Portugal started for me as a road trip from the Algarve to Porto, with enough airport chaos, mountain roads and excellent things to eat to win me over even when I was tired and cranky. Somewhere between piri piri chicken in Guia, seafood on the coast, warm Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon, Sintra's fairytale pastries, Porto's mighty Francesinha and Fado at night, I found a country best explored one meal, one town and one detour at a time.
