeria on the ground level of the complex.

There is indoor and outdoor seating and in shades of tan brown giving it a slight retro feel albeit polished. Service is lovely and friendly and while all the indoor tables are taken, they turn over quickly so by the time we have finished ordering a table is free.

There are around 10 pre-designed sandwiches, 4 melts, 7 salads and 1 soup on offer and you can also build your own sandwiches with all of the fillings available. One interesting part of the menu are the "crunches" which are dukkah, umami seeds, peanut chilli crack, honey walnut and garlic bread crumb that are designed to give the sandwiches texture. You can choose the breads that you want for your sandwiches from Sonoma white/ brown/sourdough and AP Bakery's focaccia, fenugreek sesame or Wholegreen Bakery's gluten free loaf. Everything but the white and brown are around $2-$3 extra.

Drinks wise it is mostly a bottled or tins affair with water, low cal soda or a freshly squeezed OJ. The only coffee you'll find is tins of Suntory Boss coffee which is either a missed opportunity or a strategic decision as we hear people asking about coffee a lot.

French Fries $9.99 and Green Goddess Dressing $2.50

"Can I be weird and ask that my fries come out hot? Like really hot?" I ask them and the lovely girl behind the counter assures me that they come out as soon as they are done. They arrive piping hot and liberally coated in chicken salt. They're so good we can't stop eating them especially when dunked into the Green Goddess dressing on the side (I mean why go with mayo or ketchup when you can Green Goddess it?).

S'wich Schnit $20.50

Within less than 10 minutes, our sandwiches are hitting the table. The first one I bite into is the S'wich Schnit with chicken schnitzel, white cabbage, pickled red onion, mayo, sticky sweet chilli, peanut chilli crack and shallots.

The sweet chilli sauce really ties this together and tastes like a cut above a typical sweet chilli and the other factor that makes this so moreish is the peanut chilli crack that gives each bite such a delicious, flavoursome crunch. I can see why this is so popular although neither of us really liked the brown bread it was served on and I think a white goes better with schnitzel.

Le Boof $24.90 + $2 extra for focaccia

I wanted to try the focaccia for one of the sandwiches so we choose to have it on the Le Boof, a Surry Hills special with wagyu roast beef, horseradish mayo, baby cos, fresh tomato slices and pickled cucumber. While the flavour profile of the S'wich Schnit was sweet, this is more umami but no less delicious. The wagyu roast beef is sliced super thinly which I love and we both enjoy the salad and focaccia with just the right balance of flavours and sauce. If you like burgers, then I think you’ll like these (in that vein, a cheese would be great on this too).

Core Crunch $24.90

We also try the salad just for something fresh. The most popular salad is the Core Crunch a collab with the local Pilates studio and is also a Surry Hills special. The salad looks fantastic with shreds of Bannockburn free range chicken with a creamy dill mayo dressing, baby cos, house leaves with house dressing, half an avocado, chives, fresh cucumber, tomato and generous amount of honey walnuts down the centre of the salad. It doesn't quite reach the heights of the sandwiches and the dill in the chicken is very strong (and you're talking to a dill lover here). We both sort of pick at it but go back to the sandwiches.

Like many who split a sandwich or have one, they're big so many avail themselves of a box to take them home in and we are no exception.

So tell me Dear Reader, do you like sticking with classics, or do you always try the location-exclusive specials? What is your ultimate sandwich filling combo?

This meal was independently paid for.
