Oman stayed with me as the quiet surprise of the Middle East. I arrived knowing embarrassingly little and left remembering a country that revealed itself gently: through hospitality, heat, markets, mountains, rain, silence and the kind of small kindnesses that make you realise you have been paying attention without meaning to.

When I first told people that I was going to Oman, there were a few different responses. Some mistook it for the Aman resorts, some mistook it for Amman and a few people actually knew where it was, next to Dubai, Yemen and Saudi Arabia on the edge of the Arabian sea and the Gulf of Oman.
