Down a side street of St Peters sits a sandwich store called "Sandwhich". This hidden away sandwich shop has become very popular ever since it opened and features just five sandwiches for lunch. Find out which ones are a must order.
Sophia and I drive past Sandwhich on Applebee Street in St Peters and our eyes widen as we both see the queue at the same time. But undeterred (I mean, we're already there) we decide that we can't give up. We find a park about seven minutes walk away and by the time we get to the cafe, the line has grown even longer.
Sandwhich is by Nikki Alexandra (ex Neptune's Grotto) and Charles Winardi (ex Hubert) a duo of in laws; Nikki is married to Charles's brother. It is their first business striking out on their own and they are St Peters locals.
The cafe is heaving with people and we dislike the idea of standing in a queue for one hour so Sophia suggests that we just do some shopping at Marrickville Metro and then return at 2 o'clock. This proves to be a fruitful decision. At 2 o'clock we arrive back and the queues have died down. The staff are super friendly and they do warn us that our sandwiches will still take an hour, but this time we can sit at a table with our drinks and snacks. Two of the sandwiches are sold out (the wagyu and the hot honey mortadella focaccia).
I ordered a sosro jasmine tea matcha cloud while Sophia orders the apple tea served hot in a teapot. Sosro Tehbotol is an Indonesian jasmine tea that they use as the base and they top with a matcha cream cloud.
The banana bread is made in house and is ribboned with black sesame. It's not particularly strong in banana or black sesame but it is made moist by the brown butter and given crunch from the salt flakes on top.
It's only half an hour or so before our food starts arriving. We start with the fries that are sprinkled with furikake and nori salt. These are excellent dipped into the onsen egg with chilli sambal that ends up being a delicious spicy creamy dipping sauce once you break the creamy yolk.
The first sandwich I try is the confit katsu fried field mushroom with peppercorn, American sauce, cheese and pickles on potato bun. The mushroom is juicy and crunchy and it's not a bad option for vegetarians.
The fish with tartare sauce is made with tempura ling fish, yoghurt dill sauce, capers, cheese and pickles on a soft potato bun. That's a good sandwich and the tempura is crunchy while the fillet is moist. It could do with a touch more salt but the sauces and flavourings are fantastic.
However, we both agree that the sandwich that we would go back for is the crispy chicken nanban. I don't know why nanban isn't more popular here because we all love fried chicken.
Japanese nanban is soy glazed fried chicken topped with an egg tartar sauce. There is also American cheese, pickles on a milk bun and the whole thing is so well balanced that I would recommend not sharing this and instead, getting one of your own!
So tell me Dear Reader, are you willing to wait an hour for a really good sandwich? Or would you come back on a different day or time?
This meal was independently paid for.
