Slippery's in Peakhurst is a food truck that specialises in two things: pizza and subs. But these subs are not your regular subs; they are made with pizza dough so that they're light fluffy and a little bit crispy. Learn more about what is at Slippery's!
It's getting dark by the time we reach Slippery's a food truck located in a car park on Stanley Street in Peakhurst. We are lured here by the idea of a sub made with pizza dough. As pizza lovers we love to try anything to do with pizza with visions to recreate it at home.
Mr. NQN takes a seat with Teddy and Milo outside in the undercover seating area while I go to order. Service is friendly and they recommend the two best sellers: the pepperoni pizza and the brisket sub. For $5 extra, I upgraded with a side of the small chips (which are really quite large) and Australian Go cola. I take the buzzer to the table and wait as everything is prepared fresh. The prices are good. A sub starts at $18 and a pizza starts at $20 and these are made in the wood fired oven in the truck.
The 13 inch pizza comes with the option of hot honey which I definitely recommend. There's house smoked pepperoni, tomato and mozzarella. The crust is puffy and thin in the centre but still cooked through so it's not wet in the centre. The hot honey gives the salty pepperoni a sweet counterpoint and it's a good, solid pizza. The halal beef pepperoni is quite a good dupe for the pork version too (the whole menu is halal).
We wash this down with the Go Cola which tastes just like Coke (I'm not a Coke connoisseur so it's close enough for me).
The beef brisket sub is smoky with a good amount of very smokey soft beef brisket, coleslaw, American cheese, pickles and bbq aioli on a freshly baked pizza dough base. The beef is brined for 5 days then rubbed in their special seasoning mix and then smoked over mesquite for 8 hours. The pizza base wrap is just clever with the signature chewy puffy blistered pizza base giving extra texture to the lusciously soft and substantial sub filling. Stuff a couple of chips in there and you won't regret it.
I'm more intrigued with the sub combinations so I go back to order another sub. There's also a fried chicken or a Philly cheesesteak. As we've had a lot of beef already we opt for the chicken sub with Southern Fried Chicken tenderloins, slaw, American cheese, house made pickles and aioli on the pizza dough. And I'm not one of those people that has to be different I swear but that chicken sub ends up being my favourite with lots of freshly cooked tender and crispy chicken. Even though I'm full I take a few bites and then pack this up for the next day's lunch, happy knowing that I've got something good to eat.
That brings me to the chips. These are double fried chips liberally seasoned with chicken salt and the double frying makes them super crispy. They are a little on the salty side for me and I'm one that loves salt so my only option is to dip in the hot honey!
Oh and the name Slippery's? That was owner Mohammed Zaidan's nickname as a UIF boxing champion. Since then he has been in the hospitality industry for 15 years.
So tell me Dear Reader, have you ever tried a sub made with pizza dough instead of bread? Which would you choose first, a pizza or a sub?
This meal was independently paid for.
