New England NSW reminded me that some trips ask you to earn them a little. The long road north-west of Sydney became part of the pleasure, stretching out into big skies, quiet paddocks, country hospitality and the kind of meals and stays that feel better because you arrived properly, with snacks eaten, podcasts exhausted and the city finally shaken out of your shoulders.
