Smash Hit! Humble Buns Food Truck in Bexley

Humble Buns, Bexley

Humble Buns is a food truck located on Forest Road in Bexley. The word is that they make some of the best smash burgers in Sydney. Come along as we try their smash burgers and loaded fries!

Mr NQN is used to me planning meals based on cravings and it has been many months since I last had a burger. I just don't get a craving for them but when craving hits, then it hits hard (I also get a craving for a can of Coke once a year as well). I also love smash burgers more than regular ones because of the caramelisation thanks to the Maillard reaction when the meat is smashed flat on the grill. This makes them thinner, quicker to cook with a crispy edge and a juicy centre and increases the browning and flavour of the beef.

The Humble Buns food truck is run by business partners Yousseff and Ahmed. Yousseff explains, "It all started when me and my partner started smashing burgers at home on a Bunnings grill and our families absolutely loved them so we had an idea to open a smashed burger joint back in 2019 but COVID came along and put that idea on the shelf. We then decided to just have a crack and give it a go so in 2024 Humble Buns was born." As for the name they just "thought a bit of humbleness could make the world a better place". They use halal grass feed angus beef in their burgers that is simply seasoned with salt and is delivered to them fresh every day, never frozen.

Humble Buns has two locations: one in Carlton which we saw when we went to Papi's Birria and another one on Forest Road in Bexley, which is a bit more established. We arrive on a Sunday night at 6pm which is peak hour at the food truck. The food truck is located just outside a mechanic on Forest Road and there are four picnic tables and chairs set up.

Service is friendly and when I ask them to recommend three of their best burgers they recommend ones that are also very different from each other. I also order a loaded fries and my annual Coke. Things take time here and it is probably because we've hit the dinner rush with lots of takeout drivers and families so it takes about 35 to 40 minutes to receive our food.

Slaw Burger $16

The first burger I try is called the Slaw Burger and as a name suggests it has coleslaw on it along with a smashed patty, American cheese and dill pickles on a potato bun. This is nice but it is a little cold. I’m not sure if the coleslaw made it cold but I think burgers really are best served piping hot because otherwise the fat congeals.

Humble Halo $18

The second burger I try ends up being my favourite. The Humble Halo has 2 premium smashed patties, Swiss cheese, fresh jalapeño slices, grilled onions and humble sauce on a soft potato bun. It’s also piping hot and delicious with all that melted cheese, crispy edged smashed patty and fresh jalapeño slices that balance this rich burger so beautifully. The only negative? I've promised to share it with Mr. NQN because as you know when you get married, you split everything halfway down. He loves it too and there’s no way he’s giving this back to me.

Humble Classic $18

The third burger that we try is the classic with smashed patty, American cheese, dill pickles, diced onion, oak leaf lettuce, tomato and humble sauce on a soft potato bun. It is rich and delicious similar to the second one with a gooey melted cheese, salad and humble sauce which is like a mayonnaise ketchup burger sauce that they make themselves every week. If you like classic flavours go for this otherwise if you like things spicy I definitely recommend the Humble Halo. I also do think it's worth getting double patties because we did enjoy the two burgers with double patties a lot more.

Loaded Fries $12

The French fries themselves are a little cold too, but the topping is delicious. Bear in mind I like my phrase blisteringly hot like they just came out of the fryer otherwise I just don’t enjoy them as much however I did really like the sauce and the abundance of finally chopped white onion and chopped up smashed burger on top.

So tell me Dear Reader, how often do you crave a burger? And what do you think of smash burgers?

This meal was independently paid for.
