Ultimate Travelling and Food Guide to Portugal
Portugal started for me as a road trip from the Algarve to Porto, with enough airport chaos, mountain roads and excellent things to eat to win me over even when I was tired and cranky. Somewhere between piri piri chicken in Guia, seafood on the coast, warm Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon, Sintra's fairytale pastries, Porto's mighty Francesinha and Fado at night, I found a country best explored one meal, one town and one detour at a time.
Many say that the town of Guia on the Algarve coast has the best Piri Piri chicken in Portugal. Certainly the sheer number of piri piri restaurants or churrasquerias suggest that there is a meeting of the minds where they share an enthusiasm for one of Portugal's most popular food exports. We just couldn't resist an afternoon sampling what Guia had to offer.
