Matcha Cafe Chubby Cubby, Haymarket

Chubby Cubby, Haymarket

Chubby Cubby is a cute little cafe that sells a range of high quality matcha drinks, coffee and hojicha. Along with drinks there are also open sandwiches on Japanese Shokupan bread. Find out what is a must order here at Chubby Cubby Cafe.

It's a Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock when Laura and I arrive at Chubby Cubby Cafe. This matcha cafe is located in Haymarket on George Street.

Laura has been here before and I've had a drink takeaway as my hairdresser is close by. Neither of us has eaten in here however but there is a range of croissants and shokupan Japanese toasts that are on offer, as well as a range of cakes and pies.

There are quite a lot of drinks to choose from, so you need to take your time to go through the several different menus. There's hot drinks, hot coffees, cold drinks, and cold coffees. You can watch all them whisking the matcha to order and they use a good quality matcha here as well.

Coconut Hojicha Foam $9, Matcha Biscoff $10.50

Ordering is done at the counter. My drink choice is the hojicha coconut water as well as a more indulgent Biscoff matcha. The coconut hojicha has hojicha cream on top of a layer of coconut water. I like the light level of sweetness from the coconut water that mixes well with the creamy, nutty hojicha foam. The Matcha Biscoff has the signature cream, Biscoff spread on a matcha latte with a Biscoff cookie on top. It's not as sweet as it sounds and I like that the drinks have a subtle sweetness to them which is tempered by the matcha or coffee.

Prawn Yuzu Marie Rose $25

The prawn avocado has tobiko and mayo with a poached egg. The filling is delicious, and the egg is perfectly cooked so that it's very runny and dresses the toast. The toast is a bit too big for the amount of filling, so the top third of the toast is quite dry and the toast is unbuttered.

Miso Mushroom Toast $20

Similarly, the miso mushroom toast is delicious and the miso mushrooms are absolutely moreish, but there simply is not enough of them for the toast. The toast just needs to be buttered otherwise.

Egg Croissant Hollandy $17

The bacon, egg, and croissant with plenty of hollandaise is an example of really good ratios. It has the perfect amount of sauce to the croissant, to the generous amount of bacon. And for $17, that is a great price for breakfast. Out of the three options, it really delivers more than the shokupan toasts.

Matcha Bannoffee $14.50

I'm slightly obsessed by the Banoffee Pie at June's Khaoyai in Ratchasima and here they do their own version (I did my own Bannoffee Pie as I loved it so much). There's matcha custard, caramel sauce, bananas and a thick layer of whipped cream and matcha dust on top of a biscuit crust. It's absolutely delicious, although I think I'd probably even prefer just classic banoffee instead of a matcha banoffee. Still, not a crumb goes back.

So tell me Dear Reader, what is your coffee or tea drink that you always order?

This meal was independently paid for.
