About These Halloween Strawberries Witch Broomsticks
These adorable chocolate covered strawberries are the perfect easy Halloween snack! Strawberries are coated in chocolate with a "broomstick" and are delicious and easy!
This comes together in no time! Dipping strawberries in chocolate is easy and all you need to do is pipe a little chocolate over the dipped strawberry to make broom bristles. These are so effective.
Ingredients For Halloween Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Strawberries - Choose strawberries that are medium sized and that are similarly shaped. I did look through around a dozen boxes of strawberries before I found a suitable box! Haha! You also want ripe and sweet strawberries too so choose bright red strawberries.
Chocolate - Dark or bittersweet chocolate is the best chocolate for dipping strawberries as it has the highest melting point and the most cocoa butter which means that it sets and you get a nice crisp bite and snap.
Coconut oil - Mixing a little coconut oil with the chocolate makes the chocolate a bit more liquid and easy to dip.
Caramilk chocolate - This is for the ferrule aka part that attaches the stick to the broom.
Pretzels or chocolate sticks - Now this is an interesting one because pretzels eventually get soggy in the strawberry but chocolate sticks can snap if you don't keep these in the fridge or you have very large strawberries. I used chocolate sticks because I couldn't find straight pretzels and kept these in the fridge until serving!
Halloween Strawberry Witch Broomsticks Recipe
An Original Recipe by Lorraine Elliott
Recipe Overview
Preparation time: 20 minutes plus 20 minutes chilling time
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Serves: 12
Ingredients Needed
12 medium sized strawberries
300g/10.6oz dark or bittersweet chocolate
1 teaspoon coconut oil
10g/0.3oz Caramilk chocolate
12 straight pretzels (or chocolate sticks)
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1 PREP- Slice off the stalk ends of the strawberries (12 medium sized strawberries) so that they sit completely flat. Have a tray lined with parchment ready. Melt the chocolate (300g/10.6oz) in the microwave on 70% power in 30 seconds increments. Stir in the coconut oil (1 teaspoon) and mix well.
Step 2 DIP- Take one fork and place it in the cut side of the strawberry and dip it in the chocolate coating it well. Using another fork carefully lift it off the fork and place it on the parchment. Insert a skewer into the top as a guide for the pretzel or chocolate stick and then insert the pretzel or chocolate stick (1 per strawberry). Repeat with remaining strawberries and allow to set in the fridge.
Step 3 PIPING- Fill a small piping bag or ziplock bag with 2 teaspoons of melted chocolate. Snip off a tiny end and then pipe broomstick bristles vertically down the side of the strawberry. Pipe a little chocolate around the ferrule where the stick meets the strawberry to secure it. Refrigerate until set.
Step 4 FERRULE- Melt the Caramilk chocolate (10g/0.3oz) on 50% power (lower!) in 20 second increments. Place in another piping bag or ziplock bag and pipe the ferrule. Set and store in the fridge. Chocolate covered strawberries last for 1-2 days in the fridge. Chocolate strawberries usually last longer but these have been cut so this shortens their life.
Personal Note
Mr NQN said that these were his favourite Halloween item I had ever made out of every single thing over the last 18 years! I like it when he gets into the spirit of Halloween and enjoys the food and he has been very helpful in planning my Halloween parties over the years.
He was very helpful recently this past weekend. We were in the Southern Highlands at a food festival and we had an agreement that he would be driving home because I loathe driving at night on motorways. But I was seeing how much he was enjoying the wine tastings so I said that I could drive because it would still be light by the time we got home as we would be leaving at 4pm and it would still be light. But then a last minute invitation came through for us to stay a bit longer for a master class and it was something we couldn't resist.
"Can you drive?" I asked him panicking. "Sure!" he said confidently. But as we pulled out as the sun had pretty much disappeared we decided to check just in case. It's hard to know exactly what you've been drinking when it's about wine tasting and being poured different sized glasses so we decided that I would drive.
It started off ok but once we got onto the proper motorway I became very nervous. "I can help steer," said Mr NQN and he kept his hand on the wheel the entire drive home. It was more a back up as I was driving and steering but it made me feel better knowing that he was there. The 1 hour on the motorway was one of the longest hours and I spent the entire time wide eyed and gritting my teeth. But all I could think was about getting home to my babies Teddy and Milo and that I didn't want to miss Halloween!
So tell me Dear Reader, what is your least liked driving condition? Do you like gruesome or cute Halloween treats?
