Baked in Berrima is a Southern Highlands gem. With tasty sandwiches on shokupan bread to sweet and savoury pastries and cakes it's a must stop for any road trip. Find out what to order there. You'll want to add this lovely bakery to your list!
Baked in Berrima is a bakery located in the pretty, historical town of Berrima in the Southern Highlands. It's a perfect stop for a drive between Canberra and Sydney and Laura and I made a beeline for it during our drive. It is located opposite the old goal just around the corner from the main street.
Laura found Baked in Berrima on Tiktok and as soon as we walk in we are hit with a colourful display of sweet and savoury baked goods from pizzas, stuffed breads, cakes and pastries like sfogliatelle, lemon and coconut slice and cinnamon buns with black and white photos of Sophia Loren looking from above.
It's hard to know what to order but we luck upon a staff member that is a) helpful and b) an enabler (I mean that in the best possible way). She recommends the most popular items and then offers to heat them up for us so that we can eat them warm. Apparently the coffee is also excellent but we didn't try it this time.
If this were in Sydney we would have paid easily over $100 for all of this food and you just know the muffaletta would be a thin slice. Here the fillings are baked into the bread dough so it is super moist and delicious. There's everything from grilled eggplant, tomatoes, capsicum, zucchini as well as salami and cheese. I definitely recommend eating this warm so that the cheese melts.
All of the food is from the land of the giants and the savoury tomato tart is a enormous square of crisp puff pastry topped generously with juicy tomatoes, caramelised onions and crumbled feta cheese. All it needs is a bit of salt or anchovy to balance the sweetness of the tomatoes.
We both absolutely devoured the ham, cheese and artichoke toasted sandwich on shokupan bread. The soft, slightly sweet milk bread takes the humble sandwich to another level and it gives it a sweetness that makes it moreish.
Another favourite is the rustico slice which is a bread dough encased with fillings. There are a few types available from beef ragu to spinach and ricotta. This is divine and the perfect blend of spinach and ricotta.
I have an absolute weakness for carrot cake and this slab, and there's no other word for it because it's enormous, is good. I love a bit more spice in my carrot cake and it could be a bit softer but it is tasty (I'm very particular about carrot cakes).
This is Laura's first time trying Lumberjack Cake made with an filling of apple and caramel with a caramelised coconut topping. It's also good in the same wholesome and tasty vein as carrot cake but really out of the savouries vs sweet, we really loved the savouries. And we pack these up to take with us for when we get peckish during the drive!
So tell me Dear Reader, do you always plan your pitstops on a road trip or do you leave it to chance? Would your snack be a cake or a savoury item?
This meal was independently paid for.
