Angus Marrickville

I had set aside a whole weekend of doing nothing. Saturday, we stayed in leaving just to walk the dogs but on Sunday I was stir crazy. "Can we go to Angus?" I asked Mr NQN. We combine our visit to Angus with a visit to Sydney Park for the dogs.

We arrive at around 12 o'clock and it looks like all of the indoor and outdoor tables are taken. But they have a system here when you put your name down and the friendly staff are very good at estimating your waiting time which for us is just a minute or two as we need a table outside for the dogs. Milo has an altercation with a beagle and then everybody settles down. Almost everyone sitting outside has a dog.

Rhubarb iced Matcha, Montblanc $8.50 each

We start with coffee – a Mont Blanc for Mr NQN which is cold brew with brown sugar syrup and cream. For me it's a rhubarb matcha which is a perfectly sweet and delicious alternative to a strawberry matcha latte. The Mont Blanc is less sweet and I think we could probably use a bit more brown sugar syrup with this but I love the rhubarb matcha latte.

The Reuben $22.90

The menu is made up mostly of focaccia sandwiches as well as a salad, breakfast rolls, avocado toast and banana bread. The Reuben focaccia sandwich is made with house made brisket pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, cucumber pickles, house relish and aioli but it looks different from a typical Reuben because of the relish and is more Reuben inspired. The mustardy relish really dominates the flavours so I would suggest getting it separately if you really want a Reuben flavour because the rest of it is actually very well done but the relish is a tad strong.

Crumbed Fish Sandwich $24.90

The crumbed fish sandwich has a golden crumbed fish patty. The fish is quite fish forward in flavour and it's paired with melted American cheese, pickled cucumber and a generous amount of tartare sauce. I think a milder flavoured white fish works a bit better with fish sandwiches but that's just me. The focaccia bread keeps everything juicy and moist and Mr NQN is a big fan of these sandwiches because he dislikes dry sandwiches.

Poached Turmeric Chicken Sandwich $18.90

Yes we ordered a third sandwich because I love poached chicken sandwiches. The poached chicken is soft and shredded and paired with crispy onions, herbs, rocket and turmeric mayonnaise and has a lovely light lemon flavour. This is my favourite sandwich out of the three.

Pink Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie $6

They bake their focaccia fresh so you can buy a small round to take with you along with orange cinnamon buns or their best selling chocolate croissant made with a local chocolate from Marrickville. But I have a hankering for a cookie and I order one of the pink salt chocolate chip cookies and a miso brown butter sesame cookie.

Brown Butter, Miso, Sesame Cookie $5

The miso brown butter is nice although I'd love a bit more brown butter flavour but the chocolate chip is decadent and richly chocolatey with a sprinkle of salt on top to balance each bite.

So tell me Dear Reader, which sandwich would be your pick? And do you prefer classic cookies like chocolate chip or ones like miso, brown butter and sesame?

This meal was independently paid for.
